Whole egg consumption improves lipoprotein profiles and insulin sensitivity to a greater extent than yolk-free egg substitute in individuals with metabolic syndrome.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: We investigated if daily egg feeding, along with carbohydrate restriction, would alter lipoprotein metabolism and influence atherogenic lipoprotein profiles and insulin resistance in men and women with metabolic syndrome (MetS).

METHODS: In a randomized, single-blind, parallel design, participants consumed either 3 whole eggs/day (EGG, n=20) or the equivalent amount of yolk-free egg substitute (SUB, n=17), as part of a moderately carbohydrate-restricted diet (25%-30% energy) for 12 weeks. Plasma lipids, apolipoproteins (apos), oxidized LDL (oxLDL), cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) and lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) activities were assessed at baseline and week 12. Lipoprotein particle concentrations and sizes were measured by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

RESULTS: Atherogenic dyslipidemia improved for all individuals as evidenced by reductions in plasma triglycerides, apoC-III, apoE, oxLDL, VLDL particle diameter, large VDL, total IDL, small LDL, and medium LDL particles (P<0.05). Furthermore, there were increases in HDL-cholesterol, large LDL and large HDL particles (P<0.05) for all individuals. However, there were greater increases in HDL-cholesterol and large HDL particles, and reductions in total VLDL and medium VLDL particles for those consuming EGG compared to SUB (P<0.05). Plasma insulin and insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were reduced, while LCAT activity, and both HDL and LDL diameters increased over time in the EGG group only (P<0.05).

CONCLUSIONS: Incorporating daily whole egg intake into a moderately carbohydrate-restricted diet provides further improvements in the atherogenic lipoprotein profile and in insulin resistance in individuals with MetS.

Effects of high fat versus high carbohydrate diets on plasma lipids and lipoproteins in endurance athletes.

Abstract
PURPOSE AND METHODS:

Recent research suggesting the performance benefits of high fat diets for endurance athletes have been viewed with caution because of the potential negative health consequences, including increased coronary heart disease risk. This study examined the effects of a high fat (HF: 50% of total energy from fat, 37% carbohydrate) versus a high carbohydrate (HC: 15% of total energy from fat, 69% carbohydrate) diet on plasma lipids and lipoproteins in 32 endurance trained cyclists over a 3-month period. Plasma total, low density lipoprotein (LDL), high density lipoprotein (HDL), HDL2 and HDL3 cholesterol, triglycerides, apolipoprotein A1, and hematocrit (Hct) were measured at baseline and after weeks 4, 8, and 12.
RESULTS:

Changes in lipids and lipoproteins from baseline to week 12 did not differ between the two groups except for triglycerides, which increased significantly from 1.04 +/- 0.17 mmol.L-1 to 1.28 +/- 0.31 mmol.L-1 in HC (P = 0.012). The only significant changes that occurred within each group from baseline to week 12 was the significant increase in total cholesterol and triglycerides inHC. Body composition changes did not differ between the two groups from baseline to week 12 as measured by dual x-ray absorptiometry.
CONCLUSIONS:

During periods of endurance training when energy requirements are high, increasing the percentage of fat in the diet to approximately 50% of total energy did not result in adverse changes to the plasma lipoprotein profiles of this group of athletes.

Reminds me of some of the research di Pasquale cited about eggs to break the myth (to me, anyways) of eggs causing hypercholesterolemia and consequent atherosclerosis (I think its link to atherosclerosis was his main focus). I can't find it anymore as the old website I first found it on and later "favorite'd" no longer exists.
