Staying motivated over time..

Frank Reynolds

Board Supporter
I am wondering how you guys who have been in tis game for years, and years keep motivation up over time? It seems like everytime i get to my desired physique i **** up and take 5 months off, then need to bust my ass to get back..

I have not wrked since i have been training, and will be starting a full time job in the next few weeks, and have really been worried my motivation is going to go to ****.

How do you scheduale in your meals while at work all day? How do you keep going to the gym 6 days a week?

Its tough. I am on my first extended break in 6 years. I feel like I'm shrinking (and I have a bit) but my weight is still holding pretty steady.

How do you do it though? You just do. Its a simple choice whether you want to put in the effort of preparing the meals, going to the gym before or after work, etc....

I work in a cube farm so it's easy for me to have my meals at regular intervals - my cabinets are stocked! Same with the water, I'll start off the morning by filling my 2 1.5L bottles and running them through the work day.
I actually find meal timing the easiest during workdays, as on weekends I tend to slack by sleeping in etc.

I prefer working out late at night, so after work, I'll get home by 7/7:30 and then relax, eat and watch tv. As soon as it hits 9, I'm off to the gym till like 10:30..get home, eat a bit, more tv n then sleep.

For motivation, AM and a few other boards always keep me going..plus watching video clips of say Mariuz Pudzianowski or even The Rock's summerslam training clip just makes me want to keep pushing..plus the mirror, who can forget the good old mirror that always speaks the truth - a few narcissistic moments in front of the mirror pushes me even more!

It sucks but you'll just have to wait and build your life around your work schedule, just NEVER GIVE UP though!

Once you get into it and make it a part of your life it is easy. The motivation part really isn't a big factor for me.. the hardest part is that its an inconvenience. You basically have to turn your life into a routine and I'm lucky because my girlfriend and family are finally supportive. For example, the other day I was out with my girl and she looks at her watch and says "Its been about 3 hours. We need to get you home to eat."

Life is about choices. You get out what you put in.

setting goals and having a true desire to reach them .. buying an MD every once in a while and seeing pics of pros helps as well

I guess i am just geting nervous because i am not sure what i am going to do for work, and it seems so hard to get meals in so often if my job doesnt give me a break every 3 hrs..

I am sure it will all work out, i am just worried because i am seriously in the best shape in a LONG time(thanks bobo) and i have worked extremly hard to get here and i dont want to blow it.. But some times i am like damn i would just love to take a week off and eat some normal meals, and sweedish fish:lol:

That is another issue, i cant get a good workout when the gym is packed, i love going when it is empty, i am going to have to find a gym out in AZ, and see when the quiet hours are, and fit them in..

There's your first problem. Of course it would be nice if we had the gym to ourselves, but we don't. Just throw on some music and go at it, not worrying about anyone else. Think of it as a competition between you and everyone else in there.

I agree with Y2J as well. Once you get a routine down, it's all good. I also find the weekends to be harder than the weekdays.

And to expand on Dietrying's post. It's a lifestyle.

What time do you usually go, and what time do you start work? Are you tired during work?

I'm in college..my classes start at 9:30, so I'm usually in the gym around 7:15. I also like going early to get it out of the way. Sometimes if you wait around its easy to make excuses for not going. Just my opinion.

For sure man.. Right now i wake up at 6am eat and get to them gym by 7 to avoid the rush..

I am thinking when i get a full time job i may need to go at like 530 to have enough time to get showered and get to work..

I find throwing on my discman, and a good CD is key.....I also teach at my gym, spin class so it's important when I am there and people see me with my headphones on they know...Dont talk to me...:) But i go at rush hour, and I enjoy it...I do my thing, and i am good to go......Mon, Wed are tough because i teach....but other than that....routine......:) good luck.....

I have found that making weights a priority helps you construct your life around it. Eventually you learn to adapt and funnel the right amounts of energy into it. I think you get to the point of "no return" where you realize that it is too late to stop lifting for extended periods of time. This is part of living up to your genitals, this defines you as a man. (to a reasonable extent of course)

Do you have any links to the clips of Marius and the Rock? Marius is the baddest mofo ever.

Bump to the last post above me....interested in both!

The Mariuz vids are here:

Invalid Link Removed

I think one or 2 are interviews, and the other one is from his dvd.. the bar looks like rubber when he's squatting!
It's not the greatest workout vid, but enough to say 'ooh..aah...wow, i wanna be like him'

I'll get the link for the rock one n post it as well..

It can be tough...its not that I dont love everything that goes along with lifting - its that in order to make it a priority and get all the other things done I want to do I'd need 36 hour days.

Sometimes I get sick of tracking calories, making time for the gym, etc. and Ill rebel against myself and just fu*k off for a few days. Well, not really fu*k off - just try not to think about lifting and concentrate on other priorities. Its always nagging at the back of my mind though...I can't go longer than a week at the most without wanting to get back at it.

Like y2J, I work in a cube-environment so maintaining a diet during the week is easy. Also, my job has a well-equipped gym on the 1st floor so if I want to save time I can workout there rather than drive to the gym when I get home.

I havent had a training partner in over a year, sometimes that's been tough as there's no one to drag my ass to the gym when Im feeling like a slacker. I started lifting seriously about 4 years ago, and Im never going back to the skinny punk I was back then. That's motivation enough to keep me at it:) When you start reaching your goals and making huge changes with your body - that's something you've earned and worked hard for. Im not going to let that slip away just because I dont have time. F*ck time. Ill bend it to my will:)
