Hello Guys! Here is a study about Prohormone supplement 3b-hydroxy-5a-androst-1-en-17-one - the benefits and the effects in your body during bodybuilding.

"Purpose: Prohormone supplements(PS) are recognized not to impart anabolic or ergogenic effects in men, but the research supporting these conclusions is dated. The Anabolic Steroid Control Act was amended in 2004; the viability of PS have not been evaluated since that time. Methods:17 resistance-trained males(23±1yrs; 13.1±1.5% body fat) were randomly assigned to receive either 330mg/d 3b-hydroxy-5a-androst-1-en-17-one(PROHORMONE; n=9) or sugar(PLACEBO; n=8) p.o. and complete a 4 week(16 session) structured resistance-training program. Body composition, muscular strength, circulating lipids, and markers of liver and kidney dysfunction were assessed at study onset and termination. Results:pROHORMONE increased lean body mass by 6.3±1.2%, decreased fat body mass by 24.6±7.1%, and increased their back squat 1-RM and competition total by 14.3±1.5% and 12.8±1.1%; respectively. These improvements exceeded(p<0.05) PLACEBO, who increased lean body mass by 0.5±0.8%, reduced fat body mass by 9.5±3.6%, and increased back squat 1-RM and competition total by 5.7±1.7% and 5.9±1.7%; respectively. PROHORMONE also experienced multiple adverse effects. These included a 38.7±4.0% reduction in HDL (p<0.01), a 32.8±15.05% elevation in LDL (p<0.01), and elevations of 120.0±22.6% and 77.4±12.0% in LDL/HDL and C/HDL; respectively(both p<0.01). PROHORMONE also exhibited elevations in serum creatinine (19.6±4.3%;p<0.01) and AST(113.8±61.1%;p=0.05), as well as reductions in serum albumin (5.1±1.9%;p=0.04), ALP(16.4±4.7%;p=0.04), and GFR(18.0±3.3%;p=0.04). None of these values changed(all p>0.05) in PLACEBO. Conclusion:The oral PS 3b-hydroxy-5a-androst-1-en-17-one improves body composition and muscular strength. However, these changes come at a significant cost. Cardiovascular health and liver function are particularly compromised. Given these findings, we feel the harm associated with this particular PS outweighs any potential benefit."

1. Troll goofing on us, considering non-lifting avi.
2. Someone who recently discovered that VitaminWorld sold steroids and wanted to make sure that the Minds here at Anabolics were aware they were out there and what they did.

Of course, it seems that this study was uniquely biased to make the supplement look bad. Looking at the statistics of the study some odd things show up at first glance (we will have a detailed write up fairly soon). First, they site the product as showing “liver” stress but uniquely not all liver values seem to be increased. Bilirubin, which is a key indicator of liver damage is not mentioned as being altered at all. it is well established that liver values and kidney values change with hard exercise and it is more than plausable that the increased exercise intensity (from the supplement) would cause the individual liver and kidney markers to rise without having anything to do with actual liver and kidney stress.

As for the cholesterol changes mentioned in the study…it’s laughable to even discuss this as science can’t even decide the value and harm of cholesterol for heart disease much less the small changes shown in the study. A new study done by University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine calls into question everything we know about cholesterol. ”Recent scientific findings have directed increasing interest toward the concept that measures of the function of HDL, rather than simply its level in the blood, might be more important to assessing cardiovascular risk and evaluating new HDL-targeted therapies,” said Daniel J. Rader, MD, director, Preventive Cardiology at Penn.

Thus it is more likely than not that a minor change in cholesterol values among college aged men is no longer even worth mentioning until science can decide whether cholesterol based blood tests have any value in determining heart disease…

Finally, they FAIL to detail in their abstract that they gave the students 150mg per day of 6,7,-dihydroxybergamottin which is a compound in grapefruit that is KNOWN to inhibit liver function.

No, its not news at all. Every single oral I've used that required liver conversion or metabolization has given me almost identical labs. LDL elevated/HDL reduced, liver enzymes elevated. Almost anyone who resistance trains will have high creatinine. And elevated bilirubin(usually indicated by jaundice) comes looooooong after a few measly elevated liver enzymes on a crumby low-dosed 4 week cycle. So you are right, this is not only not news at all, but its also labs that we've all seen many times interpreted by people who of course are going to state these completely reversible adverse reactions are not worth the risk.

Now I'm bored, so let's try and find a pub med article where a drug makes your pee turn black and grow additional appendages while building muscle and increasing IQ.
