    shoulder problem

I have this issue with my shoulder that everytime i bench it starts to hurt. It started about three years ago when i first hurt it. It was so bad i couldnt bench the bar. I went to the Dr and he told me nothing was torn. I didn't bench for six months. It felt better when i started benching again but it came back. It is not a severe as before. It just hurts. Its at the bottom part of the lift that makes it hurt. Anyone have this issue before and what did you do to help it?

How much of a warm up do you use, and do you feel it with really light weight?
Maybe try dumbells instead of the straight bar for a while.

i can still feel it with light weight just not as bad. I have done DB but it still is there. Im trying to get back into powerlifting but this shoulder is keeping me back. Its almost to the point where im gunna say screw it and if it goes it goes because im sick of having to stop benching all the time.

I was explaining this to another lifter as well. I wonder if you have pec tendonitis. This is pretty common for lifters and even though nothing is torn will cause discomfort while pressing. I have had this bad, numerous times.Push your palms together right now like you are going to crush something in your hands. Does it hurt where your chest ties into your delts, almost in your armpit? If so then this is most likely tendonitis. I have had it so that I could not bench for a long period of time. Through trial and error I will tell you what helps. Eliminate max effort presses and grinders. I found that if I kept a rep or two left in the tank then the issue slowly went away until it was unnoticable. As soon as I grinded out a slow rep, the issue flared up instantly. I pushed a hard rep with the issue there and actually tore something. I was out for weeks. Bottom line is if something hurts, back off. Hope this helps to some degree.

^this is your best bet. Sometimes things take a while to heal and its always worth the wait. Is your doctor a family doctor or have you seen a specialist?

It was the sports dr. It might be pec tendonitis bc it usually does start hurting more when im pushing those extra reps. I still feel it when doing lighter weights but not even close to what it feels like when i do heavier. I don't feel it when i do my board presses though. I may continue to do those and back off full benching and see if it feels better in a month or two. The thing that gets me is it did feel better every other time untill i started going heavy then it acted up again. Is this somthing that will always occur from time to time?

It sounds like a trigger point. I couldn't bench at all until I had mine released. Now it is all good. It will be a sensitive knot like mass right where your pec and delt meet. Moderate to heavy pressure to the point should do the trick. Also check your traps and back because they refer pain to different areas than where they are located, including the shoulders. You will know when you hit them because they hurt like hell and shoot pain throughout your body. Learning to locate and release trigger points will keep you lifting for many years to come. I hope this helps, it saved my lifting career.

Could be that something is just a little out of line and an adjustment by a good chiropractor may help.

Also switching up your grip up a bit may help too... depending on how wide your grip is a lot of times bringing it in a bit can relieve some stress on the shoulders
