Who uses steroids?

Ok, so I'm gonna take a huge risk and will probably get mega-flamed and/or banned but here goes.

I joined this board after looking around and talking to some people about ways to gain an additional 15-20 lbs.

I was gonna try beastdrol, hdrol, mdrol, etc. Since a little more reading Ive decided that it wasnt for me, but i would continue to read the boards. What I have found is kinda disturbing to say the least.

A little background on me:

I got into BB and exercise in Jr. High. A friend bought a magazine to class and I was hooked. Did the local Sr. High BB competition 2 years in a row. Im no stranger to working out, BB, or information about supplements. I cant tell you how devastated I was to learn that Shawn Ray got busted with anabolics. Completely shattered my idea of health amongst professional BB. Its become a joke today actually.

fast forward 20 years and im here. I decided not to go the steroid/PH route because, well its just too risky. I don't care that PCT can help you recover. PCT will not recover the damage youve done to organs. It may get them back to a healthy status, but back to a pre enhancement state. I don't think so.

Anyways, what I do notice is the statistics that use them.

I look at post and also the user profile for information and from what ive gathered, the average age of users are 25, 5'5-5'7 and about 150 lbs. I actually had one guy tell me he got tired of his buddies out doing him in the gym so thats why hes taking performance enhancements. More on that in a bit

My main question is why would someone do this knowing all the sides.

Damaged liver
Less liver life
Testicular atrophy
hardened arteries
Symptoms of a 80 yr old in the body of a 30 year old

Is it to get chicks? I mean chicks dig muscles, but at some point, too much just turns them off. My opinion and several of you have posted this. Although, I could just tear up Linda Murray even at her prime.

Back to the guy.....
As he told me that, i thought, you cannot compare apples to oranges. If he was your biological brother sure you could be upset, but to be upset because your genetics say you'll be this tall and have this muscle density and his will be this. Blame your parents.

I have a fiancee that has Lupus. Her mom had it. Genetics is a bitch. Make the most of it.

Let me know what or why you think guys do it? Me I wanted to develop my legs a little more. I like the way I look, but at the risk of shorting my life or potentially ****ing it up so I can be happy with myself is not a sensible way of thinking.

One other thing I notice. We have the same symptoms that someone that has a eat disorder. All sticks and bones and yet still see themselves as fat. Ive seen guys grow and they still say, im small.

So serious discussion. If your intent is to flame, just spare me. Im really looking for a reason why people do this and put a lot at risk.

Also, for the sake of saving an argument, Legit HRT, muscle wasting conditions, etc is not considered abuse and I understand the use of it. So im talking none supportive use.

Why do people smoke or chew tobacco? To look cool and then die early or have rotten body parts chopped off?

Why do people drink?

Why do people eat processed foods?

Why do people drive fast, have unprotected sex, join the military, leave the house....etc?

I'll tell ya I do it because I like to work out and I like it to show and this is just another level of it....like going from masturbating to internet porn to having a night in a Nevada bunny ranch...just another step.....but a much bigger and better one :D

Just a guess here, but do you live in a bubble?

To echo ^^^ above me, it's just another step that some choose to take. Personally, I haven't done it. But I also don't see a need to because my goals are to never walk a stage, never enter a contest, and never get so serious that it would become an option. Maybe I'm different, but I lift to better my health because what I used to be was a LOT more than what i am now (fatty mcfat fat).

But hey, I take my own risks in other areas without fear. Tobacco? Yup. High speed? Skid lid on a cruiser doin' 100 on a back road enough? Plenty of other stuff I do on a daily basis that could have more catastrophic affects than steroids, but it really doesn't matter to me one bit. Those who choose to use, do so. Will I ever? Hell, if I only had the money...and didn't spend it on tattoos, bike parts, or art supplies!! LMAO!!

What's a stareruid? Also, what's "a eat disorder"? Is that like, "an eating disorder"?

I do not believe that you wish to have a serious in depth conversation on the use of performance enhancing substances. From your post it is clear you have researched user data and formed a set of judgments on these members. You are aware that some do it for vanity, some do it to run faster, jump higher, longer, and yet some do it solely to elevate their quality of life. If you are truly looking for a reason people use PES, then begin from an unbiased and unfettered stance. Remember, speculation just makes a spec out of u and some guy named lation. Woooooo!

Ok, just read the OP once again. Dude, consider this concept - WORK. Yeah, that's right. Work. Get in the gym, push harder and harder, take your time, and forget about all this crap you're worrying about. If you're spending so much time researching the use of something that sounds like you are dead-set against, then screw it. Spend the time hittin the plates instead. Less cerebral, more visceral.

Think about it like this. You got the guy that wants to soop up his engine,he's done everything he possibly can to keep that motor naturally aspirated,but....he wants more out of that engine. What's the next step?? Some high-performance modifications, becuase it is the only way he knows for sure that he is going to achieve that kind of power.

On the flip side,if you don't maintain that engine, and just beat the crap out of it eventually it will give out.

its always funny to me when I read these kind of threads...From my standpoint I have used steroids 9 years ago and like many, was retarted in how I did it...Too young, no pct, half ass diet etc...Fast foward to today and I am in the postion to use again...Why...Well, because I am 10x more educated on juice and most of all, I have done all that I can to be as big as I can and have officially hit my genetic potencial. Its not to get chicks, Im marrried, its not to play sports (x college football player)...Its to increase my muscle mass and too look better...To look the way I have wanted to look for the last 9 years of natural training...No I am not gonna use cycle after cycle untill I am a monster... My personal feelings on juice is that it is completely missunderstood by our liberal media and made out to be as bad as meth/coke/heroin ect... Yes it has sides, but sh!t if you drink too much water you ll die, so use everything in life in moderation and educate yourself and you'll be golden... Just don't pass your judgement down on others and keep your opinions to yourself...

LOl show me the study that says injecting testosterone will damage your liver. Only oral steroids stress the liver. Should only be ran for 4 weeks at a time. If someone has liver damage they abused them. Just like you can drink in moderation with out liver damage. But... If you drink heavily every day for years you will have liver damage. You need to research more and know what your talking about. Its steroids and not steroid. They are all diffrent with diffrent levels of risk. Plus if you knew anything about bodybuilding you would know bb's use much more dangerous things than steroids. I have yet to see steroids kill a bodybuilder but insulin and lasix surley can.

the original post has major add.

most of the effects of steroids reverse themselves when you come off. liver damage? iirc a methylated cycle isn't as hard on your liver as drinking heavily would be. Alot of what the public believes about steroids is extreme cases that are blown up by the media. Arnold is doing just fine and he was popping dbols like candy when he was 16.

To all that posted Im not against. Hell I personally feel like as long as you aint hurting someone else then why restrict it. Ive even had the conversation that they should make a steroid league. Who can hit the most f'n balls out the park, run a 100 in 4 sec., etc.

Im asking about the mental aspect of doing it. The people around us see us getting bigger, stronger, faster, but we don't see it ourselves.

T-AD, I hear ya bro. I didn't spend a whole bunch of time collecting data, and doing surveys, etc. and I do get it in. Hell, Im even a victim of my own question. For me though, I realize that my chest will only develop a certain way or my legs will sweep in this direction.

@waynaferd, I wish I lived in a bubble. On a serious note, people are gonna do what they want to do and I know that. I guess its an issue of I know the risks, but either I dont care or they wont happen to me like that.

Bold portion is what I was going to add, myself.

I also really like the engine analogy.

I haven't juiced, but I've studied it a whole lot (I just love learning all this stuff). If I were to use, it would be based on this: If I'm already 100% on point on my diet, training, rest, etc., then why not add in some variables that when used correctly can make my progress THAT MUCH BETTER?

As has been pointed out, sure, there are sides - but it's all about knowledge and responsibility. I've seen a ton of people die in alcohol related incidents, but I can't say I've had any friends die in anything related to steroids. The media has totally built them up and they're dangerous just like anything else and deserve to be respected - same as owning a gun. Treat things with respect and only use properly and once you fully understand them.

Someone dying from steroid-abuse is about like a 12-year-old who takes a gun to school, not understanding the consequences or how to really use it and shoots himself or a friend playing around.

I'd say the self-image issue is more of a trust issue, IME. Just because the normal body-fat % for American men keeps climbing higher every year, doesn't mean suddenly my body fat % is right, just because you fell out of the bottom of the overweight bracket! When a country accepts obesity as the norm, how can you accept what those very same people are saying to you as to how you look? Same thing with muscles. America is LAZY! The fact that you have ANY muscles makes you HYOOOGE! to the rest of America! It's all about PERSONAL goals, because if you're going by what other's think of you, you'll be wrong everytime! Hence the lack of trust being the issue! Just my opinion!

Yep, same concept. See, here's my deal. I'm short and light. It seems like everyone automatically disrespects people of my ilk, since we're not very imposing. Thus, I am on an never-ending quest to increase weight (because I think it'll stop me from getting dismissed automatically), but I always think I'm fat, so I'm always cutting as well! All the while, I'm listening to people telling me to gain weight, but that I'll look gross at my target weight of 175, and so I've developed a complex (a pretty serious one assuming I really do have as little fat as people say). It's pretty unnerving to me actually! But if that's my cross to bear, to constantly work on losing fat/gaining muscle, and exercising to look and feel better, then I'm blessed!

Oh, and I forgot, what about the cancer and AIDs patients who "use" gear? Suppose they or their doctors are concerned about horrific steroid side effects, when in fact the steroids are improving there quality of life at least 10x, and quite realistically keeping some alive?

You should go post your question on one of those boards, too, since that would make about as much sense as putting it here on a bodybuilding forum.

Well my point is not all steroids cause liver damage. Plus do you really think four weeks of an oral steroid is going to cause irreversible damage to you liver? Also I'm not as concerned about how big my muscles are as I am with speed and strength. I do need to maintain a certain weight because I don't want to fight less than heavyweight. Ha I hate dieting. I took sometime off training. I personally will be done with all anabolics because I've realized I can't maintain more than 240lbs without steroids. I don't wish to stay on them forever so its not logical for me to keep fluctuating up and down in weight. But without them I probalby would of never even been 240lbs lean. Also anymore weight would probably destroy my endurance anyway. Ha actually I know it does cause at 260 plus lbs I can barley run 3 miles. So you see to me it was worth it until I realized it wouldn't get me any further.

seriously all liver damage repairs itself unless you get to tissue necrosis levels (odds are you are dying at that point), which is well documented. So the first 2 don't count. Testicular atrophy does reverse itself if you even experience it. In 18 months of TRT, I had no testicular atrophy.....

And seriously, i'm not sure what "Symptoms of a 80 yr old in the body of a 30 year old" really means. I don't know of any steroid users who feel that way when they come off.

Hardened arteries I can see being a valid issue, but in the end, a person who eats at mcdonalds or arbys for lunch 5 days a week does no better.

Different people use steroids for different reasons, there is no simple answer. One of the things you have to separate is who you see + hear posting on this (and many other boards) vs who are the actual primary users.

John Ramano makes some good points, but his logic is flawed. He always makes these grand statements about how steroids arn't dangerous because they have medical banefits, or that famouse "show me the dead bodies" quote.

1) Although my mom medicines might not be the worst things in the world, it still wouldnt be a safe idea to assume that I could tke lerge doses of her medicine, just because the compounds do have some benefits for her.

2) Look at all the wrestlers who don't make it to 40, and just have "natural heart conditions". Im sorry, but that percentage of early deaths for heart disease dose not exist for the steroid free community.

I do belive that steroinds arn't as bad as the general population says, but i also believe that John Ramano takes this a little too far with his big grand tatements in the matter.

My family doctor who i've been close w/ for years, put it in simple terms. His opinion on anabolic steroids "if steroids were legal in the US like they are in basically every other country, there would be very few obesity issues b/c doctors would treat those cases with steroids. Not that I condone using illegal products, but when in the right hands " meaning educated" steroids are no more harmful than thousands of other things people put into their body everyday that are legal." Now go right your research paper or whatever the hell you are doing with the information you are trying to prod outta people.

In complete fairness, I think your doctor is a little off. I doubt that we could give obese people steroids, and they would all become gym rats. Also, a fat person on steroids would have to be offly careful to keep estrogen low.

I agree 100% w/ that, lol. My point was he completely agrees that the media portrays steroids in a completly wrong way based on a few bad high profile cases and that they are in reality about as safe as anything else we do. "Chris Benoit killed his family due to roidrage" my ass, he went nuts, steroids may have made him more edgy than normal, but they didn't create a killer, they may have made an aggressive, disturbed person a little worse. That's just one example of how mixed up things get about steroids.
