Never has a band ever enticed me as they have over the years. They went through some hard times, but none-the-less, they've delivered "Metal Up Your Azz" for over 25 years!!

The whole process of them making that album was childish in every aspect from lyrics to concepts and so forth and exposed a side of them that was not very becoming. BTW who are the members? I thought Jason was gone. Who has replaced him?

Hopefully for them and me they will produce something worthy of the Metallica reputation.

I have the DVD and to be honest, I found it to be really eye-opening. Not in a bad way, just a different percpective on their side. The whole Dave Mustaine bit was a long awaited talk and needed to happen, IMO.
 
The Day That Never Comes is not, IMO, much at all like their old stuff. Cyanide is a bit more reminiscent, but the frenetic energy is lacking when you stack it up to Kill Em All or Master of Puppets.

Getting old sucks, but I will always fondly remember Metallica and appreciate their new stuff in a different sort of way.

While i agree that it isn't like the early metallica years, the songs are very much reminiscent of their success in later times imo.

My latest research tells me there's still only one alternative to getting old. :(

I'd be interested to see if it even gets radio air time so I can get a listen.

I actually liked the DVD. It shows a side of bands that often goes unnoticed. There is a reason not many bands have even eclipsed the decade mark of success. It's not easy keeping everyone happy.......kind of like a marriage in a way lol! :D

I agree, The Day That Never Comes reminds of the Reload album except that they try to force a little Justice like instrumentals at the end. James doesn’t have the same killer instinct in his voice but at least Kirk Hammet is back to being more than just a second rhythm guitarist.

You are right on with that assessment imo sir! :)

While many didn't like "Load" and "Re-load", i certainly did. PLENTY of great tracks on those albums. I LOVE "Ronnie" myself.

Oh hell yeah, I'll take Load and Reload over that Saint Anger garbage any day of the week. I think Metallica is as right on as they could have been with this new album. If only we could get James back on the booze...:head:

Lol, man i like boozed up james better myself. I guess this growing up reality really does suck! :(

The guy has a family and kids now which takes priority in the grand picture by far............but i still miss the old mentality! :head::head:

Oh yeah,
James is totally a family man now. Great for him and his family/kids but shitty for the music community as a whole. No matter what Metallica puts out now they are going to be compared to their old albums which were some of the best albums in metal history, it's pretty much a lose lose situation for them. As long as their new music can be looked at in context it can still be enjoyed, maybe not immortalized but enjoyed..
 
Well put man. Too many people compare the early days to eveything they've ever done. They've put out great music on every level they've hit at this point.

I've been involved in music myself as long as i can remember. For a band to make it as long as they have, you HAVE to meet the market halfway at some point of your career to continue to thrive.

Some may call it selling out, but you know what, they have families to feed too. They're not young bucks jamming like the early days of "Kill'em All". Just like anything else, music is a buisness.

I think this song sounds very much like it belongs on an album that should have followed "Load & Reload." Incidentally, I haven't been a Metallica fan since "Load" came out. I last saw them in 1996 and thankfully the only song off that album that they played was "Until It Sleeps." This happens with a lot of bands though. They seem to work backwards as far as songwriting goes. Being poor and hungry makes for better music than being rich and in therapy.
 
I just think it's harder than most people think to be continuously creative and make music that is deemed "Not selling out." In their early days slumming it out (Living condition wise) with anthrax, they both surely made music that was both innovative and explosive at the time. Hell, metallica toured with ozzy during his "Ultimate Sin" tour. That's when they really were put on the map in a more grandious presence.

Granted, i hate when bands get to the point of changing their overall image to make ends meet, but eventually those benefits clearly begin to outweigh the risks involved. Money and a better sense of stability being the major benefits in the end. Bands like metallica remember what it was to struggle to get to the top, and as a result many change their image in ways to remain there.

I think it's hard enough to make it in the music industry today alone, but making it as long as they have says something about the band as a whole.....sell out or not.

The therapy worked!......well, kind of anyway lol.

If "The Day That Never Comes" and "Cyanide" are example of what the rest of the material is like then I'll likely skip it.

Like slow mentioned "The Day That Never Comes" sounds like a Load, Reload...Unload ;)

I'm not meaning to slam anyone personally. I have been listening to some of my favorite bands since 1975.

I have not been able to take a Kiss record seriously in nearly 20 years.

I did not get the Resurrection Judas Priest reunion album becuase it sucked...so does Nostardamus.

I have not purchased a Queensryche album since Empire (I'm lieing...not a great one since Empire)

Halford and Tate are my favorite singers.

My boys Van Halen....uuuhhhgggg.

I grew up and I got over it. My loyalty is not unconditional anymore nor is my $20 for a CD. My musical tastes have become so diverse that it needs to be very good in "that genre" regardless of the band, otherwise I just move on. Van Halen or anyone for that matter.

But most of my favorite bands are has beens 10 or more years ago anyway.

But I am into Pink....uh......uh...uh!

I don't know her music but for a few singles. But I know the character "Pink" and I am "picking up" what she is "laying down" if you know what I mean. I'd hit that "Until It Sleeps" :D

I'm with B on this one. I am a big fan of early Metallica but as far as entire albums are concerned I haven't liked anything after And Justice...

That said I'm not going to trash them.

To me the appeal of metal is its rough edges and raw energy. Seems that as metal bands age, they try to make their music more polished. Something that ends up being self defeating; the end product is just pretentious (e.g. St. Anger). One alternative is to recycle the same music and risk be labelled stagnant - another AC/DC album anyone? The third option is to simply evolve into another genre and abandon one's original fanbase. Not an enviable position.
 
I've gotta say that my favorite Metallica was by far the 2 cd S+M. I can't imagine what it was like for those symphany members who are used to a more "refined" audience to play in front of a bunch of Metallica fans.

I'm gonna disagree there bro. That is Metallica sound, and the long ass Hammet solo in there is just priceless.

WERD UP SON!!!!!!!!!!!! I herd it yesterday for the first time. I mis those days watching "a year in the life bro"... Classic brother memories no doubt son. I was in hot topic the other day and saw metallica on the cover of some metal magazine and i almost cried.....my boys are back finally.

There is no florida date posted as of yet. :(

However, i'm fairly certain they'll be hitting up tampa, fl on this tour. They always have in the past. I have some very good connections at the St. Pete Times Forum where they'd be playing. :head:
 
ive had this album for about a week now (if anyone wants the link to the torrent feel free to ask). In my opinion its not much, if at all, better then st anger.

I agree with you buddy, early metallica trumps all. In all honesty, this isn't too bad overall.

I do miss the puppets days though. :(
 
I like some of the tunes. Some mellow, some with a crunch. Not old school by any means, but still an major impovement overall imo.

i think hammet would be a much better guitarist if he either learned how to use a wah(steve vai or satriani are great examples) or ditched it all together(john petrucci and jeff loomis for the most part)
 
I like hammet myself. James Hetfield is one of the best rhythm guitar players/front men in the buisness. He's not what he used to be, but the man is a legend all the same.

Metallica will live in infamy!! :dance:
 
Song number 7 is my fav by far (The third version).

Great song imo. The main riff is pretty catchy.

Itunes is pushing death Magnetic alot. they released a 4th single today of the album. cant they just wait 3 days?
