Why so much controversy over DMSO?

Everything I have read about DMSO in medical journals describes numerous, almost miraculous, medical properties.

Why then does DMSO have such a "voodoo" stigma and is still only approved for use as a "cleaning solvent"?

because they're idiots. and some of the more knowledgeable bros may have a better handle on this than i do but i think chemo is about the only one who has dmso in the base (or at least gives the option for homebrews.) and you are right its good stuff. but dont let the word get out too well or the fda will try and ban it too.

It just can't be used for medicinal reason or for consumption and everything else. It is very good for cleaning up spill though... Talk to ya...

From what ive read there was some tests on animals (rabbits i believe) and the dmso led to cataracts or some other eye problems, but it has never been show n to do it in humans

Pobably because of reports like this.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Multidisciplinary utilization of dimethyl sulfoxide: pharmacological, cellular, and molecular aspects.

    Santos NC, Figueira-Coelho J, Martins-Silva J, Saldanha C.

Instituto de Bioqui;mica/Instituto de Medicina Molecular, Faculdade de Medicina de Lisboa, Av. Prof. Egas Moniz, P-1649-028, Lisboa, Portugal

DMSO is an amphipathic molecule with a highly polar domain and two apolar methyl groups, making it soluble in both aqueous and organic media. It is one of the most common solvents for the in vivo administration of several water-insoluble substances. Despite being frequently used as a solvent in biological studies and as a vehicle for drug therapy, the side-effects of DMSO (undesirable for these purposes) are apparent from its utilization in the laboratory (both in vivo and in vitro) and in clinical settings. DMSO is a hydrogen-bound disrupter, cell-differentiating agent, hydroxyl radical scavenger, intercellular electrical uncoupler, intracellular low-density lipoprotein-derived cholesterol mobilizing agent, cryoprotectant, solubilizing agent used in sample preparation for electron microscopy, antidote to the extravasation of vesicant anticancer agents, and topical analgesic. Additionally, it is used in the treatment of brain edema, amyloidosis, interstitial cystitis, and schizophrenia. Several systemic side-effects from the use of DMSO have been reported, namely nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hemolysis, rashes, renal failure, hypertension, bradycardia, heart block, pulmonary edema, cardiac arrest, and bronchospasm. Looking at the multitude of effects of DMSO brought to light by these studies, it is easily understood how many researchers working with DMSO (or studying one of its specific effects) might not be fully aware of the experiences of other groups who are working with it but in a different context.

Yes, I read that report.  Unfortunately it's vague and doesn't say what dosage caused these side effects.  I read an article about a girl who had a toxic reaction.  Turns out she applied 1/2 a bottle (4oz) at once!  Take 1/2 bottle of aspirin and see what happens!

What's frustrating is that there are 100s of other reports saying it's harmless and cures everything from bruises to cancer.

Just don't understand it.  Science or ???

Havenít worked with the stuff for a while but there is nothing really bad about DMSO by itself. Iíve actually been wondering why no one uses it for a co solvent. At low percentage or mixed with a little water I wouldnít think it would (Iím still wet behind the ears) hurt. It can however make things much if you mix it with anything even mildly toxic; the transdermal properties take the absorption rate thru the roof. This is ware the stigma comes from. This everyone in the industrial sectors came to associate DMSO with being dangerous. For instance DMSO can be a far better coalescing solvent then texonal (seen 10 PHR DMSO used instead of 38 PHR of ester alcohol) but after adding the DMSO the health hazard rate can go from a 1 to a 3, big difference. It is also great in phenyl formaldehyde resins (great viscosity reductions, water miscible, high boiling point, and low reactivity in most reaction) but turned them deadly. Formaldehyde / DMSO is horribly toxic, corrosive and irritating. Itís right up there with floric acid. Be aware that when using DMSO like that your not just getting you PH in, but anything else that the DMSO has picked up as well.
