I just want to start off by saying I'm not universally characterizing this entire group of people. I realize that each individual is just that, so keep in mind this is about a very specific set of people based on their individual choices.
I was in seminar today for a lecture called 4P37 Race and Racism which discusses the fallacies of Race. Part of the course curric., is tying in contemporary 'racial' fallacies with their philosophical underpinning i.e., patriarchy, religion, and, in this case, speciesism.
Anyway, this gloating, obese, and overbearing Vegan was leading the discussion today and spent one hour universally characterizing EVERY person whom eats meat as morally wrong. She made the direct comparison that every person whom eats meat is THE EXACT SAME (her words) as Michael Vick. She was making this comparison in reference to factory farming methods (which are disgusting, btw), and made the allusion that we can actively choose where our meat comes from.
Now, in principle, I agreed with most of what she was propagating; however, she was being a completely ignorant douchebag about it, and this is why:
She gave this entire presentation about inhumanity and cruelty to animals on an APPLE computer, wearing clothes which were made in Indonesia and China!!
This is the type of smug, pretentious vegan/environmentalist/whatever-ist that I despise. The most tragic part about this, is that I literally agree with almost everything these people have to say. I do think our current farming methods reveal quite a bit about inequities in society, I do think racism is still prevalent, I do think we have an environmental crisis. However, when you are a complete and utter smug fvcking hypocritical douchebag about it, it takes some of the resonance away from your argument.
Anyway, when I pointed this out to her, she had literally no reply aside from "Well, this isn't what we're discussing so I am going to continue". So I cut her off and said, "You made the comparison that each person whom eats meat is the EXACT SAME as Michael Vick. With that line of reasoning, I can confidently say YOU are the EXACT SAME as the Taiwanese Crew Chief denying the person who made your computer food, water, shelter, and adequate pay". When she denied this I began to flip out literally, at which point the TA stopped the argument before it got out of hand.
So, I'd like to pass out a resounding FVCK YOU to pretentious douchebags like this girl.
