Hey fellas. When I go to the gym I keep my phone in the car. I don't want to talk to people in the gym let alone someone on the phone, but it seemed that everyone around was talking or texting. Just wanted to get everyones opinion whether they think phones should be kept in the car or in your pocket.

I keep my phone in my pocket because it is my MP3 player. Plus, if something were to happen and I need to be contacted it's there. Plus during cardio I can watch a movie or something to keep my mind off the bike and let time pass.

I've let myself slip and taken a call/texted someone while lifting, but it's few and far between.

I send the occasional text between sets. I dont see why anyone having a phone in the gym will interfere with your workout so who cares?

I was using my phone as a stop watch when I was doing OVT training for timing sets, making measurements, and clocking stuff...and an occasional text if it is from a lady, otherwise ignore it.

Cell stays in the car. I don't even like having a workout partner. I rid myself of anything that can cause me to lose focus. I'm in the gym for myself, the rest of the world gets left behind.

I log my workouts using an app in my Iphone which is handy and I use the MP3 player in my Iphone while I work out.

I've been guilty of talking on the phone at the gym before but no so much in recent times, but I don't hold any equipment while I do so, I'll wander out of the weights section when this happens.

It's people who insist "I'm still using" a squat rack or something while talking on the phone or to someone else at the gym that I want to give a barbell enema to. That definitely ****s me.

I don't have an issue with those who use the cell phone as long as they're not hogging any equipment. I carry it with me because I can be called to work OT and I have to let them know ASAP if I'll be available and I love OT pay.

I leave mine in the car unless I'm expecting a call, which is very rare. In the gym it's just me, my mp3 player, and the weights. I don't have a problem with other people having theirs though, doesn't bother me unless it causes them to physically get in my way.

keep the phones in the car, but i originally started to going to the gym to release stress, so it gave me an opportunity to get away from everyone and everything in life, now i only bring the phone in the gym if i'm expecting a call when i might have to cut the gym short that day

It's not the fact of a person just having the cell phone on them that "bothers" me. It's these guys that bring the phone and leave it on full blast ring, why'll im in the middle of a set I don't want to hear the fu***ng Beatles blairing next to me. And if that's not bad enough the guys that sit their and have full blown conversations. I'm in the gym to do one thing, lift. That's my time to get away from all the other bullsh** this world has to offer.

I keep my cell in my bag which is on the gym floor. I keep my belt, shoulder straps, post wo shake, and car keys in my bag also. My phone is an mp3
player, so I connect my rocketfish bluetooth stereo headset to the phone
and I listen to my own music, not the gay music the gay gym owner wants
to play. And if I get a text or phone call, I can press a button on the headset
and answer the call or not. I never answer the call though unless it's the little misses. Anyway, I highly suggest this headset, it sounds incredible, there
are no wires attached to your body, they are comfortable, the battery lasts
forever, and they're inexpensive.

I can understand if you are a parent, by all means keep your phone on you incase, but at least silence it. The thing that bugs me are the guys that get on a machine and end up using it for about 30 min, because in between each set they have to call or text some chick and let her know how much weight he's lifting at the gym. Get a life.

I use iFitness. For two bucks you can't go wrong, and they are always updating it. You can build your own workouts, if there is a specific exercise you do that isn't in the app you can create it yourself, update your logs to email and it has an inbuilt graphing tool. Can't recommend it enough.

Talking and texting on the phone should be left out of the gym. There's a time and place for everything. If i'm waiting to use something it better not be for a conversation. Ilift heavy and don't need b.s distractions. I know they pay every month too but, I have a limited amount of time and i want to get my moneys worth. If you're not serious- GO HOME and come back when you are. There's a reason your either scrawny or fat. get serious or go home. LOSERS

haha ok... how is the fact that I shoot off a txt message in my 45 second downtime between sets disturbing your workout.

I don't see cell phones in most instances as a distraction that hinders my workout. I have very rarely seen them used in a way by others what hurts my workout.

I give some people some slack. If I have to wait an extra minute to use the squat rack because someone is checking their phone, I chalk it up as karma for the times I take the squat rack for 45 minutes at a time during a leg workout.

I just imagine a thread somewhere, made by some gym newbies that reads "I am tired of people taking up the rack to do squats for 45 minutes. Then I used my cell phone and the same guy gave me a dirty look. WTF"

Hell yeah! i love that app. It's not the sharpest looking one out there but it is very versatile. My iPhone is strapped to my arm for w/o logging and music and I have a sony bluetooth stereo headset paired with it. I like the b/t simply because cords get in the way especially for things like rows and squats. Just pisses me off. No calls or texts though. Better things to do.

45 seconds isn't disturbing to me, But it shows your mind is elsewhere and not focused on what your doing. Every serious bodybuilding video I've ever seen shows the lifter focused on his next set, not whats going on outside of the gym. What irritates me is waiting to use equipment while some lame plays on his/her phone. I don't have all the time in the world to train. 45 seconds not a big deal.

Maybe ask if you can work in a set or two? I personally never have a problem with someone working in if they ask nicely. If they're rude though they're more likely to get thrown over the balcony.

You pay for your gym membership

You pay for your cellular bill

It's none of my business

If someone is wasting time on a piece of equipment while on the cell phone I ask them what do they have left? Usually they get what I am saying and they move on...in both of my gyms though, there are rules that If you have a phone call, move to the back or near the front door...it's never a problem at either gym that I attend.

I sometimes keep the cell in my pocket just in case an emergency occurs. Otherwise, I'll text certain people to let them know I won't be near my phone because I'm at the gym.

Mother****ers talking and texting while taking up space at the gym is one of my biggest pet peeves. I want to shove their freaking cell phones up their asses. What the hell are they working, their mouth muscles? Seriously. I keep my phone in my purse, locked in the trunk. Gym is my special time. I can't even talk while I'm working out. My boyfriend can't even get near me because he knows how bad my bitch mode is. He says I got B!TCH stamped on my forehead.

i dont mind the texting so much as the talking. when im trying to squat i don't always use an ipod because there are days when its distracting. so when im trying to get under the bar and i hear someone yacking away on their phone it bothers me. the same goes for the casual gym goers who spend more time having loud conversations with eachother than lifting. the talking at times can throw my focus off if its too close to me. but as far as someone texting, go ahead. as long as youre not taking 10 minute rest breaks on a piece of equipment i want to use, or if youre my spotter i don't care.

My iPhone stays in my pocket for music and i've got some wireless headphones but the phone is set to airplane mode so it won't get calls.

I don't have time for interruptions. The only thing that pisses me off more than A-holes talking on their phones in the middle of the gym is when someone comes up to me while my headphones are in and so obviously on. WHAT... WHAT the F--- could you possibly need. Need me to spot you benching 225... Grow a pair.. !!

Emergency phone call while you're in the gym??? Probably about the same odds as winning the lottery. Of all the yakking on cell phones I've heard in the gym I"ve never heard anything other than idle chatter or senseless rambling about what you're gonna have for dinner or who's sister called you yesterday. So get off the phone, lift the weights, and stop using lame excuses to carry your cell phone everywhere you go. Trust me, the world will continue to spin without getting in touch with you for an hour or so.

Wait, whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

So, let me see here, you've never seen big Ronnie bouncing his head to that tupac music playing in the back ground in between sets? Hell, the man is shooting a video for goodness sakes. You are saying that a camera man asking him questions in-between sets wouldn't shake his mental? Nope, why? Because it shouldn't shake anyone's mental. You never seen Flex bobbing his head to "name that tune" in the background between sets?

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?

Shooting a txtmsg has nothing to do with being focused on your next set.

The only reason why seeing someone shoot a txtmsg or being the person doing it will alter your mental focus is if you have a serious concentration issue, perhaps add. Or, you are easily shook.

Listening to music isn't the same as talking or texting someone. I've trained with more than one competitive bodybuilder and none of them are carrying on conversations with people outside of the gym. Its hard to talk while puking between sets.
I'm not the only person on this post that feels this way, although there's fewer of us- kind of like fewer big guys at the gym. The little guys at the gym on their phones will quit going before they attain any real size, and always wonder why they couldn't get big.
I think the little tard on the phone has ADD because he can't sit down and focus on whats in front of him. His mind is elsewhere, proving he's just spinning his wheels and waisting his time and mine. I'm not distracted by him- irritated.

So Ronnie Coleman isn't a real bodybuilder????

Flex wheeler,

Jay Cutler,

Dorian Yates

Lee haney??

Arnold?

None of these guys who talked in the gyms, recorded shows, and listened to music aren't real bodybuilders?

I think that anyone who is annoyed at a person sitting away from your area texting has absolutely something wrong with THEM not the other way around. You are wasting YOUR OWN energy being worried about some twerp texting and message on their phone. If the guy is wasting time on a machine, tell him to move, plain and simple.

Ever see any of them on the phone at the gym? Texting? Nope! They're REAL bodtbuilders. The lames on their phones aren't.

Never said anything about recording videos or listening to music. The subject is cell phones. I shouldn't have to tell the lame to move. He should go and deal with the important situation going on on the phone and come back later.

Today at the gym there was a tard having a conversation on his cell phone "durring" hack squats. One hand on the phone. Hack squats. What a lame a$$. At least he was doing something, huh. Great example.
