Getting Wisdom Teeth Pulled...Help!

I'm scheduled to get the surgery tomorrow at 9AM EST. They're removing 3 wisdom teeth, all of which are under the gums. They're putting me on "IV sedation" during the surgery.

Basically, I need info on anything you can think of regarding the surgery that you can base on experience. Whether it be prior, during, or afterwards. Tips and advice welcome. Thanks!

Wow! You have just taken me back about 18 years, when I was in the military. Got all four of my wisdom teeth pulled and two of them,if memory serves me correctly, were impacted.

Definitely do what your dentist tells you to do. You don't want what's called a "dry socket" which I've heard hurts like a mother f'er.

I ate soup for about two days, was off from work for three days. just take it easy. I remember lifting about five days later, I think, and I recall feeling the blood vessels in that area 'pumping', but it didn't really hurt. Just kind of noided me out. You'll be fine my friend.

I had mine done and the surgery wasn't that bad--I remember being awakened and not even realizing they had done the procedure.

Be sure to follow instructions for aftercare. The creepiest thing about it was having to use a curved plastic syringe to irrigate the open sockets--eww! But it was painless. I did have a mouth of gauze for a day or so, but overall it wasn't terrible.

A vasectomry scares me more, and that's next!

Well, I think it greatly depends on the level (if any) of impaction..Mine were pretty brutally deep rooted so I was put under general aneasthisia, and I was pretty f!cked up when I awoke..First I told the nurse I had to piss and caused a scene when she wouldn't let me stand on my own. Then, when she finally gave in I almost pee'd on myself and fell over...Then as I was escorted back to a table to rest, take the gause out, and rinse my mouth, I started laughing at the guy next to me whose face was so puffed it looked like Quasimoto and spit bloody water all over the nurse. Needless to say I thought it was hilarious, they didn't and were unbelievably happy to dump me off when my brother got there to pick me up. Basically in terms of post, I looked like a chipmunk for a week or two, and they gave me painkillers so I could lay on my face..This probably didn't help at all, I figured I'd share my experience so you can see it ain't no thang..And maybe laugh a little before yours..And I only took so long to recover because all four of my teeth were badly impacted

All I can say is after you get the IV you'll start to feel cold, then taste garlic and then you'll wake up in recovery room. Then they will try to get you to drink some water and it will ALL DRIBBLE OUT OF YOUR MOUTH. :icon_lol:
Don't try to bend over and tie your shoes you will fall over.

I got nitrous instead of general anesthesia, that was fun. Seemed like I was a million miles away but could still do what the doctor told me. I had to impacted and two not. I felt them use one of my teeth for leverage when they yanked out my top teeth. That sucked. After it I was chipmunk cheeked for a good two weeks. Just follow the sheet they give you that says what to do and have fun with the painkillers.

Yahoo. All I remember was the surgeon saying "Ok I am going start the IV valium now 1,2,3....."

I woke up alone with the worst dry mouth ever. Felt like my tongue was the size my foot. I could barely reach the cup of water they must have left for me and I thought I was going to suffocate because my tongue felt so dry and huge.

After that, no problems at all. Rinse as directed with salt water. Do not smoke, anything;)

Ice it as soon as you get home. Don't "suck" on anything or you'll end up with "dry socket" and be really F'd.

Dont sweat it. They knock you out by the time you realize whats going on your done.

When I had mine done they gave me novacane and laughing gas to make me sleep. Prop was that the laughing gas took longer to kick in then the novacane so they had to start drilling b4 i was out. I remember laughing like crazy and blood shooting all over the doctor and me was quite funny.

Make sure you include some fiber in your diet! I neglected to intake any fiber but got plenty of protein from muscle milk and other whey protein shakes. I also ate an unbelievable amount of ice cream for 4 days because the cold feeling of ice cream felt really good on my mouth. This was dandy and all until I realized that none of my nutrition for 4 days inlcluded fiber and that pain pills induce constipation. Yea, NO FUN! If I was to do it over, I would have definitely mixed lots of benefiber into my shakes or something!

Experiences are all the way across the board. I had a guy do mine that actually ended up losing his license and he focked my mouth big time. It's good now, but I lost the upper teeth right next to the wisdom teeth too because of his stupidity.

Sry to scare you, but that's WORSE case. You'll probably be hurting for a couple days afterwards, so don't have anything planned other than sitting on yor butt, playing video games, or whatever you do... lifting will hurt btw too... can't do that for a couple days.

Anyway, good luck, I'm sure all will be well. Too help make you feel better, my wife had hers out and felt no pain, ever, even during recovery. Still, i think it's normal to have swelling for a few days, have some pain, and generally be out of it.

DO WHAT YOUR DOC SAYS!!!!!!!!!!!

I got mine done with the IV Sedation. I had to fast for about 12 hours before surgery. I took a valium the dr. gave me, so I was loopy going to the damn office. They took me in the room and got me prepped. I only remember a few things about it I was so loopy. I remember a nurse telling me that they'd have to get a bigger bp cuff because my arm was too big for the large one. :woohoo:They tell me, "You're going to feel a bit of cold then a pinch." I'm like whatever, do what you have to do. I feel the cold spray and feel them insert the tube for the IV in my left arm. The next thing I see is the nurse inject into my arm 3 times with the sedative. She says "Count down backwards from 100." I fight to stay awake and count. I make it to 97 and my ass passes out. I wake up 1.5 hours later and they get me up. I think it's a great idea to try and walk on my own. :nono: Bad idea, I damn near fell into the wall in the hallway. They cart me off into my parents car and they take me home. When I get home, I'm awake for all of 15 minutes and then I passed out until the next day. Best sleep I ever had. :hammer: Of course this is just me. Good luck with the surgery.

taking the packing out sucked, but other than that, it wasnt too bad. I wouldnt worry yourself over it too much, just keep the area clean and free from food debree (sp) and you should be fine.

I must be the only one who said f that man. I only have 2 of them but they don't bother me at all. Sometimes I might bite my cheek if I'm madly chewing away but that's it.

man did i make great use of the the vicodins, I did the same. I prolly only needed enoough for 2-3 days, but I think he gave me enough for nearly 2 weeks and then told me if I needed more give him a call...I wonder why people get hooked? I didn't call though. It wasn't too bad. A couple had 4 roots instead of just 2 and they had to be drilled out. I was awake the entire time. The sounds were the worst part. The gauze also made me gag, but I ate dinner that nite.

thanks for all the advice everyone, the surgery went good. 3 teeth were impacted and they got em out without any trouble. they gave me the IV and i was out before i knew it and then in the waiting room. this morning i woke up and my face is swollen like a chipmunk or basketball or whatever u wanna call it, but is there anything i can do to make the swelling go down? i tried several ice packs and they just arent doing the trick.
