Yankees owner George Steinbrenner died Tuesday morning after suffering a "massive" heart attack, according to the Associated Press.

A person close to Steinbrenner confirmed the 80-year-old's passing to the AP. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not yet made the announcement.

He had previously been reported to be in "extremely critical" condition and had been rushed to a hospital in Tampa, Fla.

Steinbrenner celebrated his 80th birthday on July 4 at his home in Tampa, according to a press release issued last week by the Yankees. He said in the press release through his spokesman Howard J. Rubenstein:

"I want to thank everyone who has sent their good wishes. I am very fortunate to have the love and support of a great family and many, many friends. The Yankees and their fans are a large part of what keeps me going. It means a lot. And I remind everyone that the Fourth of July is also the birthday of our country. We are all lucky to be Americans."

The Yankees have won several World Series trophies under Steinbrenner since he took ownership in 1973.

On his birthday, the team displayed all seven of those trophies, won in 1977, 1978, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2009.

As much as I loathe every aspect of the yankees organization, this is indeed sad to hear. Honestly, it takes a dent out of the Yankee/Red Sox *****ry in a way. Prayers to him and his family.

Crazy enough, he died in the ER I work in here in Tampa...

This is a sad sad day. Second death in the Yankee family in three days.

Its up to Hal and Hank to keep the Yankees on top now.

    **edit**
love or hate the Yankees. Mr.Steinbrenner did as much for baseball as a whole, as our nations pasttime as he did for his Yankees organization. The passion he showed for the sport is rare. He will be missed.

This is indeed a sad day, weather you liked him or hated him, you wish that he owned your team because you knew you would be getting the best. May he rest in peace.
