How exactly do you propose doing this? The only way I could see this as a possibility is if your "non-barbell" training includes some training with heavy strongman exercises (heavy tire flips, farmer's walk, stones, etc...). I think you have to include some heavy lifting of some type to build or maintain maximum strength.
