Expect depression, extreme insomnia, complete loss of appetite inducing extreme weight loss, and the possible development of tics and/or tourettes syndrome.

You'll be more tentative all right, but only because you're too depressed to blink. I'd stay away from this **** at all costs, it gave me hell for over a year before I figured out it was the cause of my problems.

I've taken a 30mg for recreational purposes (along with a ton of alcohol) and I felt like a million bucks. I couldn't stop talking or smiling for 8 hours or so. It was horrible coming down off of it, I don't think I've ever been more depressed in my life, and i couldn't sleep for a while. It's a combination of 4 different amphetamines.

I take it every now and then when i have a ton of work to do. But dont take it in the evening unless you want to lie in bed all night tossing and turning. Its great for studying and focusing, while it lasts. However coming off of it sucks for me. Also I suggest you eat while youre on it even though it suppresses you appetite.

Did you take it for narcolepsy, ADD, or something else ???

I went to see my Dr. for phentermine because the clen is cramping my upper back something horrible. I thought I would substitute phen for clen. I did not tell him this was my intention, but instead I complained about low energy while low carbing/going to grad school/ working at the same time.

After he thought for a moment, he said he was going to write me a script for Adderall.
He said it was very important I see him once a month or he would not re-write it if I liked it.

When he suggested Adderall I stopped in the middle of my sentence.....looked around the room......I was thinking "Did I hear him correctly?" LOL I didn't want to jump up and down with joy in front of him. LOL I've never taken it but had heard it works pretty good.

Thanks very much for the information and suggestions guys. I do appreciate it and will watch for these side effects.

Well, in a sense, it is. This is an area I actually have some experience in..heheh.. Anyway, for those people without ADHD, Adderall speeds you up, gives you the jitters, makes you paranoid, and keeps you up all night - just like coke. For people with ADHD, it slows them down, and the rest of the sides are the same. While occasional recreational use of Adderall won't cause many side effects, chronic use of it definitely will. Depression will set in after a few weeks, as will the weight loss.

I've experienced both coke and adderall and there is literally no difference in feeling. Coming down off coke you will want to kill yourself, just as you will coming down off of Adderall. They both cause severe and almost insantaneous depression, although with coke it's because you've stopped supplying your system with it, thus you need more. With adderall, its the opposite, the only way to stop the depression is to stop supplying your system with it.

It's not medical genius, but it's my real world advice, so take heed. Be careful with what you're taking and know when to stop.

Ya i've had a bit of experience with it myself, the "rock" that is. and i can't even express on paper the horrible feeling you get when coming down.
what about vicodin ES (extra strength). i seemed to get more energy when i'd pop one of those and drink a few beers, i know not the smartest thing to do but i did it. just curious why a pain killer would react in my system that way?
hope i didn't hijack your thread "Rhapsody" just didn't make since to start a seperate thread about "popping pills and drinking alcohol"

    even with extended release???

I'm guessing your definition of chronic is long term every day use??

What happens when the side effects become unbearable...? Do Dr.'s change the patient's to a differant drug?

By chronic, I meant every day use, as one would use it for ADHD. As for extended release, it will still make you feel like ****. I had an idiot friend who got ahold of a bunch of Adderall XR not knowing it was extended release and took like 45mg of it. Needless to say, he was pretty messed up for a day and a half, considering the typical total daily dosage is around 10mg. If the side effects are too much for you, there are a few alternate medications you can take, one of which I had but couldn't take for medical reasons. I forgot the name of it but I'm sure you can ask your doctor, or do a search for "new adderall medication" and find it/them.

Typically the way medicine is supposed to work is that 1)your symptoms subside and 2)you experience minor to no side effects. If either of these happen differently, you need to seek a new medication, and if your doctor will not give you new one, you need to find a new doctor.

I have ADHD - how do I convince my Doctor to prescribe it. Hell he does not prescribe high blood pressure medicine for me thinking that I will take steroids again. Should I see another doctor? Coworkers have described me as talented but not able to apply myself - what do you recommend. I was one of the 3 students in each class that had ADHD. Too bad it is associated with Amphetamine abuse -one of the 5 substances my work place checks for. I always have to keep in mind the conservative mind set of my work place envirnment. Ignorant folks for the most part. Let us give 3 cheers for the ignorant people of the world!!!

Well, my Dr. is getting away prescribing it to me because I'm Bipolar. I have mind racing....I'm not the severe mood swing bipolar.

He has given me strattera which is for ADHD also. I do like it alot, and I have experienced no side effects. I am able to focus on a subject for a longer period of time without suppressing my creative thinking like alot of the epileptic medications do.

He gives me the maximum dose because my mind racing is pretty bad. Insomnia for weeks, but I now have a contol on this part of it.

In short he wrote for 30mg of Adderall XL and I took it yesterday and today. For the first 6 hours you can't shut me up and I get the false sense of well being.

Tonight, I'm sitting here feeling kinda like **** or maybe equivilent to being run over by a truck after coming off it. Again, my mind doesn't want to relax and shut down. I have to sleep.

When I had severe insomnia I gave myself Growth Hormone Injections in order to get what I was missing when I wasn't sleeping. But I'm out of growth and would rather not take it at the age of 33 if I can help it.

    Seeeeeee............I'm rambling..

I can talk like ****ing forever...LOL

To my knowledge Adderall is not prescribed for bi-polar disorder.
Medications such as risperdal and paxil ( which are prescribed for it) work in this manner:

In the brain, Nerve A cannot communicate with Nerve B.
Risperdal comes in and bridges the gap between Nerve A and Nerve B.
Nerve A and Nerve B can now communicate.

Adderall does nothing of the sort and I have no idea why your doctor gave it to you. It can even worsen some of the symptonms of bi-polar disorder. Sounds like your doc graduated at the bottom of his class...

Make sure this is the drug you want to be taking. Long term Adderall use has been linked to abnormalities in brain development, similar to those found with long-term cocaine use. Re-visit your doctor explaining to him your (new found) concerns and request a different medication, and perhaps ask him why he gave you the one he did, it's your right to know why you're being told to take a potentially harmful drug on a daily basis that's supposed to HELP your current situation.

I have taken seroquel, risperdal, paxil, prozac, celexa, neurontin, trazadone and a few more I can't remember. The worst I was on was an MAOI called Parnate for two years. I came off of it this past February when Strattera was approved by the FDA. Strattera is used for ADHD and an unlabeled use is for Bipolars. It works really well for me.

Maybe he gave the Adderall to me because he thinks the Bipolar symptoms are under control...and they are for the most part. Maybe he thought I could handle it........I don't know.

But I see what your saying about making the symptoms worse. Phentermine did me the same way.

I'm curious as to why you switched medications so many times. Did you take each of them long enough to properly determine if they were doing their job or did you switch because none of them did? Also, if your doctor thought your symptoms were under control, why would he give your MORE medication for no reason? Did I miss something? Did he give it to you because you had no bi-polar symptoms but still had ADHD symptoms? If he did he is ****ing stupid.

ADHD is very often misdiagnosed when in actuality it is bi-polar disorder. So basically you have one or the other. Bi-polar symptoms entail those of ADHD, so if you had ADHD symptoms, it means your bi-polar medication was not working. You don't take one med for ADHD and one for bi-polar disorder, it's one disorder, you can't have both.

I took the phentermine to aid in weight loss. It's been along time since I've taken it because I was taking an MAOI for two years .........and you can't mix alot of other meds with it....especially anything that speeds you up.

But I did love phentermine while I was on it.

I see my Dr. about every 6 weeks. Before, when I had chronic insomnia, I saw him once a week. He still insists seeing me on a regular baisis due to starting the Strattera this past February.

I looked like **** and felt like **** back when I was not sleeping. I've taken a handful of barbiturates with no effect. I tried anything he wrote for me and he was seriously worried about me at that time. He was afraid my body was going to shut down and no one knew when or where it would happen. He wasn't worried about suppressing REM sleep .....he just wanted me to close my eyes and get any kind of sleep I could. I had one sleep study done, which was unsuccesful as well. I have had several consults with specialist and all agreed it was a bipolar disorder.

As for the differant meds I've taken. Some worked. Some didn't. The ones that did work seemed to make me retarded. Once, after I started taking trazadone I was sitting at a red light in the city..........the light turned green and I didn't have a clue what to do. I have an above average intellect and I was sitting there dumbfounded as to what green meant. After about a minute I decided it was to 'go'. There was a dullness to my eyes. Lifeless look.

1600 mg of Lithium was something I would have loved to have continued. After about 6 months on it I developed morning tremors or the shakes, this being after I would take it at bedtime the night before. I couldn't hold anything without having a (obvious to me) tremor in my hands.

The Parnate combined with Zanaflex at bedtime worked. Although, Parnate is dangerous I continued it until this past February when Strattera came out.

Now I take Strattera and Zanaflex. It seems to work well for me but I have only taken it since February. I'm curious to see what happens as the seasons change.

So, as you see , he replaced a manic/depressive (parnate) medicine with an ADHD (strattera) medicine. I, actually, was shocked he wrote me the adderall for the reasons you've stated. I was asking for phentermine so I could drop the clen but got adderall. I really doubted he would write the phentermine.

I suppose he thinks I'm controlled and can handle it. I am guilty for not bringing the possible/probable side effects to his attention for fearing he would reconsider what he was writing for me. I know that is bad, but I wanted the boost in energy. Grad school is trying to kick my ass, my 12-hour a day job, and working out ,.....leave little to be desired at the end of a very long day.

I know I won't take it forever.....just to get over the hump.

    Rap,

i took adderall for about 3 years--my advice is to go with the smallest dose that works. i was taking 30-40mg/day, which caused me a lot of side effects (insomnia, weight-loss), but when i was on it, it made me feel pretty good, highly focused and slightly euphoric (especially i drank coca-cola for some reason--the two seemed to by synergistic). when taking it for a several days, it would effect my sleep and by the end of the week i would get pretty irritable (from not getting enough sleep during the week). Going off of it resulted in some depression--but once i realized it was from the adderall, it was easier to deal with--that is important to keep in mind, especially when starting on something new--any change in mood is probably related to the medicine. in the end, i stopped taking it regularly--then, when i needed to be a little more focused--i found that a quarter tab (2.5mg) was plenty to sharpen me up and maintain focus (actually and 1/8th tab--if you can break it that small--was often enough to do the job). had i only used this dose the whole time, i think the adderall would have been much more benefitial and i would have had much less side effects.

Take home point -> Use the minimum dose that works to sharpen your mind--the euphoria is tempting but in the end it will cause more problems than it solves.

If you want any more advice on this, you can PM me.

Agreed. This is a general rule for any drug, make sure you are taking no more than you need to get the desired effect. Goes for recreational drugs too...heheh...

I see your point. It doesn't help I have an addictive personality.

I love speed. Faster I go the better I feel. My Dr. told me I was addicted to being manic but the insomnia was the down side. Plus, I was reckless at times (poor decision making, driving to fast, spending money like it grows on trees , etc).

Thank you for your advice. I will remember this. Right now he has me on the XL capsule, so I don't think breaking it in half or quarters is an option.

is it a capsule? i was not aware that they came in capsules. mine were 10mg. round-blue tabs that could be broken in half or quarters fairly easily. the extended release is part of the formulation, they use 4 different salts that become active at different times--so if it is a tablet, breaking it would not significantly effect the timing of the release of the active components.

the tricky part is telling if it is working when you are not taking enought to 'feel' a pronounced effect (that is why i was on 30-40mg/day, as i thought you had to really feel it to be getting something from it). generally, if you are feeling it, you are probably on the high-side of what you need. i would generally my dosage by my ability to keep focused on tasks at work--reading long boring things and keeping alert in meetings, etc. if i was able to keep focused better than i normally would have, then i knew it was enough. if the dose was too high i would get chatty, tend to write very long e-mails (a tendency i have anyway), and i would tend to hyperfocus on things. basically, it made me become obscesive if the dose was too high. i've seen other people who would become very fidgety from too high of a dose (they were unware of it, until i told them about it)--i think it somewhat depends on your personality and your own character traits--it may tend to intensify some of your own behavioral tendencies/traits. a good guage is to listen to the people around you as they will probably be able to observe behavioral changes that you may be blind to. if those close to you (girlfriend, family, etc.) tell you that they are noticing some negative changes--then you should probably reduce your dosage. it is good to make a point of asking them after you've been on it for a month or so--if they have noticed any behavioral changes.

i'd also strongly recommend going off of it on the weekends, and during vacations--you really don't want to be on it every day. sometimes it is nice to just go off and veg-out for a while. being 'on' all the time is exhausting.

and again, keep in mind that any mood-changes that you experience, especially when first taking it are probably the result of the medication.

    good luck with it.

no personal experience, but i read something that basically said that the brain couldn't discern the difference chemically between adderall and cocaine. something to think about.

It is a capsule.......30 mg extended release.

I understand what your saying about taking just enough to focus. This dose is way to high for me. I'm already seeing the down side of coming off of it.

How did you sleep while taking it?

About the brain not being able to discern between adderall and cocaine is complete BS. One's a dopamine agonist, the other is an antagonist. One blocks reuptake while the other down regulates the receptor.

At first the sleep can be a problem--but as your body adjusts to it--it will improve to a degree, though it may effect the depth of sleep that you experience. After I had been on it for a while, I could fall asleep within a few hours of taking it--or if i was tired enough, right after taking it. It takes a while for your system to adjust to the different levels of neurotransmitters in your system--eventually receptors will adjust by up and down regulation and things will even-out to some extent.

The period when first starting on it is tricky as you don't really know what to expect, i.e., what is normal or what you should be feeling--and it may be new mental/emotional territory (you may feel different, and some feelings may be intensified). Once you get to know the drug better and your system adjusts to it, much of the side effects diminish. I eventually figured-out that I had to take it before a certain time of day (take the second dose before 1:00pm) if I wanted to be able to get to sleep before midnight. I had much better control over it because I was taking the 10mg tabs and I could break them in half and titrate my dosage with much more precision than you can with a once-per day 30mg extended release capsule. I'd recommend going back to your doc and asking for the 10mg tabs. 30mg is a very high dose to start someone on who has never taken the med before. As a last resort, you might want to open-up the capsule and divide the pellets/powder (whatever it is that is inside) into 2 or 3 approximately equal piles--and try taking 1/3 of the contents and see how that works, if the dose is too low, then increase it to 1/2 cap, etc.

    Good luck with it.

I wonder if adderall does the same permanent damage to the brain as meth does?

methamphetamine is different from amphetamine (differs by a methyl group). the two are subjectively different in their effects, though they do share some similarities, adderall does not have a lot of the weirdness that meth does. theraputic dosages of adderall are MUCH smaller than what is used by meth-heads, and remains fairly constant over the course of treatment--whereas meth-heads are increasing their dosage and developing tollerance, and often smoking or shooting it--which toasts the receptors and can destroy domamine stem cells. adderall, in the normal theraputic dosage range (around 5-60mg/day) would not be expected to have any of these effects.. main side effect will be weight-loss, nervousness, sleeplessness, etc--and these can be minimized by reducing the dosage to the lowest effective dose.

so you do not become resistant to adderall??

In the past I have become resistant to phentermine....came off of it for about 6 months and it worked again.

once i got settled in on a dose, i never developed a tollerance. i had asked my doc if i would develop tollerance and he told me that it is not common to develop tollerance to the drug in the theraputic dosage range being used. if you continually up your dose, then lower-doses may not be effective--but if you keep the dosage low, you probably won't run into any tollerance issues. just be sure that you stick to low dosages.

after being on it for some time, i was worried about going off of it, after i had used it pretty-much daily for around 3 years. i was able to go off of it without any problem (no withdrawl). i thought that it would be a lot harder than it was to go off. i think the whole addiction model really comes with high dosages, and increasing the dose regularly.

Heres my first post...guess its just a coincidence that I'm on the stuff right now. Craig knows what he's talking about- take just enough to get that little grasp on focus. The first time I ever took the stuff a buddy gave me 2 30mg pills...might has well have been extacty. I was tweaked and talking for 4 hours straight. I guess the ADHD in me atleast let me calm down enough to sleep when I got home. I pretty much cheated and slept through high school...and I didn't know it till after I graduated but I guess it was an attention thing. I take 10mg of AD when I can get it, and usualy take .5mg of xannex a few hours later to even things out. It probably sounds like I'm speed balling like an idiot but its just to get rid of the nervousness....probably still lingering around from the 3 years of ephedrine use. I'll post again later, I know alot of kids that abuse the shxt...but using it right its made all the diferance in the world on my training. On a side note....anyone notice that Adderal doesn't work nearly as well after a cycle? I used to love the stuff but after some Sust it doesn't work quite the same, and Ridilin seems to be a better answer.
