Regulators Looking at Safety of Antibacterial in Soap - Children's Health - FOXNews.com

The FDA noted that there was no evidence that triclosan could be harmful to people but noted that an animal study showed the chemical may alter hormone regulation and several other lab studies showed that bacteria may be able to evolve resistance to triclosan in a way that can help them also resist antibiotics.

No wonder our testosterone levels are dropping 1% per year. I think I'll permanantly be on a low dose of anti estrogen.

We also need to be less clean as a society. Autoimmune diseases are much more prevalent in "modern" countries than developing countries.

I didnt see anything about the increase of estrogens, but the fact that antibacterial soaps are counterproductive i.e. makes the bacteria resistant to antibiotics, AND can actually subject you the user to a higher rate of infection has been known for quiet some time.
The real issue here for me is WHY are they still being sold? Its sort of like everyone "Going Green" and all this talk and "grass roots" movements and reduce the amount of plastic consumption, but the grocery store still has plastic bags...I digress :D

You may be referring to parabens. If so, its a green fad and you can simply ignore it.

From wiki:
Animal experiments have shown that parabens have weak estrogenic activity, acting as xenoestrogens.[19] In an in vivo study, the effect of butylparaben was determined to be approximately 100,000 times weaker than that of estradiol, and was only observed at a dose level approximately 25,000 times higher than the level typically used to preserve products.[20]The study also found that the in vivo estrogenic activity of parabens is reduced by about three orders of magnitude compared to in vitro activity.
The estrogenic activity of parabens increase with the length of the alkyl group. It is believed that propylparaben is estrogenic to a certain degree as well,[21] though this is expected to be less than butylparaben by virtue of its less lipophilic nature. Since it can be concluded that the estrogenic activity of butylparaben is negligible under normal use, the same should be concluded for shorter analogs.
Some estrogens are known to drive the growth of tumors; however the estrogenic activity and mutagenic activity of estrogens are not the same, with the latter dependent on free radical chemistry and not estrogen receptor activity.[22] Nonetheless, this study has elicited some concern about the use of butylparaben, and to a lesser extent other parabens as well, in cosmetics and antiperspirants. A 2005 safety assessment of parabens concluded that cosmetics containing parabens do not, on the basis of currently available evidence, pose a health risk; because of the low doses involved and the low probability that parabens will penetrate into the tissue, remain intact, and accumulate there.[7]

A few cities in California have banned them; the rest of the state will eventually impose a tax on them or ban them as well.

Interesting read on parabens. I'd heard they were estrogenic but not that they were very weak.

Hormone Disruption
Hormone disruption in fish has been documented in rivers and water bodies throughout the U.S., primarily in waters impacted by sewage treatment plant discharges, although cause and effect linkage with these chemicals in the field remain unclear. In laboratory studies, triclosan acts like weak estrogen in organisms while triclocarban has been shown to augment the activity of testosterone. Fish exposure studies first identified concerns regarding triclosan's endocrine disrupting potential. After exposures ranging from 1 – 100 parts per billion, the medaka fry (Oryzias latipes), a species of fish commonly used for toxicity testing, exhibited changes in fin length and sex ratio[8]. Triclosan was found to be highly toxic in early life stages of the medaka, reducing hatching success and delaying hatching time[9]. Also, in this study, triclosan induced vitellogenin production in male fish (vitellogenin is a component of the yolk sac in eggs normally only produced by the females). Similar concerns were found in South African clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis), a common test species, as male frogs injected with triclosan-synthesized vitellogenin and had reduced testosterone levels[10]. A separate study using bullfrogs demonstrated triclosan's ability to bind to the thyroid hormone receptor and in rodents, triclosan administered for 31 days beginning shortly after weaning reduces thyroxin levels in male pubertal rats
