Long story short...I hurt myself VERY bad.

My doctors are in the process of determining how bad. The suspicion is a Brachial Plexus injury. This could be anything from a pinch to a rupture or tear from the root. I am scheduled for a EMG to assess nerve damage and a couple more MRI's to assess if there is also soft tissue damage.

My left arm tricep is atrophied from a cold arm flexed circumference of 17.5" to just barely holding on to 16". Strength is all but wiped out after initial injury and is now maybe 10% of pre injury, if that. Lat muscle and pec muscle have also atrophied very dramatically.

I have a prognosis that is good, but I am hesitant to believe this as of yet, until we diagnose the extent of the trauma. As of today I am 6 weeks post injury. All of the symptoms are on the normal course and pace of such an injury.

Anyway, my thoughts wondered into the use of some products that may assist in my recovery.
Entrez PubMed
Entrez PubMed
Entrez PubMed

So I am hoping that soon I will get a true diagnosis and a true prognosis. Unfortunately, until I have data I am a pessimist. Depending upon the diagnosis we could be looking at anything from rehabilitation only, to as much as surgery, and then, likely even more rehabilitation. I can live with either, it is just the uncertainty and the waiting that is playing games with me psychologically.

So in the meantime I thought I would begin my study of the options to potentiate the recovery and healing process. I don't know if this is anything that I can afford to consider as I have no idea the extent or magnitude of supply required for treatment with these substances.

Anyway. I just needed to start looking forward and get out of this hopelessness feeling that I have. I (originally) posted this in the IBE forum specifically because of the "innovative products" that you bring to the industry.

So...discuss.

I honestly think judicious use of IGF can fix dang near anything. I know that sounds naive, but with my own less serious injuries to threads like the one CEDeoudes put up for his huge injury, it seems to be far too underrated for this purpose.

Hang in there, B. We've all seen guys come back from some pretty awful injuries when they try..and we all know you certainly will.

Yes, bioman, your experience and opinion and CEDeoudes' thread made me start to do my research into these sort of supplements. Then of course those rats make it conclusive ;)

The physical aspects of this injury are really the least of my heartache. The bb'ing lifestyle was/is my alternate therapy, and God knows I have issues.

Thanks for the support guys. It really means a whole lot to me.

I was asked by Sam what happened so I'll share the summary of what I shared with Sam for those interested:

"I was loading my quad into the back of my truck. The back end slipped off the end of the tailgate while it was still in the grip of my left hand. My arm was partially extended above my head at about 75-80°. I held onto it and it crashed down onto my shoulder like I was catching a 300lb DB. I was sort of pinned under it and had to tip toe squat it off me back onto the bed of the truck. I could ramble on about it but you get the gist of it. Pretty bad."

I have my EMG tomorrow morning and I got a call that my MRI is in the evening. I am hoping to get a solid diagnosis and a prognosis on this situation.

Thanks again.

Jay, you continue to humble me.

Well I got some feedback from some other guys whom I have asked for help:

uniquenutrition ("smart drug guy"): Idebenone, L-Huperzine A for NGF production and R-Hydrolipoic acid.

*Loki ("smart guy on drugs"): ashwagandha Entrez PubMed

*I only joke. He is one smart kid regardless.

EDIT: I'm going to move this to the supplement forum to open it to other alternative discussion outside of my original focus on just GH/IGF sort of supplementation.

Hey, I know someone that had this issue and they used GH to fix it and it worked for them without surgery. But you may need surgery if you have a anything that came out of its normal place, but I really feel you can get over this and be back to your good old boy self again ! Dont get down man its just temporary ! I have faith that it will be fine :) There are such surgeons who do micro surgery for nerves, I had this on my hand 12 years ago and was very pleased. Keep an open mind! Best wishes for a fast recovery, and hey dont forget we have mature muscle and muscle memory on our side ehh buddy ! :D

Man I feel your pain to some degree...
I broke my left elbow in December, well actually I dislocated the joint and fractured a large fragment from the joint. Three weeks into January, I had surgery to install 3 pins and a metal plate to secure the joint.

During the process, my ulnar nerve was stretched, causing my left hand to be 70% useless for a while. Next week is 4 MONTHS since surgery. I have about 60% strength back in my hand, but I am still lacking about 25% mobility, namely my pinky which I can't control the movement to save my life.

For 2 months, I had a constant tingle in my hand as well as numbness, which was uncomfortable and painful at times...still is.

The point is that nerve grows SLOW. 1mm a DAY. 1 Inch a month. I am anticipating that I will have full control in August.

And I dont even want to talk about atrophy. Its depressing as hell. My hand has lost so much muscle that its just bones, Im terrified that I will break it next. My arm and shoulder is half the size and definition of my left.

I know the depression you are dealing with right now.. i was there. All my dreams and plans for the next year went right out the window. I was stuck in a metal brace for 12 weeks, which was awkward, frustrating, and embarassing at the least. Take it easy, take the time to relax and catch up on sleep. 5 years down the road, its more important that you heal properly... Injuries suck, but take them with a grain of salt... or you'll tear yourself apart mentally and physically.

Here for support if you need anything.

Yea man I know how you feel to. I was in a bad car accident and crushed 4 vertibre some ribs and broke my sternum. i was out of it ffor 8 months and when I started back I was weaker than the first day I ever picked up a weight. Not to mention 2 other breaks on my hands at seperate time...including now. So I know how you feel.

The nerve damage...I have some bad on my back. Its been 2 years and still have about a 6 inch circle spot where it kills me. Even scratching it or something like that sends sharp pain through my back. Usually just time is the only thing that can fix it. But good luck man with it. Hope you heal up fast.

Talk to your doctor about hyperbaric chambers.

It could be a long shot, but many doctors suggested that I should have used one as a newborn... I don't think it was an option at the time.

I am following this closely. I just had a c4-5 fusion and the nerve roots to my left shoulde/arm are still really angry. I am 2 months post op and still ony have about 50% of the original strength in that arm. I used to be able to DB shoulder press 100's for 5, just today I sould not get a 45 started. Lots of atrophy in my anterior delt and tricep. I have been wondering if there was some treatment to help me out. This thread gives me some hope. Sorry for your injury B150, but just know that there is hope and you are not alone in this.

I found a few things so far- some are a little weird, but we did some research on this in grad school:

J Neurosci. 2007 Apr 11;27(15):4154-64.Click here to read Links
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs promote axon regeneration via RhoA inhibition.

* Fu Q,
* Hue J,
* Li S.

Department of Neurology, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Texas 75390, USA.

After a CNS injury in the adult mammals, axonal regeneration is very limited because of the reduced intrinsic growth capacity and nonpermissive environment for axonal elongation. The growth inhibitions from CNS myelin and astroglial chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans partially account for the lack of CNS repair. Here, we show that the nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) ibuprofen and indomethacin, the drugs widely used as pain relievers in the clinic, can surmount axon growth restrictions from myelin and proteoglycans by potently inhibiting their downstream pathway RhoA signal. Similar to Rho and Rock inhibitors C3 transferase or Y27632 [(R)-(+)-trans-N-(4-pyridyl)-4-(1-aminoethyl)-cyclohexanecarboxamide], both NSAID drugs stimulate a significant neurite growth in the cultured dorsal root ganglion neurons exposed to the inhibitory substrates. Systemic administration of ibuprofen to spinal cord-lesioned rodents reverses the active RhoA signal around injury area measured via Rho-GTP binding assay. Subcutaneous injections of ibuprofen via minipumps to rats with a thoracic spinal cord transection or contusion injury result in substantial corticospinal and serotonergic axon sprouting in the caudal spinal cord and promote locomotor functional recovery, even delaying the treatment 1 week after trauma. In contrast, the non-RhoA-inhibiting NSAID naproxen does not have the axon growth-promoting effects on cultured or lesioned neurons. These studies demonstrate the therapeutic potential of RhoA-inhibiting NSAIDs in treating CNS injuries characterized by axonal disconnection including spinal cord injury.

Thyroid hormone in biodegradable nerve guides stimulates sciatic nerve regeneration: a potential therapeutic approach for human peripheral nerve injuries.

* Barakat-Walter I,
* Krafsik R,
* Schenker M,
* Kuntzer T.

Department of Cell Biology and Morphology, University of Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. [email protected]

It has been already demonstrated that thyroid hormone (T3) is one of the most important stimulating factors in peripheral nerve regeneration. We have recently shown that local administration of T3 in silicon tubes at the level of the transected rat sciatic nerve enhanced axonal regeneration and improved functional recovery. Silicon, however, cannot be used in humans because it causes a chronic inflammatory reaction. Therefore, in order to provide future clinical applications of thyroid hormone in human peripheral nerve lesions, we carried out comparative studies on the regeneration of transected rat sciatic nerve bridged either by biodegradable P(DLLA-(-CL) or by silicon nerve guides, both guides filled with either T3 or phosphate buffer. Our macroscopic observation revealed that 85% of the biodegradable guides allowed the expected regeneration of the transected sciatic nerve. The morphological, morphometric and electrophysiological analysis showed that T3 in biodegradable guides induces a significant increase in the number of myelinated regenerated axons (6862 +/- 1831 in control vs. 11799 +/- 1163 in T3-treated). Also, T3 skewed the diameter of myelinated axons toward larger values than in controls. Moreover, T3 increases the compound muscle action potential amplitude of the flexor and extensor muscles of the treated rats. This T3 stimulation in biodegradable guides was equally well to that obtained by using silicone guides. In conclusion, the administration of T3 in biodegradable guides significantly improves sciatic nerve regeneration, confirming the feasibility of our technique to provide a serious step towards future clinical application of T3 in human peripheral nerve injuries.

Dave,

Your story is very parallel to my in many ways as far as hopes and plans etc. For me, bodybuilding has been therapeutic. I am a recovering alcoholic who has transformed his life over the last 5 years through bodybuilding.

When I got out of DOC for my DUI charges I threw myself into this. It was my refuge over a year or more when I struggled with not having a drivers license and had to rely on my wife and/or a carpool for all of my transportation. It was my refuge when I struggled with the pain of reversal of custody of my two older ones. They went back to be with there mom and have remained since. The story goes on and on. But i know you get the gist of what it has meant to me. It is not all about the aesthetics, but I would be lying if I said it was not part of it. It has become the first and most productive thing I have consistently and independently accomplished and achieved on my own in all of my 42yrs. Of course I have a tremendous amount of things in my life that i have accomplished and to be grateful for otherwise, but I think you get the point.

Transformation thread - Mind and Muscle Forums

Those are several years old. I am a bit older, balder, more muscular and not quite as lean now but you can see its been a life changing vehicle.

This injury is a physical trauma on top of several to many ongoing challenges that life has been presenting me this years, from visitation, college tuition, vehicle overhauls, termites, A/C units, etc etc etc. I know this is life. I know it will be OK. I know God has great plans for me whether I can see what they are right now or not. I know there is infinite hope and an abundance of blessing in my life. I also know my feelings are hurt real bad right now.

Thanks so much for understanding and I really really appreciate your support and encouragement.

Got back from the docs today. GI specialist, Thyroid Uptake testing, Neurologist specialist coming soon. Good news is that I was put on a NSAID today. I have gone several years without any pain killers or any other meds but now I need to think about my job. They gave me Celebrex and tonight was the first time in a long, long time where I was able to walk straight out and drive home after working out. Normally I have to sit and stretch for 10-15 minutes and then sit through a 30 minute drive home in intense pain.

My doc told me I have a wide variety and complex muscularskeletal(sp) problems and it's going to be a pain(haha) to figure it all out. But it's a step in the positive because I left the office today feeling as if they believed me and wanted to help...The cardiologist called them to let them know the intense pain I went trhough on the stress test and that I wasn't able to walk afterwards.

But like you B, I'm thankful for so many things that i am still blessed. This hurts me because it threatens my job longevity and in turn my ability to provide for my family which is my single biggest motivation. This also hurts because I value the time I spend with my family and when dad has to sit down after a few hundred feet of walking through the park, I feel like i'm letting my kids down.

Family, friends and loved ones keep me going though. If it wasn't for those close to me and those across the internet, I doubt I would of pulled through this far. B5150, Jblaze, Bobo, MulletSoldier,Tinytoad,BigVrunga,Stryder,Dsade,Yeahright, Dr.D and several others have been my online family and have listened to me when I needed to talk but didn't feel comfortable talking to anyone near me. They gave me opinions, they just listened and they shared their similar stories when I thought I was the only one. I couldn't of asked for better support and friendship...And that, I do thank God for.

Prognosis went from good to bad in a the breath of a sentence. EMG test indicates a C7 root avulsion. This is NOT good.

MRI will be performed this evening and likely present more concrete evidence of the extent of the damage.
Prognosis changed back to good. But I use the term very loosely.

There is not root nerve avulsion. Both sides (laterally) of the C7 nerve are in tact. But there appears to have ben considerable trauma to the spine in the C6-C7 area. There is bulging (some call it herniated or ruptured). It appears that the compressive injury most likely pinched the nerve at the root very very hard. This is indicative of the poor EMG results. If you take a look at the diagrams that I posted in the link at the opening post your will see that the symptoms of my atrophy are in line with this. The C7 root branches off into the lateral pec, the latisimus dorsi and the triceps. I have severe nervation (indicated in the EMG testing) as well a tremendous atrophy. So, though the tests do indicate that there is not avulsion, ther was very obviously a tremendous trauma to the nerve at the root.

It seems that I am begining to get some very minimal strength improvement and I am beginning to feel localized pain, as well as pain deeper in the root of my elbow, which is a good sign, as I believe that feeling is the beginning of the healing process. I really need to rest my body. I have a tremendous amount of physical stress and the emotional stress can be even more exhaustive.

So the prognosis is good(er) but rehabilitation will be extensive. The prognosis for complete recovery is not certain. But my will is great and my spirit is greater.

"Not by my will, not by my might, but by my spirit..."

I have a long road to recovery. I am beginning by taking a vacation to the Mayan Palace (at my mothers timeshare) at Rocky Pointe Mexico. I will be there with my wife and two daughters (almost 6yo and almost 19yo) for four days from May 21st thru the 24th.

When I return I will plan my work and work my plan. I will journal my progress, including my supplement protocol. May even start with pictures of my atrophied parts. Granted they will be ("fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life") on a beach or poolside in Mexico. :)

But foremost I will plan to be abundantly grateful for all of my many blessings which include my family, my health and my friends. Many of you have demonstrated a tremendous outpouring of support and encouragment. May you be blessed in return.

We need a throwing up emoticon for this quote. ;)

B - best of luck my brother.
I think the best thing I've read research on for inflammation is Alflutop (Adequan is the name for horses/dogs).
It's not approved in the US. No clue why. It is in Europe though.

The other supplement that I liked is Microlactin (either Vital Joint or NOW has a product with it). Well - Celadrin (but that was already mentioned).

Again - best of luck and speedy recovery. :head:

Today an elderly lady passed out in church so i went in to help her and started asking what kinds of meds she was on and if she was a diabetic etc etc. I noticed she had rheumatoid arthritis on her hands pretty badly and she said...I just started Celebrex and i'm on blood pressure medication.

The good news is the lady recovered and even came up to me later after the confirmation (my son was getting his) and thanked me for helping her and that she was getting a doctors appt. to go over any possible medicine interaction issues. She said, 'you were so calm and reassuring and you made me feel safe'

That really made my day. It's hard to explain but it meant a lot when she said that. Anyways, I started this reply as a funny reply to the vioxx. Sorry for the tangent :)

b5150.... its funny... i came accross that thread you linked to on MandM on Thursday, 15 mins before I came accross this thread. Ive already ordered a cocktail of supplements in hope of stimulating some faster nerve regrowth..hopefully NP will have it at my door today..

Just put yourself in the future, a few months down the road. This was my savior when I was injured. When it sucked the most and when I didnt think I could take it, I just always ignored my present situation and focused my mind on 3 months down the road when things would be significantly better and healed. I did this too when I was in the ER for 6 hours in absolute agony before they would treat me or give me ANY pain meds. Just focus on the next step. Put yourself in YOUR shoes 3 and 6 months from now when things will be better. It will keep your mind optimistic and looking towards tomorrow instead of sulking over today..

have fun on that vacation... im jealous!!!

On the supplement part;

Look into Acetyl L Carnitine Arginate instead of regular ALCAR. I've used it as a noot and it's fantastic stuff..way better than standard alcar and it' supposed to regrow dendrites 4x faster. Pricey, but BAC has the bulk powder.

Also, Lithium orotate is supposed to do the same though I have not gotten around to using this one yet. It's cheap as a powder at least.

You'll like Ashwagandha. Finding the right dose can be tricky. Too much and it makes me a little psychotic, but a small dose mellows things out nicely.

L-Hup-A is nice..BAC has a powder with Vinpocetine and Hup A that I like. This mix would cover 3 bases..nerve regen, cerebral circulation and cerebral metabolic enhancement.

You are welcome, my pleasure. All the experimenting I have done should go towards some good use besides making supp companies wealthy. lol

Theanine might also be useful here. It calms and soothes anxiety/depression as well as promotes nervous system healing. Personally, I would replace the Ashwa with a good quality Theanine like SunTheanine. It promotes GABA expression so if you use it with pGHT it might boost the effectiveness or at least the calming/sleep improvement part.

Thanks again bioman. You have some very going insight and experience in this area. Maybe we should have a get together at slide rock and discuss this over a coffee sometime. Seriously. You still in the Sedona area?

Irritating little update. I have a black and blue the size of a half dollar and swelling in the area of my neck where the EMG pin was poked in my neck. My neck has been aching and sore and clicking and I have had head aches. I have had no pain whatsoever in the area up until now. :aargh:

Oh...my $109.99 break job turned into a $1428 complete break overhaul. I just love it when it rains :frustrate
