Just wanted to get an idea of what some of your guys' setups were like. I have been an avid read of Sound and Vision for a while but just have never had the funds to spend on home theator equipment. Have been running a base model 27" Wega with component progressive scan DVD for a while. It's time to upgrade.

I am looking at either a DLP or LCD TV no smaller then 60" - Ideas?
Denon 1710 DVD player
Denon 1905 Reciever
Speakers - was looking at some Def Techs - ideas?

Any of you have some suggestions or just general chat? What do you have?

My Setup is as follows

Sony 60" LCD Projection 60XS955
Denon 3805 Receiver
Axiom Speaker System VP150, M60ti, QS8s, EP350
Pioneer 568S DVD
Audiotron MP3 Player.
SA83000HD DVR

I was looking at about a $1000 total for some Definitive Tehcnology fronts, center, rears and sub plus the Denon reciever... this was found at Best Buy.

I looked up on AxiomAudio.com - those are some awesome looking speakers. Definately little pricey for my first setup but I bet they sound awesome. I am wanting to go with tower fronts because I do listen to cd's alot too but most are a $1000 a pair by them selves.

I was actually looking at that same TV only. They didn't have the model in store and haven't been able to run to Ultimate Electronics yet. I am more of a videophile and the slightest artifact, banding, color leak... pisses me off. I don't like the screen door effect of the LCD and watch alot of my shows in low light. How is the black level on that?

Black levels are good, could be better with a Neutral Density filter added, but all in all I am very happy with the set. Blew away the DLPs in my opinion. Go with the set that looks best to you, but if you get hung up on getting the "perfect" set you will never make a purchase. They all have their flaws. Sony is releasing new models now that are somewhat better, but SXRD LCD won't be avaliable til closer to the end of the year.

That is some of the best advice... I really needed to hear that. I have honestly been looking for a long time but never end up buying. Last time I looked they still had rear projection tube sets... Now it's LCD and DLP.

Never heard of a ND filter.. have to check that out.

I am a big fan of Sony's stuff... I get **** all the time.. but hey if it's that big and is almost a focal point of my living room... I want it to look sexy and Sony does a good job of this. This is also why I am considering paying almost 400 bucks more for a silver Denon dvd player.

I'd read up over at AVSForum on the Sony's as well as anything else you might be looking to buy. There are many user reviews and such that you will find useful, also there is much info as far as how to tweak whatever set you end up buying.

As far as the Silver DVD, well I'd rather have black, I think silver looks to gaudy. I'd look at the Refurbed Denons over at Dakmart.com. I know seems scary buying a refurb but I know several people that have bought them there and had great luck, saved a bunch too. They've got the silver 1910 for $196 not bad.

You wouldn't belive how long I waited to buy my 60XS, finally I realized that I spent so much time waiting when I could have bought something and been enjoying it instead of fretting over what the next new model might have.

Balanced Audio Tech VK-75SE tube amp
" ... " VK-51SE preamp
B&W Nautilus speakers [wife had to have them... NOT worth the scratch]

Not integrated into a home theater setup... my next project.

Pioneer Pro 1410HD plasma, about a week old. Amazing monitor.

The samsung DLPs are GREAT! Check out Costco, they had some fantastic deals on Samsung DLPs. Remember seeing one around 60"

Thank you very much for the link to that forum. I was looking for something like that. Also the refurb Denons... and I am a tad scared to buy but... for that kinda savings!

You have been a great wealth of knowledge, I thank you Sir!

I will check out Cosco, thanks mate.

Olevia (sp?) makes a really nice widescreen HDTV for pretty cheap. My buddy picked up one and it is an awesome picture

No problem, always willing to help other spend money,

Feel free to bug me for any info you need. In regards to the refurbs, I've got a friend who bought the Denon 2805 receiver from Dakmart refurbed, and its been running strong for over a year now. There are extended warrenties avaliable on them too, so you can cover your ass and get more converage than the warrenty on a new one to boot.

My brother has a refurbed 2910 and its had no problems. We are a Denon family :)

Also remember- Often in places like Best buy the set picture adjustments will not be set. They will just throw the TV up out of the box. Don't discount that one in the corner because the picture is a little dark. It may just need some picture tweaking.

I was on a budget when getting my AV. I got a CVT 30" widescreen HDTV by phillips, Pioneer surround sound receiver and speakers/sub, and a Phillips DVD player connected to the setup by optical signal. All the video connects are component vid as well, even the xbox :). It only cost about $1000 for the whole setup, but mind you I'm in an apartment so going big was not an option.

Yeah, you definitely have to do some tweaking when you go into the big chain stores, you never know what the person who was there before you did to screw up the settings.

Hey, that's no excuse, that just means you have to much furniture!!

To be honest the scaler in my Sony is better than most DVD players. I don't own a Denon DVD yet so I can't comment on it really. My pioneer looks better set to 480i and letting the TV up convert.

Hitachi Ultravision LCD 70" (Discovery HD Theatre looks AMAZING)
Sony 400 DVD/CD changer (I have a lot of television DVD's so I need a shitload of storage)
Magnepan Speakers ( review here Invalid Link Removed )

Hooked up with solid silver component cables.

Still getting subwoofer and receiver. I actually built this in the last 2 weeks and still going :)

Yeah, I went in to Ultimate last night and I got to talking with one of the sales associates and he was explaining that same reasoning that the scaler in the TV is most often better then the DVD player you own.

I can't wait to watch Discovery in HD all the time... was watching that last night and it looked so good on this Pioneer plasma.

I won't be able to afford the TV, power conditioner, reciever, speakers and cables. So I made a choice and decided I watch alot of movies, and the major part of movies is the sound, so that's why I am going to do the Monstor PC, Denon Reciever and speakers first and connect that to my 27" Wega RP. Then hopefully after the first of the year be able to afford a $3500 TV.

Home theater was never my priority, but I've been into good stereo gear for a long time. For speakers I can't recommend Paradigm more highly. They have a great line with lots of options, including in-wall speakers that sound great. Right now I have a Rotel R-970 BX I believe, bought it so long ago I can't remember, going to two Paradigm 3SE Mk III. Paradigm makes maller speakers that can used in a satelite sub combination, and sells them in packages too. For amps Rotel is the best I've found in the cost effective range. I'd definitely check out their line. In fact, they have an all in one system that I love and may get soon. It's a full surround sound receiver with I believe 80 watts per channel, Dolby digital, DTS, the works for decoding, built in progressive scan DVD/CD/MP3. Great looks too, great ergonomics.

Something to remember when looking at power ratings. When you look at high end stuff or high end aspiring stuff like Rotel, NAD, Bryston, etc, their power ratings seem lower than brands like Sony, Denon and HK. Be careful with that. Truth is most receiver/amps on the mass market will have their power tested with a specific test signal going into a resistive load with only one channel driven. Most of those receivers I've listened to will crap out and start clipping real quickly with all channels driven even if you're listening at moderate volume. The high end and pseudo high end stuff will usually be tested with all channels running into simulated speaker loads, so their power ratings while seemingly lower are much more realistic. My current 50 watt Rotel amp kicks the living **** out of my friends 900 dollar HK receiver, which supposedly puts out 150 watts per channel. The power supplies in mass market amps often can't handle the demands of a six speaker setup.

Also, keep an eye on the sensitivity of the speakers you buy. A 3db difference in speaker sensitivity leads to I believe a perceived doubling in volume. So the higher your speakers' sensitivity, the more options you have for amplifiers basically because your power requirements get reduced. You could go for a higher quality/lower power amp if need be.

As for Sound and Vision, it's a good magazine but my experience with mass market amps speakers, CD players etc steered me towards more high end or esoteric branded stuff. My friend's parents have a Rotel system still working perfectly, never been serviced, and they've had it since I was in high school. Bryston stuff comes with a 20 year warranty. Brands I'd recommend are Rotel (my favorite), NAD, Bryston and Adcom. Also Outlaw Audio has some impressive stuff at lower prices. They have these monoblock amps that pump out 150 watts and sell for only a hundred a pop I believe, with package deals if you buy more than one. So you could set yourself up with a preamp/processor and seperates for the whole system for a little under 1500 I believe, then get decent speakers and you've got a great system with ultimate upgradabilty.

This is the Outlaw Audio site, they only sell on the Internet:

This is the Rotel Surround Sound Receiver site with all models listed. I'd really recommend one of these, they're a great company and they make some kick ass equipment that's high quality and fucking pumps:
