Help me pick a new pc CPU

I'm going to upgrade my old 1ghz AMD Athlon computer. I was researching a bit but still haven't really found an answer.
Out of these, which would you choose and why? I would like it for video editing as well as gaming graphics.

  • Pentium 4 3GHz 800FSB
  • Pentium 4 3GHz 530 LGA775
  • AMD Athlon 64 3400
  • AMD Athlon 64 3000 939
Those are my choices right now. I like the Pentium's because of the 800 fsb compared to AMD's 512 and the support for DDR2 ram. I like the AMD because it is 64 bit (Windows XP is 64 bit, and the future OS's will be too most likely), instead of the Pentium's 32.

Either way, I will be getting the Western Digital SATA Raptor 74 gig 10,000 rpm ultra fast hard drive. I will get a gig of ram, and reuse my old DVD-R drive and other components. For the video card, I may get the old, but still awesome ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, unless you can tell me about a better one for less than $200.

Thanks.

I have a P4 3.06ghz in my main computer. It is watercooled and overclocked to 3.5ghz :whip:

For you I would say the Athlon 64 3400
or
the P4 3ghz 800fsb.

Personally, I say go Athlon 64, it is a new CPU design, the 64bit will hopefully come in handy for some apps in the future,
and I think it'll be badass for video editing and gaming!

Athlon 64 3400 man. My computer I'm building has that same chip, with two raptors in a raid 0 array.

Sounds like you're building a very nice system :)

Nice. The Raid 0 setup will be sweet, so I hear.

This is what I have so far:

AMD Athlon 3400 w/ ECS 755-A2 Mobo
NVidia GeForce 6600 GT Vid Card
Hitachi 80GB 7200RPM SATA HD
Kingston 512MB X 2 = 1024MB PC3200 DDR
8X DVD-RW/CD-RW Drive
DVD-ROM Drive
Plenty of Firewire Ports and USB 2.0 Ports
Logitech Z-680 5.1 Speakers 505 Watts

I'm going with the 3400 Athlon cause the performance/price ratio is unbeatable. It's also a 64 bit processor which will be nice for future apps. I went with the 6600 GT vid card instead of the Radeon 9800 Pro, because the GT beats it in many benchmark scores and only costs a bit more. I would have gone with the 6800 GT which is top of the line right now, but I don't have the extra $150+ right now. My friend has the Logitech Z-680 speakers and they are simply amazing. Later on I might add another SATA HD and do the Raid 0 setting. I'll probably just use my old ATX case, possibly upgrade the power supply, and reuse/swap over anything else that I need. What do you guys think about this setup? What would you change?

Athlon 64 3400

I would also make sure your DVDRW is both +/- and dual layer if you can get it.

I would have gone for a 939 mb. But 3400+ is plenty fast so you probably wouldn't have to worry about it for a while.

And you did right by getting the 6600gt. Its the best at the $200 price point.
