How do you take in calories needed from clean foods. It just feels like I can eat a 3 servings of chicken and gain almost no calories vrs eating mashed potatoes with butter and a steak. What is the balance between healthy and a calorie being a calorie ?

This is very true, its damn near impossible to eat 4-5K calories of freakin broccoli and chicken breast :D It's probably best to eat what you can clean, and then make up the difference in more dirty foods....that have high protein content. That way, you avoid too many simple carbs/sugar and instead get larger amounts of fat, since fat and protein go hand in hand with many foods (beef, eggs, milk, nuts, etc.). To be honest? I feel that dirty carbs and clean carbs are the same fcking difference....they all get mixed up in your stomach with fiber and protein and whatever when they are being digested and that blunts the effect of simple carbs. I am usually careful taking in simple carbs and sugar by itself....since that can cause the unwanted effects. In a nutshell, keep it high protein and divvy up the carbs and fat for the remainder....don't be afraid to eat higher fat, its good for you....just be sure to get enough good fats in addition to the other fats you take in. And don't be afraid of simple carbs either, provided you eat them in conjunction with the other macros.

Clean is entirely subjective. To me, a steak is eating 'clean' as it provides a host of micronutrients, has adequete saturated fat unless trimmed (which you shouldnt be doing) and so on.

And I wasn't trying to say steak was bad for you or anything. Just a bad choice of words

This is what I like to do....

because i have a high metabolism, i can lose fat quick. I like to clean bulk but with cardio added (if you want to watch your fat gain). The dirtier my diet is, the more cardio I do. It works for me.

chicken and veggies have their place, on a cut. that way you can a) eat clean and b) eat more food since dirtier foods equate to less calories available, and you only have a few thousand calories to work with on a cut. I eat dirty on cuts too, but I just eat way less food and keep my protein moderate to high. Believe me, on 2K or so cals? you don't get to eat much dirty food after your 800 cals of protein is spoken for lol.

Works on a cut too lol. just have to eat less
yeah I just posted that in my last post matter of fact. I still eat steak and noodles and whatever like that on cuts, but I may only be able to eat twice a day along with a couple protein shakes and maybe an amino drink to equal up to 5 spaced meals. I am fine though, I tend to have a low appetite....except on GHRP6 lol, that stuff makes me so hungry its not even funny.

It will vary by the individual, some guys put on mostly muscle, some put on mostly fat, some are in the middle.....depends on diet, training, genetics, supplementation etc. too many variables to put a % or number on it really. Whatever fat you put on, will just have to come back off during a cut later, but you just try to minimize it....that would be what is termed as a lean bulk, putting on mostly muscle, but in smaller increments of weight gain than a conventional bulk. A conventional bulk you would be less concerned with fat accumulation. I don't like to bulk anymore, lean bulk is as bulky as I want to go :D

The lean bulk sounds more like something if be Interested in It fits my life style better. My job demands a lot of hiking and running so it's important all my body weight is usable

Should I just keep track of my diet and weight. And basically see what's most affective or is there a general starting point. Like a weight/calories calculator?

Its good to know what your maintenance level of calories is....so I would start counting calories and see what you have been taking in for the past however long. Just eat as usual and calculate your calories and protein, carbs, fat....for each day (do it for a few days to a week). This should be an accurate starting point, from there you just add +500, or+1000, like I was saying earlier, everybody is different and require different caloric increases to gain weight.

Eating clean is very subjective to what each person considers clean and what it takes for their body to gain from.

My diet while bulking consist of chicken, salmon, steak, ground beef 94/6, ground turkey 93/7, whey, casein, Greek yogurt, and cottage cheese for protein.

My carbs come from sweet potato, rice (brown and jasmine), oats, red potatoes, white potatoes, Ezekiel muffins and bread, cream of wheat, and waxy maize. Oh and fruit tons.

My fats come from avacado, nuts, olive oil, coconut oil, pb, and cheese from here and there.

Things I eat about once a week on a bulk that I don't eat on a cut are 1/2 pizza w/ double chicken and pineapple, chicken parm, and a publix sub for those who know what that is.

On a cut I don't cheat, my diet is my diet. When bulking I eat a lot of homemade trail mix with dried fruit and nuts to hit those higher cals. I also eat fattier cuts of meat then on cuts. I like chicken thighs and rib eye on bulks on cuts I only do breast, tenderloins as fat as chicken and with steak I do filet and sirloin.

On cuts my days are nearly a third of the amount on my bulks.

I Make my own Publix sub......I buy 8 oz of everroast chicken, 2 oz of cheese, a single sub roll at the Publix deli/bakery and I'm good :D I have a pound of Publix everroast and a pound of american cheese in the fridge right now with a 3-pack of sub rolls (OK half of it is gone already)...and I had 20 of the Publix breaded hot wings, about 100 cals and 7 grams protein per wing give or take with the size differential you run into with little wings versus dinosaur sized wings lol (OK I already killed those at 10 per day). I made sure to load up on high protein foods for the weekend since I had 2 online finals, and online final assignments due this weekend, and I didn't want to leave to buy any food.

For me, its just saying away from nasty food (sugars and stuff). I can eat burgers and not put on fat. Eat more burgers, do more cardio and still keep fat off but use all the carbs and protein that are in those bulk foods.

I am not saying burgers and pizza are my main dishes in a bulk...lol...but i love getting in large amount of carbs and protein in one meal and being able to keep the fat gain at a minimum.

I eat tons of burgers in my bulks. I love burgers. I limit myself on pizza because I am an adict, but I will kill burgers twice a week or more. I normally make them myself because I just think my grill taste better and I can eat as much beef as I want vs a resturant which makes dinky burgers and I have to buy two.

I do the same thing. I have been on a spicy meat kick from boars head lately. Don't know why but I ve been getting 1/2 lb of spicy roast beef, 1/2 lb of Cajun turkey, and 1/2 lb of blazzin' buffalo chicken and making my own spicy subs.

Most of my carbs are sugar. Chocolate milk, Fruit, Creamed rice (mostly milk) and PowerAde constitute the majority of my carbs. Just remember that some proteins can stimulate the release of insulin greater than that of some sugars and that not all sugars are created equal (fructose vs. glucose for example).
