If you could only get one supplement, what would it be?

I'm bulking right now. I've done everything natural and I don't want anything that would keep me from that. I'm seriously thinking of trying musclemilk.

It seems as though you've never supplemented before...

In that case...Whey and Creatine would be your best friends.

If it had to be one man, its a no brainer ---> A very good whey protein. I really like Dymatize - all things considered (taste, bcaa's, and overall just being a really sound protein), this has worked the best for me. Hope this helped!

I consider whey a part of my diet. That being said, if I could only pick one supp it would be Cissus because I am an old man with injuries that plague. If I wasn't, it would be Anabolic Pump for sure.

USPLabs Direct - Anabolic Pump for more info.

PumpingIron - nope, never tried any supplements ever.

What about apex Max Whey? Do you think that's a good whey protein?

I don't know, Anabolic Pump doesn't sound very safe. I don't think I want to mess with my hormones like that...

What does creatine do exactly? I heard it may get rid of some fat and then add water to your muscle. How will adding water help you reach your goals? and what happens when you get off of it?

Optimum Nutrition's whey protein is good, as well as Anabolic Innovations whey protein, and also Dymatize Elite whey protein are all good choices for protein powders.

As far as creatine goes, there are many different types available now(mono, micronized, ester, ethlys, kre-alkaline, etc.)

Creatine helps pull water inot the muscle fibers and expands them. Along with water being pulled in, nutrients are all pulled in as well. Creatine adds strength and size. Not everyone responds to mono-creatine, so others have been developed to absorb differently into the body.

I personally respond better to good ole' Mono or micronized creatine. I tried the others and haven't had as good of results. Others swear by them though. Everyone responds differently to certain things.

Since you are new to the whole supplement thing and are trying to bulk. I would first suggest to get you diet down first and be consistant with that. If you are not eating right, then all the supplements in the world are not going to help you or not to there full potential anyways.
What are your stats? What does your diet look like?

Whey protein, creatine and a multi are the ones that are the most important. For an edge, I shall recommend X-Factor. Yes I am a rep, but see for yourself the results people get, and the reputation this product has. There are a lot of other products as well, so please ask for more info if you aren't sure ;)

nvr2loud - I'm 24, male, about 5'8" and I currently weigh about 158. I started working out and bulking as a complete beginner about 8 months ago and I used to weigh 135. I've been putting on some muscle as well as getting fat. I'm not sure which one is winning so far the fat or muscle... My diet is pretty erratic but it's been more consistent recently. I'm thinking maybe I should start cutting and then bulk again.

My Resting Metabolic Rate is about 2800 and my total metabolic rate is about 4200. So I should be getting about 5200 to bulk, does that sound right? I'm not sure if I'm getting that in my "diets."

Lately my diet has been consisting of:

1 cup oatmeal in the morning with 1 cup of 2% fat milk and a banana.

2-3 hours later, a sandwich of some kind. Usually 2 slices of whole wheat bread with cold turkey slices, cheese, lettuce, sometimes tomatoes.

2-3 hours later a subway club sandwich with no mao.

2-3 hours later a can of tuna with a glass of 2% fat milk.

Then it all goes down hill from and I eat something like a chicken bake for dinner or something I can just pop in the microwave.

A chicken bake has 43g protein, 22g fat, 6 sat. fat, 45mg cholest., 1500mg sodium, 55g total carbs, 5g fiber, 4g sugar, and they are soooo good...

And in between all of those I'll ocasionally try to have some almonds, cottage cheese, and peaches and sometimes a power bar.
Lately I've been eating a lot of junk food cause of the holidays. And then when I'm hanging out with my people, then we sometimes go get dell taco or something.

If I'm working, I'll have a fried chicken breast every two hours or chicken strips.

I have not done any cardio until recently. Now after every workout, I run for about half a mile as a cool-down. I usually work out 3 days a week with a day or two of rest in between.

Why is whey protein better than other proteins?

jjohn - do you mean multi as in multi vitamins?
What kind of vitamins do you think I will need?

How long has creatine been tested? Are there any side effects.

Chicken breasts are one of the best source of protein out there. Try not to have too much sodium if possible. PowerBars, you could get rid of those, they aren't very good.

Whey is better, because you get a higher insulin response as it's digested faster than the other ones.

Multivitamins are very important, and you should get one. ADAM by NOW or Daily Vits are both good vitamins.

I won't waste time explaining what creatine does. It's been tested, again and again, and proven to be safe and effective. The only side from creatine mono is bloating and water retention. Take some Creatine Ethyl Ester, or Kre-Alkalyn, or CGluconate.

Hope this helps a bit..

Smokepaladin, maybe that's why i'm getting fat? probably too many calories.

It looks like Cissus RX has been discontinued...

So why do so many people recomend musclemilk all the time?

Musclemilk is pretty high in calories, and I never recommended it, as I gain fat very easily. Those who have a very fast metabolism will benefit from it, but not people like us. If you gain fat easily, diet should be super clean if you want to stay lean year long.

Oh yeah, and Cissus will be back, don't worry. Just don't mix Cissus with XF if this is your choice..

Why no Arachidonic Acid with Cissus?
This was posted in a thread "Cissus and X-Factor"

Ethnopharmacol. 2006 Sep 26;: [Pubmed] [Scholar] [Select] [Drop] [Hide] [Show]
Analgesic, anti-inflammatory and venotonic effects of Cissus quadrangularis Linn.
Ampai Panthong, Wanicha Supraditaporn, Duangta Kanjanapothi, Tawat Taesotikul, Vichai Reutrakul
Cissus quadrangularis, a medicinal plant indigenous to Asia and Africa, is used for many ailments, especially for the treatment of hemorrhoid. The effects associated with hemorrhoid, i.e. analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities as well as the venotonic effect of the methanol extract of C. quadrangularis (CQ) were assessed in comparison with reference drugs. In the analgesic test, CQ provoked a significant reduction of the number of writhes in acetic acid-induced writhing response in mice. CQ also significantly reduced the licking time in both phases of the formalin test. The results suggest peripheral and central analgesic activity of CQ. In acute phase of inflammation CQ elicited the inhibitory effect on the edema formation of the rats' ear induced by ethyl phenylpropiolate as well as on the formation of the paw edema in rats induced by both carrageenin and arachidonic acid. It is likely that CQ is a dual inhibitor of arachidonic acid metabolism. In addition, CQ exerted venotonic effect on isolated human umbilical vein similarly to the mixture of bioflavonoids, i.e. 90% diosmin and 10% hesperidin. The results obtained confirmed the traditional use of C. quadrangularis for the treatment of pain and inflammation associated with hemorrhoid as well as reducing the size of hemorrhoids.

I would not say Whey if you were only going with one (instead just get all protein from whole foods), I would say creatine for sure. But for me Whey, Creatine and Multi are just part of my regular diet. So for just one supplement that you can use year round I would say Cissus Rx.
