Are we an endangered species as bodybuilders?

[h=5]This is just a little something I posted on facebook, but I believe it to be true.
I am an endangered species. I live in a time when the ideal man is a weak and skinny, not even fit enough to lift his own bodyweight. I live in an era where men are brought up to be weak and skinny and being strong and muscular has become demonized and that everyone who lifts weights most be on steroids.[/h]

I'm not opposed to people taking steroids, in fact I plan on taking them in my mid 30s, but what I mean is I hate it when anyone who has muscle the general stupid public think "oh he must be on steroids." I just think bodybuilding in general is becoming a lost art form.

This is something I frequently discuss... I wouldn't say that bodybuilders are becoming an endangered species. I would say that, strong men in general are becoming endangered and replaced by skinny little hipster dudes that play the woman in relationships.

it all depends on ur definition of a bodybuilder....if you have to look like phil heath to be a bodybuilder then yeah it may be dieing because i think most men are striving for the "physique" type look...doesn't mean they aren't really bodybuilders but they rn't trying to become monsters either

this has more to do with men leaving and parents working and not being there for their kids to teach morals and hard work.a real bodybuilder is very rare weight lifters however are not as rare

omg stop using the term bodybuilder cuz i know for damn sure op and probly most of the people on this forum arnt bodybuilders. recreational lifter is a better term, but hardly anyone trains for a body builder goal. a lot of people here train for sports, crossfit, strength, confidence, that mental high, etc. and its being replaced by fat fuks not skinny people. the skinny people are just the lifters that fail

You don't have to be a monster on stage to be a bodybuilder. Most people on this board are probably considered bodybuilders.

Honestly, more people on this board could do themselves some good reading books instead of opinions of others lol!

It's the male gender that's endangered and the BB'er obsession over looks doesn't exactly help the cause. Women should be preoccupied by their looks, not men.

Exactly... im a bodybuilder... but i just started. I still think bodybuilding is growing there are more competitions than there uses to be... and i mean people that are starting up to been doing it for yrs... i do believe natural bodybuilding is dieing... i think its also mainly because how society supports that kind of anabolic society... not the natural look...

I laregly diagree/take a contrarion position with regard to the OP's assertion

Im in my 40's and for me, see more and more people that are in shape, attempting to get in shape, obsess about their health and bodies more now than I can ever remember.

I will take that one step further and say this. I recall "I" used to be something special just b/c I am in decent shape. Now? While I am not just average, I am not in some vast minority either.

So, I disagree whole-heartedly

Exactly! I've written a few papers on gender role reversals. I've come up with a few different theories but the majority of the shift all goes back to the industrial revolution and the women's rights movement.

Not that they have or were given rights which they should have, but the way men were demonized during that era. In the upcoming generations women don't want men they want control.

so when you ready posts here, do you see more "i bench this, squat this, and deadlift this" or more "my arms, chest, calves, quads are x inches?" its the first one, which makes everyone here powerlifters rigtht?

my point wasnt being a monster on stage equates to bodybuilder, it was that people here train for many other reasons than pure size. id say majority probly train for weight loss or because it makes them feel good

Just to clarify when I stated the term bodybuilder I meant it as a person who builds their body. Whether it be for size or strength and the two are pretty closely related, even if you train just for strength you'll still get some muscle growth. I am a bodybuilder, I am traing for size and strength. Am I a professional bodybuilder? No, but that doesn't mean I'm not a bodybuilder even if I may be not as strong as most people on the form since I've only been training correctly for a year.

this.....most ppl on this board could be some sort of "bodybuilder" trying to shape their body through training and diet...i mean who doesn't want to be bigger and leaner all while being proportional

and imo i'd rather build a solid body and frame than powerlift and for me after age 18 training for athletic purposes went out the window, got to get past the home town hero syndrome

When someone sculpts an undefined piece of wood into a defined, smaller, trimmer, more beautiful piece of wood, is that considered woodbuilding?

This makes me think of Pedro building a cake lol.

I have to agree. Men are now femanized to believe that skinny tight jeans and a skinny body is how you get women. You attract the opposite sex by becoming the opposite sex? That doesn't make sense. Im not even big and have been asked if I was on steroids before by a god damn nurse -__-. I've heard it numerous times that even girls believe men aren't men anymore. They're all ****inn little girls. The era of "body building" has gone to the hipsters. Skinny shrimp dicks

That proves my point exactly. This generation has changed. Im ****ing 19 and get milfs looking at me all day and then girls my age think im too big...im only 180 pounds ...

I wonder what its like out of the country. If women are in Canada or Europe are more prone to like manly men. I'd be interested in seeing some studies.

I've heard of, not studies, but personal experience s. They say all women like different things but its easy to see a trend and how it is changing. But then again women aren't important, the day I start cross fit to attract girls is the same day I burn all my money ;D

I started lifting a decade ago to "attain" women and respect. By no means am I bodybuilder; 5'9" with small bones and a fast metabolism, but I couldn't imagine a life without the iron. I'd be lying if I said "I didn't start lifting to impress other people." But something happened along the way, I fell in love with the challenge of a Friday night driving through a snowstorm to deadlift some plates of metal.

Some people think muscle is awesome, some people think that it is masking some sort of inferiority complex. But anyone who knows what it takes to put on 10lbs of clean muscle can tell you that it takes discipline and desire for no other reward than doing it. Granted, I've reaped the rewards of sustained effort over the years, but they didn't happen overnight. Have I gotten laid because I'm muscular? You're god damned right I have! Have I kicked someones' ass because I'm stronger than them? Hell yeah! Have I sustained horrendous lifting injuries for muscle that impressed no-one and insecure hipsters ridiculed? A few times! Have I gone to the gym because everything around me was falling apart and I don't use booze or drugs to deal with problems? Hell yeah!

Most of us will never see our name on the Sandow; 290lbs competition weight@ 3% bodyfat is almost impossible to get to, even with juice! But after a long day, at 12pm in an empty gym the reflection in the mirror says that it's not for lack of effort.

I hope I'm not the only individual here who doesn't lift to impress other people and especially women. I could give two ****s about what anyone thinks. I lift because it keeps me sane and because its an obsession. For some odd reason lifting is extremely fun. I love most about the lifestyle. However I do not like the competitive aspect. Its my understanding that bodybuilders never used to lift to prove anything to anyone. It was about camaraderie not ego. All that went out the window with the beanie during the summer, jewelry wearing supersized headphone bopping show offs who think working out means you are in a top model contest or fashion show while you're working out. Everywhere I go at my gym there is someone talking shyt in secret about someone else in the room. Its pathetic.

I've seen this quite a bit myself.

There were some quite amusing Crossfit images floating around here recently - super skinny hipster guys in all the latest crossfit gear.... I'm convinced there's really 2 things at play here -

1) gender power balance - women wanting control - I've had certain folks express to me that there can never be equality of the sexes until men are actively discriminated against

2) Money - if you can keep changing the game, then people always need to keep buying more sh!t to keep up with the Joneses

Thanks for the welcome guys!

Family and friends will never get bodybuilding; most think it is some narcissistic compulsion with the pills and powders. If bodybuilders are an endangered species it is only due to the fact that the greater percentage of fat people don't mind having sex with other fat people and increasing that disgusting gene pool. Enjoy the butter and sketti, I'll take the DOMS and whey isolate!

Have to agree, they want control. You see a skinny nerd with a hot chick. The hot chick can control his nerd to her whim. Girls like to be controlling. Until they meet an actually "man" and then they become submissive. The point is guys let girls be controlling if we all had a backbone and were real men then women would go back to being submissive.
