The interesting thing about this is that nobody is actually licensed to cultivate hoodia from Africa right now. You hit the nail on the head that P57 is the ingredient responsible for its effects but pharmaceutical companies found it much too hard to extract P57 in any significant amounts and also could not synthesize it in a lab effectively so they abandoned the project. The kicker is that it has been deemed illegal to cultivate the hoodia cactus without a license in countries where it grows most abundant because it was on the verge of extinction after its effects were realized, so you have to wonder where people are getting their hoodia and just how pure it really is. Also the rest of the cactus contains some pretty nasty chemicals and if not properly cultivated will probably make its way into hoodia supplements.
