I finally upgraded to DSL, and even if it is not "high speed" all the tiume, it is much better than dial up.

I've started downloading old wrestling videos: Ric Flair, Terry Funk, things like that using LimeWire, but it is still extremely slow.

Can someone recommend me agood file sharing program that doe snot have spyware and a place to get it?
Thanks. :)

Limewire from limewire.com is one of the best out there

No pop-ups like with Kazaa, plus searches are a lot faster with better results.

Some people like WinMX too, but I prefer Limewire.

FYI, peer-2-peer filesharing like with all three of these systems has been ruled to be completely LEGAL.

yeah, I concur re: limewire, it's an excellent app. The app isn't really the issue; internet traffic, router hops, etc. will dictate your download speeds.

I liked Limewire so much, I went ahead and paid the $20 to get LimeWire Pro. The downloads are 2x faster now and the search results are 100x better.

xolox is one I found that I like. No problem with spyware from it that I've seen. Ran AdAware the other day, nothing on my computer.

So you think they might limit the bandwidth of basic users?

Is the available library a decent size?

your download speed also depends on the other persons conection and the speed that they're allowing for uploads.

DSL is sketchy. Cable is MUCH faster for roughly the same price (unless you get a deal). I hated having Verizon and SBC DSL sometimes. Frustrating. Roadrunner cable, I've had no problems with and it made me pretty damn happy all around.

mIRC, if you learn how to navigate it, will often give excellent results. WinMX with MxMonitor. Shareaza. Limewire, but make sure it's a version without spyware. Morpheus used to be good. Never use Kazaa, unless you want your computer bogged down with adware, spyware, and every other type of garbage. BitTorrent, if you're careful what you download-BitTornado for BitTorrent is a good client.

Damn that is slow... but it also depends on the person who you are downloading pc speed. If you have DSL and the other person has a 28 k modem it's going to be slow. I am using k lite ++. When I first DL it, it kind of sucked. It was very hard to download new songs but it seems to have gotten better for some reason. I have tried to d.l some instructional guitar vids but they are kind of slow and are only 2 to 3 minute clips. I think if you are into downloading vids cable is you best bet but try K lite ++ and see how it works. It's free so you can't go wrong with that.

Unfortunatly, the DSL from the local phone company is all that is available in my area right now.

The local cable company or any other part like roadrunner will be at least 2 years away as they will not touch a new development until it is totally complete.

I am getting to the point where I am almost ready to ask for a refund...$40/month for what I wound up with is not worth it IMO.

If you have alot of files on your computer to share (I'm talking over 50 gigs here) , then the best application is DC++ (its a mod for Direct Connect) , it can be found here: http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/

I share over 120 gigs, I can find almost anything I want on it, and my speeds range from 120 to 400 KBs , depending on the user.

If not then give bittorrent a try

http://www.bittorrent.com/

and http://torrentsearcher.filesharingplace.com/ is a good place to search for torrents

I never really liked limewire, and mIRC is usualy really slow and you have to wait for queue

Also you can try out Netlimiter (http://www.netlimiter.com) , which lets you set your download and upload rate limits

I do appreciate all the suggestion, fellas...I download Kazaa Lite and it is way faster than Limewire, but the searches are pretty limited. I think I'll try bit torrent next and see how that works.

I'm getting between 600 and 650 kb/s.

According to the map, I shoul dbe within a 10 mile radius.

Does this show anything significant?
So that's not to bad... your upload rocks.. i'm jealous of that. I get 4000/512

10 miles is failry close so you shouldn't see speeds affected too much.

For music purposes, soulseek can't be beat. I'm actually kinda surprised it hasn't been shut down yet, as happened to Napster, Audiogalaxy (RIP, sniff, sniff), etc. For everything else I've found Bittorrent can't be beat, the only thing to watch for with Bittorrent is to start downloads close to the day they are released, or else you risk not completing the download.

Ive searched a few bittoorent sites, but most of them I foud lacking unless I want porn, which I honestly do not.

Is that just bittorrent.com? all I could find there was the actual program to download. On another site, however, I did find all of the Smallville episodes, but the download rate was something ridiculous, like 0.5kbs/second.

To search for torrents, use the second link I posted (http://torrentsearcher.filesharingplace.com) and from there use the Engine Torrent Reactor or TorrentSpy, those are usualy the best. When downloading a file, try to find one with the most number of seeds, but its not uncommon for the downloads to be slow.

I have all of Smallville Episodes from Season 4, my PC is always on, so if you want I can set an FTP account so you can download them.

The sites I like best for torrent purposes are kerrazy torrents (music only), torrent reactor, torrent portal and the pirate bay. Between the 4 of those, there is a wealth of media at your fingertips.

I have a problem. I need Microsoft Word 2003 because I don't have the full version and I'm not paying 150 bucks for the key. How can I download the full version or obtain a key without having to throw down all kinds of money?

I am sure it would not be hard to find with any file sharing program...limeware, k-lite, etc. Just make sure you download a file that says it includes the serial number or you wont be able to use it.

You would be the man!

But, I am so out of the loop I need season 3 first, which is downloading terribly slow.

I use emule a lot. It's great if you're patient, as you can find ANYTHING on there pretty much. The trick is to queue like 50-60 downloads at once, then you'll be getting 60-70k/s download all the time. Just have to make sure you don't connect as a lowID as that will basically make your downloads go SUPER slow.

Also, for certain things thepiratebay is good.

www.edonkey2000.com is by far the best file sharing program I have ever used and I have been doing it a LONG time.

- It's a distributed system so there is no limit to amount of peers you can connect to (I am connected to 810K right now, at night I've seen it get as high as 2.5 million). - It was based upon " in theory" the old emule network and greatly improved, now they have swallowed up the overnet network and it handles bittorents as well.
- It has hash recognition so you dl the file you think you are dl'ing or it alerts you with a icon letting you know you may be downloading crap.
- Has "partnering" so you can pull resources of others trying to dl the same file you are.
- IP masking
- Built in preview for audio and video files. (another assurance you are getting what you want)

This my first post and for the record I know little about nutrition, supplaments and anabolics (compared to most board members). However, I am knowledgeable in the computer/internet/security arena since that is how I make my living. Hopefully, we can learn from each other for a long time to come. (Probably from you more than me since this is dedicated to your guys expertise and not mine.)

P.S. - Yes I am trying to do as much homework as possible before I ask any questions. I have been reading this board for two days straight and I mean all day, at least 6 hours already today.

Jerry Lawler (odd fellow) lives down the street somewhat from me and Sid Vicious is best friends with someone I work with.

Never experienced Jerry being an A-hole but Jimmy Hart certainly is/was. Yeah, she was hot but dude's got a ton of money so I don't expect him to be running around with a fugly chick.
