Companies are using different ratios, such as 4:1:1 or even 8:1:1 (leucine, isoleucine and valine). Is there actual science behind their mythology or are these just based on the assumption that more leucine is better? We will prove why more is not better. What are BCAAs?
Branched chain amino acids, leucine, isoleucine, and valine, are a part of the 9 essential amino acids. They are called essential amino acids because they cannot be synthesized by the human body and must be supplemented by food that contain EAAs (essential amino acids) or by dietary supplements. BCAA plays a crucial role in bodybuilding because they make up about a third of the skeletal muscle tissue in the human body . Without going into an in depth scientific discussion about how BCAA’s work, here are the main benefits of why BCAA are important. They promote protein synthesis and prevent muscle breakdown, therefore leading to muscle repair and growth. It’s really simple as that.
Why 2:1:1 ratio (leucine, isolecuine and valine) over other ratios, such as 4:1:1 or 8:1:1?
There are multiple studies that prove that intake of leucine will deplete the other two bcaas (valine and isoleucine). Well, why is this bad? This is bad for multiple reasons. One is that isoleucine and valine have their own significant benefits to the human body. More importantly, in order to increase protein synthesis and prevent muscle breakdown you need isoleucine and valine along with leucine. Leucine, by itself, will not achieve these goals. Numerous studies illustrate that leucine alone does not promote protein synthesis or prevent protein breakdown. A study conducted by a university in Finland in 2003, “reported that leucine ingestion taken before and after anaerobic running to exhaustion (200mg/kg of body weight) and during a strength training session (100mg/kg of body weight) did not improve performance. “ Another study showed a leucine-induced BCAA antagonism was first observed in animals in 1954, when addition of 3% of L-leucine to a low-protein (9% casein) diet was found to cause marked growth depression in rats that could be partially overcome by a supplement of isoleucine (91). Subsequently, Benton et al (14) observed that the growth depression caused by addition of 3% leucine to the diet was largely overcome when supplements of both isoleucine and valine were provided. These observations indicated that excess leucine increased the requirement for isoleucine and valine in the rat.
To prove why 2:1:1 ratio is better than other ratios of BCAA there are three main factors.
1. In order to achieve protein synthesis and prevent protein breakdown, the human body needs all three BCAA’s. Recent clinical research shows that “chronic free leucine supplementation alone did not improve lean body or muscle mass during resistance training or in elderly, whereas it was able to limit weight loss induced by malnutrition. Leucine-rich amino acid mixture or proteins appeared more efficient than leucine alone to improve muscle mass and performance, suggesting that the efficacy of leucine depends nevertheless on the presence of other amino acids.”
2. There are tons of studies done on BCAA’s but majority of them are done on the ratio of 2:1:1. In fact, “the 2:1:1 ratio appears often in animal protein” .
3. More is not better. Why? The rate of depletion of valine and isoleucine is dependant on the amount of leucine introduced to the body. Due to the depletion of the other two BCAA’s (valine and isoleucine) when leucine is introduced into the body, more leucine would increase the rate of depletion. Which means that the actual benefits of the BCAAs will be neglected?
Another important component of this new AMINO ACID product is REAL free form amino acids from silk worms.
Silk amino acids are the precise ratio of amino acids found in the cocoon of the silk worm. The naturally occurring peptide form of silk amino acids are arranged in a very unique sequence to form the bioactive peptide called sericin. In vitro studies illustrate many benefits of sericin such as having mitogenic properties.
The free form amino acids found in the silk amino acids are mainly comprised of alanine, glycine, serine, valine, and threonine, which make up more than 90% of the amino acid profile found in silk worms. However, other free form amino acids found in the silk worms play a crucial role in the make up of the amino acid profile found in the cocoon of the silk worm. Recent in vivo study of free form silk amino acids using mice conducted by Chungbuk National University resulted in some amazing findings. To sum up the study, they used a forced swimming test in mice with one control group and 3 other groups taking the SAA in three different doses. The group taking the SAA increased maximum swimming time significantly compared to the control group, which is an indication of enhanced basic physical strength. Various tests were done which illustrates that the groups taking the SAA increased their muscle glycogen levels, increased the mass of muscles, and increased anti-oxidant activity (muscle preserving). In addition to these findings, it was also noted that the groups taking the “SAA not only near-fully reversed the increase in exercised induced corticosterone, but also recovered testosterone to a level higher than that of the normal control” .

I've never bought these special amino acid products, I've always went with whey protein.. Maybe this will change it!

Very interesting write up. I have seen a lot about the SAA's recently. GoHard, aminos are great around your workout for the fact that they can immediately be used as part of the ATP energy chain. No complex conversion or digestion needed just need to be absorbed through the intestinal wall and put to use immediately this also lowers the cortisol response of the workout. Certainly whey is sufficient post workout but pre and intra workout I like my aminos.
