I would go with OpenOffice. It operates a lot like the old school Office XP/2003 suite.

Or, take your broke ass to the store and buy a "student" copy of Office 2007 for $120. ;)
 
Research the "Blue" edition of Microsoft office 2007 on the interwebz....it should do the trick.
 
Offering advice to someone on how to download something illegally isn't really a smart thing to do. If they would of known how or was willing to pirate, then it would of already taken place. If he had no idea on how to use these download sites then you're basically opening him up serious possiblities of getting infected with a virus/trojan etc.
 
word 2007 should be free because it sucks so much. They always make things worse with new upgrades. They always make simple things harder to do and make the program just look nicer with all their fancy useless eye candy.
Edit: I like Office 2003 the best. Just downloaded Ope Office and love it. I'm uninstalling crap Microsoft Office right now.
