Have a powerlifting meet this saturday, first one ever, about an hour ago the nerves started acting up a bit lol. I cant really sleep now so I figured I might as well start a thread. Like I said this is my first meet, it is an APF meet, so those are the rules that it is going by. I decided not to bench with a shirt because a) I wanted to get my raw bench up as high as possible b) Im not going to win so I figured I might as well get my raw bench up. There are going to be some real freaks there. The Gulledge brothers, Dave and Kyle, are going to be there. I dont know if you guys have heard much about them, but they are strong as hell. Dave at 22yrs old benched 710, squatted 930 and pulled mid 7's. Kyle at 20 yrs old benched 600, squatted 903 and pulled 830, they are super strong. I dont think they are going to be competing in this meet though, Dave has a hamstring injury and is not wanting to make it worse for nationals this summer, and Kyle is preparing for nationals this summer, he may guest deadlift at this meet. For squat I have a pair of frantz breifs that are really good, then a frantz squat suit, but it is completely tore down, and after talking to exnihilo about it, it is basically not helping alot which sucks. Going to be in the 220 weight class, even though I am only weighing in at 204 in the mornings, but again since I figured I wasnt going to win anything in the 198's or 220's, I might as well just keep eating a ton and be as strong as possible, I just want to hit some huge PR's for me, I will be happy if I do that, which I know I should be able to. Its going to be in Kansas City. I'm so ready just to do it right NOW!!! I'm getting tired of waiting lol. Well, I thing I am going to go grab some more to eat since, well I have a 16lb leeway for my weight class lol. I'll post back on how it goes.

Good luck brother!!!

It is good to be psyched up for it, and I know it is hard, but try to save some of that energy for the meet, if you are all excited for it before hand, when it finally rolls around you might have already used up some of your mental steam

Also, would you mind listing some of your latest lifts, just curious

Ya, I am trying to stay as calm as possible right now, then just go psycho at the meet and tear the weights up lol. Here is what I am shooting for at the meet, bench:380-390, squat:465-480, deadlift: 465-480. My bench is way outta proportion when compared to my leg lifts. This is the strongest I have ever been, and after deloading this week, eating a ton, and just plain being at the meet fired up as hell I have no idea how much that will add to it.

Those are still solid numbers there 'Dawg. As for calming down try some mediatation (sp?). And good luck at the meet and I hope you hit some PR's.

this is probably a long shot, but any chance you'll be able to have some one tape it and get some video clips up on here?

One of my friends is going to video tape it on VHS, then I bought a dvd of the meet that will be available in about 30 days after the meet, I will also try and get some digi pics and maybe post them up. I will have video, its just a matter of if I can figure out how to get it posted or not.

Well it didnt go too bad, made a few mistakes and learned from them. Squat was first of course, so my opener was 405 there. I thought I was going to get an up command from the judges as they do for bench, but I guess not. I went down to parallel, stopped for a second waiting for the call because I knew I was there, thought "damn these guys want me to go low as hell" so i continued to drop to about 5in below parallel with my knees damn near in my armpits and said **** it and went up with it. Dave Gulledge was one of the judges and I am good friends with him and he told me that they cant give me an up command, so I got someone to give me a call for my next attempts. Went with 440 for my second attempt and that was super easy, I was thinking of going for 480ish for my third, but a friend convinced me I had 500 so I figured if there was any day i was going to get it, this would be the day, so I called in 500. (Bear in mind I have never had over 460 on my back lol) So I got ready for 500, was pretty confident about it actually, didnt even feel heavy, got down there and got up about 6 inches out of the hole and just couldnt get it up, I shoulda just went with 485-490, oh well. So 440 ended up being my mark which kinda pissed me off, but oh well, if i would have got 500 I wouldnt have placed any better so it really didnt matter. Then on bench opened with 335, and I knew the rack command was totally gonna screw me, I threw that up and as soon as I locked it out I racked it totally forgetting about the rack command, so that was red lighted. Then hit 355 easy and all whites, then went to 380 and got it, which I was pleased with. I was thinking of trying a 4th attempt at 390, but I was running out of gas and wanted to save some for deadlift. On deadlift ended up getting 465 which I was pleased with, hoping for more, but by the end of the day I was getting tired as hell, and cramps from hell too in my back lol. So it was a good day for me, personal bests on everything, well other than squat but I know I could have hit a pr, so I didnt let that get me down. I will be getting the dvd of the meet in ~4 weeks so I could post it then, thats about my only chance of getting a vid of it on here, might be able to get some pics though, a friend was taking pics so I will see if I can get some.

congrats man! that's really awesome that you were able to hit PR's on bench and deads and would have on squats ... i'm sure you learned even more than you realize right now and will do even better next meet
now its time to finally get your skinny ass over 205 and start tossing those weights around ;) jk

I agree on getting over 205, but I just dont know what it is going to take, I try not even to think about it any more and just see what happens. Its driving me insane.

Thanks WG, it was fun, but I am going to wait till I am alot stronger to do another meet. They are having another meet at the same place September 10th, if everything is going really good for me at the time I will probably do it, but that is a ways off.

Nice Job Nate! Those are some impressive first meet lifts.

I was wondering, how far down do the judges want you to go when you squat? Below 90 degrees? I got the impression that that's what they were looking for at your meet and I was wondering if that was more or less standard?

Thanks ivydude. When you are squatting down, they define parallel as when the crease in your hip is right below your knee, hope that makes sense.

Sweet lifts Nate (esp for a sub 205er). Did you compete in the 198's?

I should have, like starting 3-4 days before the meet I was eating like a pig, even more so than normal, I was eating a whopper everday and subbing in a 14inch pizza for my dinner, I was really spiking the calories up there for awhile, and somehow I was losing weight while doing that?!? Anyways, back to competing in the 198's I weighed in the night before, fully clothed with a sweatshirt and doc martens on, weighed in at 204, I could have easily made 198's the next morning, especially if I would have stripped down. But I really didnt care, I wouldnt have won anything in the 198's either, so I was just going for my own PR's, thats all I cared about, and I got them (other than squat, although I know I could have hit a big pr).

i got a question for ya buddy, so what's the plan for the next year or so? i'm guessing you may not be exactly for sure yet but i'm wondering what your goal will be in the future. will you be looking for size/strength/or continue the battle of gainning weight. it seems to me that you can only have one and not the other. i guess when you work on gainning the size your strength tends to go up some, but probably not as much as it did these last few months. but the weird thing is you put on some good strength these last few months but didn't see the size and weight gain you were hoping for. i know i know, i could walk 50ft and ask you myself, but i'm a lazy bastard.
