<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN-LEFT: 0.25in"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt">The three components of energy expenditure are Resting energy expenditure, the thermic effect of food, and energy expended in physical activity.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>The resting energy expenditure is most of the bodies’ energy expenditure.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>This is energy that is needed to remain alive and healthy.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>It includes respiration and circulation, the synthesis of organic compounds, the pumping of the ions across membranes, the energy consumed by the central nervous system and the maintenance of body tempature.Of these 29% is used by the liver involved in the synthesis of glucose and ketones for the brain’s fuel.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>Next is the thermic effect of food.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>This is about 10% of the total energy expended by the body.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>It is the energy needed to break down the food particles and convert them into usable energy for the body.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>This can be affected by both spicy foods or caffeine, these would effect it in a positive manner.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>The effect is typically after food consumption.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>The greater is after protein and carbs with less energy used to store fat.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>Finally there is the energy expended in exercise.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>It is the most widely variable of them all.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>It can be as much as 10% or 50% depending on the activity level for each individual.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>This can be from both voluntary as well as involuntary factors ie shivering, fidgeting and postural control.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>This also has a big difference in different individuals because of size and the efficiency of the individual’s motions.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>All in all the three factors add up to the total energy expenditure.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>All these as said before play a key role with EEPA being the most variable of the three.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  With this in mind the best way to loose weight and change ones EEPA is to exersise more.  All these factors go into account when figuring out your daily intake of Calories. Not that these should make a difference in your thinking but do know that spicey foods can increase the thermic effects of food for up to 4 hrs were a typical food aonly has up to 2 hrs in the effect.  Another thing for dieting for bulking or loosing is that when you change your habits ie workout more or are in more physical activity you must increase the Caloric intake if you are gaining weight or if you want to loose this is why you need not crash diet for too long because the raise in energy expendature with extra cardio can play effects on your overall total energy expenditure.  Again you dont want to completely freek you system out because it will learn to fix the problem, you need to adjust in timely manners.  All of this is of coarse with out the help of altering drugs ie usnic acid, DNP, or T3 these come into a totaly different catagory. Just remember to relate the totals that you come up with on a total calories needed to your chnging factors as they are stated above.</SPAN></SPAN>

I know about shivering...man, thats the only shitty part about being a lifeguard...sometimes its COLD!!!
