What kind of doctor understands men's fitness?

My primary care physician says that weightlifting is isometric and burns fewer calories than cardio, therefore to be healthy I should do cardio.

He says that BMI is a fine indicator of health. He doesn't care about lean body mass versus body fat %.

I guess he wants me to be a twig. I don't get it.

I'd like to find a smarter PCP. I already found Dr. John but his office is rather far for quarterly visits. What kind of doctor should I look for that understands men's fitness?

BTW, who the heck cares about BMI? That is what mirrors are for.
Wow. I think that's the first time I've actually heard a doctor say that. At one point, I got my BMI down to the exact place where it should be and everyone told me I looked way too skinny. I agreed when I looked in the mirror, but tried to convince myself otherwise. My BMI says that I'm a little overweight, but I look way better than when it was exactly where it should it. If I asked my wife if I should lose 10 lbs, she would tell me "No". My primary care physician would prescribe adipex in heartbeat if I asked him to, but I am not interested now.

My primary is a moron. I go for the bloodwork and decipher the results myself.

Last physical my BMI was just borderline to overweight while having a visible eight pack and striations in my delts. LMFAO

I wound up finding a holistic/naturopath D.O. She is willing to set up all the different bllod workups and other tests that are listed on our threads. So far she has identified several nutritional and hormonal deffienciesnad put me on a low dose of Androderm. I also get assigned readings and suggestions on alternative therapies.

My primary was not familiar with andropause or male aging/fitness issues. She also didn't have any recimmendations as far as who else to see so I had to ask around. Went to a urologist and that turned into another waste of time and $$.

My wife is a RN/BSN and holistic practioner and had heard of the D.O I am seeing now. The only issue with this is that she prefers to work with women and considers herself a "cunsultatnt" not a primary care. So I am increasing the number of health care professionals I see instread of combining.

But at least as I have said in a couple of other threads..I finally moving in some direction.

I checked with local pharmacists, asked my primary for referals, called a couple of endos and uros, lloked on the various web sites and the threads as far as trying to find someone close. I was at the point that i was going to go with one of the more reputable online groups and I may still wind up going that way if this D.O. doesn't get me to the levels of health I am looking for (I know it isn't like taking a car in for repairs).

...

I'm a student nurse on hiatus. My goal was Nurse Practitioner, but maybe I should go and be holistic D.O. myself. Dr. John can't have all the fun!!!!!

It makes me really angry when doctors assume I don't know my extensor digitorum longus from an emesis basin. I had to contain my laughter in front of this M.D. He clearly isn't used to patients knowing more than him.

I need a local PCP that can squat at least his/her own bodyweight, ATG. Perhaps is time to move to Lansing. Does it get as cold there as it does here in Minneapolis? ;)

Thanks for all the responses. Huntin' season has begun.

Holy poop batman - I never noticed Dr. John was in Lansing - my search has come to an end. Where are you located ? I will be calling your office right away.

I need a a D.O. that understands idiopathic secondary hypogonadism, insulin resistance and Westside Barbell? Asking too much???

I plan to call my insurance company and ask them how I can at least get a list of D.O.'s and start there.

You have to have responsibility for asking questions regarding what is bothering you and what you want to accomplish (healthwise). You need to keep asking because a lot of times they don't hear you or are focused on another issue. You also need to ask them if they are up to date in the areas of your concerns at least my PCP was honest enough to listen and admit I would need to take my questions to someone who specializes in the HRT/Andropause/Male Health area. I will still be seeing her as my PCP but have added others to my health package.

At least you can find your BMI, for my height, my BMI is off the chart. Yet, for my size, the BP and cholesterol are in good shape. Granted I need to do more cardio anyway, but still... :)

Dr. John,

I have been through three doctors and am on the fourth. After testing at 224 and then 319 total T, I finally got the current one to begin TRT. 5g AndroGel for five weeks (couldn't get them to test at recommended 2 weeks) and then I tested at 161 with my butt dragging. They (doc and nurse practitioner - haven't even met the doc yet) changed it to 10g AndroGel and I feel about like I did before starting treatment.

To skip the rest of the details, how can I approach the doc about working with you via phone? I am concerned that ego or whatever is going to cause them to have the initial reaction that they don't need any outside doc help, because they already know what they are doing. What approach have you found succesful in getting involved this way?

Phil put me onto you and this forum by the way. He's something isn't he?

Thanks!

Dave

I got tested after being on the 10g AndroGel for a couple of weeks and it came back at 331. This explains why I feel about like I did before starting the gel (319 total T before treatment).

I had an MRI done and it came back negative.

My doc says that he doesn't like shots because of the spiking. Here is a quote from his nurse practitioner - "Remember, that the injections would would most likely lead to a spiking effect with a downward trend until the next injection".

I don't think that they are up on the latest for injections and I would really be surprised if they would be up to speed on using HCG. They have not mentioned AIs or even that E2 can be a problem, nor did they have E2 or anything besides total T tested on follow up to the start of AG.

I'm wondering more about my cortisol result from before starting AG that came in at 9.9 (range 8.9 - 22.4).

Thanks for the reply Dr. John!

I have my appointment Thursday the 12th to discuss my treatment. It will be the first time for me to meet the doc. All dealings to date have been through the nurse practitioner.

I will certainly bring up the weekly injections and the supplement of HCG per your update on the recipe. If I don't get a result from that appointment that has me feeling better, I intend to seek other help.

I am over 400 miles from your office. Would you be able to treat me and only "see me" once a year? If I had to come up for a few appointments at the beginning, that would be OK.

If this post is inappropriate, feel free to remove it.

Thanks for your help Dr. John!!

Email him at his practice (see allthingsmale dot com) and you'll be happy how easy it is to receive TRT under his care, legally and effectively.
