Hola AM Familia!

I am moving to Mexico City for 3 weeks for TEFL training, and then to Costa Rica for a year. I have a few questions and would love some ideas.

1) Any suggestions on how to stay GI tract healthy while needing to consume dubious amounts of water and food that I am concerned mildly about. (Flora and fauna etc...)

2) Does anyone have any idea how much protein powders will run while I am down there? There are GNC's, so I know they get quality stuff as a last resort, and ideas of websites for normal supps? I hate to travel with kilos of unmarked powders... know what I mean?

3) Any suggestions of gyms near Heredia? (Near San Jose) Also are CR pharmacies as liberal as Mexicos? Should I stock up on my "Personal Needs?"

4) Any suggestions on where the cool parks, fishing spots are, I'll mail ya some fish!!

I'll be posting pics throughout the year, I am 6"3.5 ft and 221 lbs right now. I doubt those numbers will remain though...

Hehehe. (Maybe the height will stay the same though :) )

I look foward to sharing some adventures with you fellas and gals. If you have any survivial tips--- I'd like them NOW!!!!

In health,

M-

Awesome. I am coming to live with you whether you like it or not. lol

From what I hear, they are somewhat tight about their drugs, but this is secondhand info..never been there.

For fishing..ppfft, sounds like just about everywhere away from a city is good. Pacific side, invest in some heavier gear for Cubera snapper, rooster fish, jacks and grouper inshore. Offshore, it's one of the best sailfish and yellowfin tuna fisheries in the world..look into Isla Coiba. Atlantic side..it's all about tarpon baby! Either side have dolphin/dorado.

Been trying to plan a fishing trip there if you couldn't tell. lol

I have heard good things about the grapefruit seed. You may also want to consider taking or making some colloidal silver. It is offered commercially down there and many ex-pats and locals in Mexico use it to disinfect veggies and water. I don't know what brand it goes by down there.

I wrote this last night, and it was stiff frozen on my screen this morning:

Regarding #1, I have 1 word for you--CIPRO!

(Yes, this is the stuff they give people who have been exposed to Anthrax).

First time I went to S.America I went to my university clinic before departing. Turned out the RN had spent years living in the country I was headed to. She gave me a bunch of Cipro, and some anti-diarrhea medicine. She said to take it at the first sign, and follow the dosage (I think it was 1x5days).

So I inevitably became ill. I was in denial and assumed that it was going to pass (really, I was hiding the fact b/c I didn't want to face a veritable sh1t storm at my wife's (then it was pre-fiance) house. I was sick for probably 12 hours before I took anything. After beginning the meds I was about 75% better within 1 day. 48 hours after beginning the meds I felt 100% recuperated. I was incredibly sick when it first hit. When the sickness really kicked in I couldn't walk. I literally had to crawl to the toilet.

2nd trip: I was chomping on some alpaca (llama family, very tasty :food:), and halfway through the meal I realized it was medium-rare. Not good! The next morning I was at the airport flying from one city to another. I started feeling a bit dizzy, but very minimal. My stomach was starting to hurt. I took the cipro immediately, along with the anti-diarrhea med. I felt weak and tired for about 12 hours, and my stomach was just a little bit off. No big deal, and I was back at 100% within the day.

Moral of the story is: listen to your body and respond accordingly. Many people deny the sickness is hitting, and they fail to do anything about it once it hits. These microbes are ruthless (as if they're capable of comprehending ruthlessness), so you need to take major precautions. I know a lot of people who spent 1-2 weeks in bed. They never sought an antibiotic.

You should be able to buy cipro (ciproxina down there) at any pharmacy. I don't know how bad the contamination is in Costa Rica, but a few bouts of food bourne illness could definitely set you back some lbs.

Obviously you don't want to go chomping on some heavy anti-biotics all the time. Be careful about what you eat. Costa Rica is probably better than every other country in Latin America, so the risk might be lower, but there is still definitely a risk. Think of cipro as nolva: don't start your cycle/voyage without it. I'd buy it asap, b/c if you're really sick you might not have the strength to go out and get it.

My buddy from Costa Rica just left my place. I'll ask him about fishing, etc., but you're on your own for the other stuff. I don't talk about that stuff with anyone ;)

I have to look it up, but I have a great Spanish book that gets into unique tense usage and has hundreds of expressions. If you're interested, let me know and I'll look it up for you.

Que te vaya bien, huevon ;)

Oh yeah, BTW, if C.R. is anything like where I've been, supplements will be ASTRONOMICALLY expensive. I think I recall either a 2.5 or a 5lb jug of ON Whey going for $60. Definitely buy through Crowler. Even with the shipping charges it'll still be worth it.

I'm guessing your biggest challenge will be getting 5-6 meals a day down there. What will your living situation be like? Host family? If so, it'll be very hard to get food prepared as often as you want, and exactly how you want it. If you have your own place, you might be able to hire an empleada to do all your cooking and cleaning. If so, she'll make what you want how you want it. In most of Latin America the empleadas only make $1-2/day, so this could be an affordable possibility if you have your own place.

Hmmm, that sounds kinda like AM :bb2:

Priority #1, dude, get the Cipro. All bodybuilding goals are out the window if you keep getting sick. Stay sick for 2-3 days and you can kiss at least 10lbs good bye.

Did I mention I'm jealous, you #&$* :bruce1:

Acidophilus (sp?) is essential to GI health, even more when you take anti-biotics because they will also kill your friendly bacteria which acidophilus helps replenish. Good luck with the trip, man I need a freakin vacation. Bobo may have a spare room for you in his mansion :D

My friend from Costa Rica was over again tonight. I didn't ask any specifics, but he said cops don't bother anyone for drugs that don't harm others. As for acquistion, I have no clue.

He also mentioned a couple of good clubs: La Cueva (The Cave) in San Jose, which is actually a cave; and El Rancho, which is just outside the city. Not that you'd be interested, but prostitution is legal, and available in most bars/clubs. Definitely signs of a free society, so this may apply to other things as well (cough, cough ;) ).

He also said that food/water contamination isn't nearly as bad as it is in other parts of Latin America. Don't drink the h2o in San Jose, but outside the city you should be fine. I'd still go with bottled just to be safe, but at least that means less danger from veggies, etc that have been washed.

Well i know a couple places i wanna visit for the gear, Thailand and Egypt being 2 of them, but even now that Mexico has had a bunch of shut downs with the vet companies, you can still get human grade gear and order gear from the internet LEGALLY so you could order a nice big stash and not have to worry about going to jail. What i think is bull is that in Mexico Bush went over there and got them to shut down Denkall, Animal Max, Quality Vet etc and now Mexico is going to be more lax on ppl possessing recreational drugs like cocaine and heroin, doesn't something sound a little fishy their? I think America and alot of other countries profit from the whole world drug trade, kinda like Bush going to Iraq just for the oil.

Thanks Amigo!

I really appreciate your insight, you have asked some good questions. Hopefully I'll marry my girl but there are at least replacements available quickly. And you are right, legal prostitution usually implies a freer society. :)

Thanks for the heads up on the clubs. I have been to a few in my life that BLEW my mind and a cave was one of them. So I will offer my finest spelunking(SP).

Good to know about the foodstuffs, I am actually more concerned about how I will achive my k/cal than my, um medications. :) God bless Mexico.

Thanks Beowulf. I may need an addy from you so I can mail you a postcard. ;)

Yeah Motivator DO NOT buy any protein or supps from Mexico, they are rediculously expensive, use Crowler. Cipro is best, and being in Mexico, you do not need perscriptions for any antibiotics, viagra, or anything else, PM me on the gey area stuff, I wish I had of known what I know now... Anywhoo have fun, and stay with bottle water, it is safe, and stay away from ICE, even in alcoholic drinks.

Cool, I'd definitely love to hear how Costa Rica treats you. I will probably be headed down with my wife, our friend, and his fiancee, but it probably won't happen for about 2 years.

Will you be signing into AM periodically when down there?
