Matt back from the Hospital.....

Hey there everyone!

Just wanted to let you know that I am still alive. I have been in and out of the hospital several times in the last few months and haven't been on the forum as much as I would have liked. I just got out of the hospital and wanted to check in and let everyone know what exactly is going on with me.

I have an extreme form of Gastroparesis that causes many bad things. This past week my nausea and vomiting got so bad that it caused tears which bled into my stomach. For almost 3 days they flushed blood out of my stomach through a tube in my nose. One liter of cold water in.....and then a liter and a half of water & blood would come out in this canister that I could see. They changed that sucker a lot!

Pain is unreal too. I'm on about 12 different drugs right now to try and control nausea, vomiting and pain. Blood sugar too as I am Diabetic and that is at the heart of everything that ails me for sure.

Before I came to All The Whey I was about 330 lbs. Real fat bloated sucker! I got down to around 275 but in just the past 3 months with being sick I'm down to 212 and I mean in a real bad way. Good to lose weight, very bad way to do it.

The doctors want to surgically implant a gastric pacemaker to do the job my stomach has stopped doing. That scares the crap out of me. Right now I'm on a part liquid diet and everything solid has to be puréed like baby food. Sucks.

Anyhow, in the past few months it seems that every week or so I have an attack severe enough to send me to the hospital and take me out of action. I've stopped by the forum when I'm not in the hospital and I want to thank everyone for their support while I struggle through this illness. Using the "matt05" code and putting "Matt" in the comments section of your order literally paid for my prescriptions when I got out of the hospital today. You guys are my lifeline! You can still email me and I will answer, PM's work too same as always if you ever need anything, just forgive me if my response is delayed.

I'll check in again soon.

Matt

I've been in the hospital so many times I know all the RN's and Doctor's names by heart.

How are you treating it with that patient of yours?

Hey Matt,

That sounds absolutely HORRIBLE. I can only imagine what you are feeling when they say they want to implant that machine inside you. Pretty scary stuff.

Very sorry to hear this ongoing problem. Will pray for you, hope you have some good people to be there with you.

Thats terrible to feel so bad all the time! I hope they find the thing that works for you so you can get better!

Hey Matt, relax and get well soon buddy. Everyone at AM will be thinking, praying and pulling for you my friend.:)

Oh Matt, very sorry to hear you're having to deal with this. Hope you get better soon.

My wife and I sympathize. She's been in the hospital 3x this year from ulcerative colitis complications. Though it's been pretty awful she's getting much better as I am sure you will. It takes time.

One of the most common causes of gastroparesis is a complication brought on by diabetes(many believe it's caused due to diabetic neuropathy of the stomach wall or vagus nerve.) However there are many other factors that can cause it(botched gastric surgery and certain medications being a few). For those that don't know what gastroparesis is, it's actually paralysis of peristaltic movements(stomach contractions) in the stomach which inhibits gastric emptying of food(so basically it just sits in your stomach.) There are a few different ways to treat it medically. The most common being the use of metocloparamide(Reglan). It acts on dopamine receptors in the stomach and intestine walls and can stimulate peristaltic contractions thus improving gastric emptying....not to mention reglan is a very commonly used antiemetic(for nausea and vomiting) which acts on the vomiting reflex in the brain. They probably will want to put you on a special diet that has foods with a short gastric emptying time to decrease symptoms of bloating, and nausea/vomiting.

I've heard of the surgery you mentioned and i know of a few success stories. It involves attaching electrodes to the stomach lining that help stimulate peristaltic contractions thus enhancing gastric emptying. Usually they will try to treat it medically first with some meds and a specific diet , but if that doesn't work surgery is always a good option to help alleviate symptoms. I wish you the best my friend and you you will get through this just fine.

Get well soon. Sounds pretty bad. I wouldn't want to be on an all liquid diet. In your case its what you have to do. It just makes me wonder why some people want to drink all their food when they actually don't have a problem like you. There was a thread a few days ago about a guy wanting to blend his food up and drink it. He wasn't in the hospital or anything either....

That's what I do, blend all kinds off food up. Most I don't liquify, just puree' and eat with a fork or a spoon.
