here is a recipe for a homemade weight gainer:
1 cup oatmeal (grinded in a coffee grinder)
2 cups Fat Free Milk
2 scoops protein
1 tablespoon olive oil
Cals: 777. fat 19/ carb 89/ pro 72
have that twice per day.
Most weight gainer powders are just whey protein with some dextrose, a high GI carb.
if you wanna blend it then you can add even more stuff to it: bananas, cottage cheese, yogurt, peanut butter.

I think something like cable's suggestion will be much better for blood sugar. If you're taking it pre/post wo, drop the oil.

Supprised no one said this yet but food. Just eat more. All most weight gainers are is just lots and lots of sugar. I say make you own shake like the above. Or some muscle milk.

With weightgainer powders, you really gotta look at the labels and see what's bad in it.. The main things you DO NOT want in a gainer are:
High fructose corn syrup
Sucrose (I believe most Weider products pile this one in there, with 17g of milk protein..)
Cytogainer by CytoSport is a good product, Up Your Mass by MHP is also a good gainer.. Both are reasonable price-wise, UYM uses mostly milled brown rice and oat powder for carbs.. CytoGainer only has 5g simple sugars per serving (84g carbs per serving)..

Home made gainers are a better way to go IMO, cable's idea is good, you may substitute the olive oil with peanut butter if you want to change the taste a little

I like the homemade one the best, its more whole foods, and a lot more calories in it. I have a 10lb bucket of ProLabs N Large II, and it tastes fine, i like it, and its pretty cheap.

Yea Nlarge tastes great but its just tons of maltodextrin and fructose 28g of sugar.

Prolab Lean Mass Matrix. It's actually an MRP, but if you add 16oz of skim milk it's 570 cals. It's whey, casein, milk protein, barley, oats, and brown rice. The cinnamon oatmeal flavor is good stuff.
The oat shake that Cable posted is probably the best. You could add eggs &/or cottage cheese to it if you want different protein sources(you can't taste them in a shake).
Sometimes when I'm lazy I make one of these cheat shakes that you don't need a blender for. They're not nearly as healthy as oats, but it's better than cutting your cals short:
16oz Skim Chocolate Milk
1 scoop Vanilla Whey
1 Banana (blended or eaten on the side)
16oz Orange Juice
1 scoop Vanilla Whey
1 Whole Egg + 3 Egg Whites
Don't forget about dry skim milk powder either. It's tastey, healthy, cheap, and calorie dense.
As a last resort, you could order a tub of whey and a tub of maltodextrin and mix them yourself. It's much cheaper and just as good if not better than most of the gainers out there.

Maltodextrin is not a sugar but still has a very high GI and is the main carb source in cytogainer.Originally Posted by bigpetefox
From the cytogainer description:
"Carbs are complex maltodextrins from corn hybrids - stabilizes energy and prevents sugar crash."
The ingredient profile seems to make it sound better than it actually is:
"CytoCarb II (CytoSport's unique combination of branching as well as long linear chain maltodextrins with very low "DE" (Dextrose Equivalence) providing a complex carbohydrate source approximately 96.5% sugar-free)"

I like the IDS brand. and agree that food is the best. any comments on it?

Olive oil is great. Unsaturated fats make it great, there's nothing wrong with having them in there, they don't bond to the outer walls like saturated fats doOriginally Posted by Beowulf
On a side note, I love Prolab's MRPs, I still have a few left from last month Yum, especially when you make a shake with these!
