Regular barbells, even without a spot. Obviously can't push as hard but if you are comfortable with the weight than it is fine. Obviously don't max without a spot.

Yup. There's been some pretty convincing arguements that the smith machine is a terrible choice for most compound movements. Can screw up your motor engrams(programed nervous system order of firing what muscles when and how hard) You don't naturally move a bar in a straight line up and down when benching or squatting, the smith can force your body into unnatural positions that can be potentially dangerous for joints. There are exceptions, but personally, I don't touch the things.
