Hehehe. I agree. But seriously, how was the movie story and effects wise? I put this one on my list to see 'cuz it was done by Speilberg.

I also remember watching the old saturday afternoon movie narrated by Orson Wells countless times. I just figured it would be intresting to see a modern day high budget version of the classic.

You know what - it was really really good. Scary as heck, but not terribly gruesome, which was a nice change. I was on the edge of my seat the last hour and Tim Robbins is excellent as a man gone mad.

My son (10 years old) really liked it and seemed to understand that it was not going to really happen....but it did make us both look up at the sky a lot tonight.

Enjoy it...........

I realy liked it & so did my daughter
more a re-adaptation of the book than a remake of the Ray Harryhausen movie w/ Gene Barry, and MUCH MUCH better than that movie.

Cruise continues to work really hard at his craft, bless his heart, but is usually too shallow to make much of an impression, but he has good moments in this one.

The little girl is *terrific*.

The problem w/ the ending is, it's the point of the book, and while provoking when new, it's just boring now.

still, it's one hell of a ride - the best special effects yet, and thin as it is in places, this is Cruise' best work so far. Tim Robbins practically steals the movie in his one scene. Go see it!

agreed on the ending. I didnt want to say it was the same ending as the book in case readers were planning on seeing it

I live where the film was shot, so it was sorta creepy walking out of the theater and wondering why everything was still standing.... they did a very good job on reproducing Bayonne. It was nice to see my state take a beating for once..

i actually didn't mind tim being in the movie.. it helped carry tom ( yeah i call them tim and tom.. ya know) but anyway... i have to disagree when he got all political and said that the visitors would never beat us because history proves you cannot win by [size=-1]occupying a country that isn't ours. We still are in germany and japan from world war 2, and we still have this country... the native americans have yet to take it back....

or should I just shut up and enjoy the movie for what it was:think:

I may go to see this movie only because I really enjoyed War of the Worlds: The Series back on syndicated television in 1988-'89. The first season of that show was excellent. It picked up 35 years after the original movie ended, and focused on how the world had forgotten about the alien invasion. When the aliens, placed in a form of suspended animation by earth's bacteria, start coming back to life when exposed to radiation, they also have the ability to take over human bodies. Violent and well-written. Anyone else remember this?

As far as H.G. Wells, while he was a good writer, I disagree with his political and social viewpoints.

definitly a so-so movie. the special effects are great and i guess the movie keeps you on the edge of your seat. i never read the book, but the whole premise of the movie doesnt make any sense (i wont ruin it), and the ending is terrible and confusing. there isnt much substance to the movie and after seeing the whole thing it doesnt seem like much happened from the time they come to the end. the whole background story wasnt too original either. i guess theres nothing wrong with seeing it just for the special effects and to see how crazy tom is (i dont think he had to act that much in the movie...) and also there were some good previews (Narnia looks real good). just what i thought...

Yeah, I've read the reviews, and the most have the same criticism as the others, the ending is mostly the same as the book. For most movies that is a plus, apparently most feel the book,as the movie, falls short in the end. I, myself, found it all a little too simplistic, but then consider when it was written and what was going on at the time and then reconsider the brilliance. Beyond his time, but done many times before ours.

Well-said! Done right this time, arguably - certainly more in keeping w/ Wells' imagination than the George Pal/Ray Harryhausen - but still antique.

Saw it last night, and actually going with my family this evening to see it again. Tim robbins was awesome, and that little girl has a big acting future ahead of her. Excellent.

I agree.  from me.

The special effects were killer, and I can aprectate the ending. I'm glad it stuck true to the book. My only complaint, like others have stated, is that the story line could have used more substance. Oh, and as cool as the scene with Tom and the grenades was, it also came off as a little cheezy.

Worth the price of admission though.

i heard it was bad from a few people. plus toms retarded stance on "drugs" is just not making me want to give him any money.

lol you know whats hilarious about that scene when they are stuck on the alien tripod in the cage? Everyone groups together to save tom cruise from being killed. However just 15 seconds before, they all sat back and let the aliens snag up and kill some other schmoe. Kind of funny.
