Weight training and Fibromyalgia
To keep the story short a good female friend of mine has been diagnosed with fibro. She's overweight and wants to get into shape, so i suggested weight training as the best possible way to go about it.
she's totally against it because she read somewhere that fibro sufferers should only use stretchy bands to keep the "joint-jarring motion" of lifting weights to a minimum.
i think the whole thing is absolute bull****, and if your using the right weight, you wont be hurting your joints.
Anyways, anybody out there have some insight? Im satisfied in my knowledge of exercise science to provide her with a program and pseudo-training partner, but I know little about fibro and less still about fibro and weight training.

i have a close friend and training partner who has fibro., and he is also a 9 time world record holding powerlifter. he told me a while back that the heavier he lifts the better he feels, and when he doesn't lift he just hurts all the time. don't know if that will help get your friend to get into weight training, but right there is somebody with fibro who lifts and uses it as therapy.

I agree with you on that. Hell, after I convince her that weights arent going to bug her fibro, Im going to have to figure out how to tell her that salad and the treadmill shouldnt be her best friend.
