So I'm pretty much the stereotypical meat head who just costed through high school and now I've managed to finagle my way through freshman year. The only problem is The study habits I have if u wanna call them that suck ass. So pretty much if u guys have any tips on how to study and more importantly study reading material, like when I'm givin pages to read how do I know what's important to write notes or and what to just keep reading over but not take notes. Links to websites that help too are welcome basically any help is welcome I don't feel comfortable going to someone cause I don't want to look like a clown baby...which I guess I am but I don't wanna look like on despite the fact I am. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks and God Bless.

Also my one teacher is a complete dick and doesn't give notes he just lectures in a very laid back conversational way. How do I know what to right down from what he says I've heard that if they say things twice to write it down but I'm just struggle bussing hard.

That's my teaching style btw. Kids only write down whatever I write on the board, but I'm not doing that 5 times a day, 180 days a year, for 30 years. If you heard it from me and you didn't know it before you walked in, write it down.

Thanks for the tips I just feel like I should write everything down but I know that's not good because then ill be studying useless things. Basically when u teach do u specific certain things u want them to learn. I have a hard time differentiating between what I'm supposed to be learning and what he's just saying to say. If that makes sense haha I don't really know how to put it into words. I guess u can go be the saying tht if the professor says it u should learn it but I can't imagine everything he says I should right down.

Good teachers introduce the topic at the beginning of the class. Use graphic organizers if you don't have time to write everything down.

couple things

1. Its not their job to hold your hand
2. 100% agree with honda. If you didnt knoe it going into the class than write it down. Just because it isnt goung to be on a test doesnt mean you shouldnt know it.

Pay attention to try and differentiate between pertinent info. Read future material so you will know be familiar with what your teacher is discussing in class... that will make class a refresher then you won't nee scrambling to write down EVERYTHING.

Teachers, well good teachers are there to help you succeed and help you understand the material. If he's going over it in class it's probably important. Most teachers I've had (outside of HS English) have NEVER read entire chapters in class they will go over the pertinent information. So again if he's saying it, it's more than likely important.

Sit down with him and ask his teaching style. Don't come across as asking where the answers are in his lectures. Just let him know what you said here and he'll hopefully see that as you wanting to try and do your best which will also show your dedication to your education which realistically is what teachers want.

That makes sense ill definitely do my best to be prepared prior to class, I'm a very shy person when it comes to talking to people and professors I get real sweaty and my heart feels like its gonna burst out of my chest and I get real flustered and unfocused so I'd like to try to do my best without having to go meet with him but unfortunately I might have to if I start going down hill in the class. I appreciate ur advice its much appreciated.

You want him to give you outlined dtudy guides for his test.. sorry but thats holding your hand. Go to class, write everything down, study everything and hopefully you do well on the test. As for how to study. Read through the chapter the day before class, pay attention in class and write everything down, same day look over your notes. You can re write them, re organize them, make flash cards, whatever you want. Thats it really. My last test was supposed to cover 6 charters. I skimmed studied all the chaoters except for 2 which I really drilled because I thought that was going to make up the bulk of the test. Turns out the test was really only one 2 chapters and they werent the ones I drilled. This is college. Get used to it

Students are afraid to ask questions. They're afraid of not knowing the answer and looking foolish...but do you think you'll learn by hearing stuff you already knew? Ask questions!

Most teachers / profs have office hours. Stop by (not the day before a test) and get noticed. Consciously or not, we'll cut you a break if you show effort.

The ultimate goal in my class is not to produce the next Shakespeare (specialized learning is for college). I want kids to learn basic life skills: when something is hard to comprehend, do you quit? Cheat? Drop it and hope it goes away? Or work harder?

I appreciate ur advice but as for wanting my hand held I still disagree with u I never said I wanted an outlined study guide for his test I simply asked on some good study habits and how to handle the situation when the professor doesn't use power points since this is the first one ive had like this. I'm not looking for sympathy i was just looking for advice

Remember that students control the class. And if you're paying for your tuition, you have every right to ask questions until you get what you need out of the class.

Highlight as you read. Once you finish go back and write down what you highlighted. Before a quiz or test go over these notes and rewrite again what you feel like will be on the test/quiz... Flash cards help alot also. Question on one side and the answer on the back.
