    5/3/1 BBB question about deloads

Trying out 5/3/1 to prep for my first Push/pull. Just wondering if on the deload weeks should I be reducing the weight or work on the BBB portion or on the assistance lifts? Or just the strength lifts?

Unrelated question. I'm signing up for meet and on the form it asks which weight class I intend to compete at. I'm right on the cusp, what happens if I sign up for 198 nut show up lighter?

For a deload, you deload everything. If you're using 5/3/1 to prepare for a meet, I would strongly recommend buying Wendlers 5/3/1 for Powerlifting where he specifically tells you how to better utilize 5/3/1 in preparation for a meet. It costs only $20 from his website to be able to download onto your computer or phone online.

As for your weight class question, I do not know. Other members here will be able to answer though. Emailing the meets point of contact and asking them wouldn't hurt.

    Good luck

Thanks. I got the book, but it doesn't say much about BBB. Could be an older edition.

Which book do you have? If its his 1st or 2nd edition- he doesn't bring up powerlifting specific training. His seperate book- 5/3/1 for Powerlifting- is all powerlifting and competition specific, and does not talk about BBB, because you would not use the BBB template.

The latter. Were you suggesting I pickup a different one?

I would suggest following what Wendler details in his Powerlifting book since he is both bigger and smarter than the two of us. 5/3/1 how it's written in his original books will not have you ready and primed for a 1RM because you are not working in your higher % weight ranges.

I'm in the same boat as you are. Right now I am following the "non competitive powerlifter" template as it allows me to work in heavy singles up to my estimated 95% 1RM on Week 1&3 and my assistance lifts will be targeted to assist my weaknesses and for strengthening. When I'm closer to my meet I will use his "pre-competition" template.

If you take a peek in my log, you will see an experienced member (Rodja) giving me advice to the same questions you're asking here. I'm only repeating what he's told me, and from what I've read in Wendlers book and on his website.

I like the idea of BBB. But maybe I need to put bodybuilding on the back burner until after the meet. Thanks for the input. Got a link to your log, I'll read through it.

I'm not saying everything I'm doing is 100% right, but at least you can read some of the advice given to me since we are under similar scenarios

I never deload on the assistance lifts as they're not what really taxes the CNS.

It's an endorsement and have zero issue with someone doing so.

Gotcha, so go down to 50-60% on the main lifts, but keep the assistance up. Makes sense.

If you're doing the BBB template, you essentially just skip the primary movement and do the assistance work.

I know how you feel. Mine is months away and I'm nervous and don't know what to expect. It sets a personal goal and a meaning to getting stronger, and that's what counts for me. Good luck

I just want experience. There's zero chance of winning, I got a long road ahead lol. But if I'm able to add the 10/5 lbs a week, I should be able to push a 315 and pull a 455. Which in my book is incredible. Good puck on yours as well!

There's an app called big lifts that will calculate it for you, and track it. Also has on option to choose lighter or powerlifting.
