September 1st I will be starting a new OLYMPUS LABS sponsored cycle. For those of you who followed my previous log, I used pretty much this same cycle to prepare for the USPA Nationals on July 19th. I benched 622 lbs in that meet in the 181 lb weight class. I weighed in at 177 lbs for the meet. On September 1, 2014 I will begin a new cycle in preparation for the IPL World Championships in November in Las Vegas. I will again be competing in the 181 lb weight class - bench press only. Just as I did in previous logs, I will be posting some vids of my bench training to show my progress. As far as PH's, I will be following pretty much the same cycle as before. Again, I want to thank Olympus Labs for their support and fabulous products. I'm hoping to put up some really big numbers in the next 12 months with support from Olympus Labs.

September 1, 2014 - first day on cycle. Super excited to hit the gym after work. As you will find out as this log progresses, my main priority is getting a bigger bench. Everything else is secondary. All my workouts are geared towards increasing my bench press. Even my back, shoulders, and arm workouts are focused on what I need to do to increase my bench at that particular time in my training cycle. My workouts are somewhat different from most powerlifters due to age (49) and injuries (4 shoulder surgeries). Most of my non-bench exercises are done with lighter weights due to shoulder issues, while my bench work is usually done with heavy weight. But over the years I have found this to be effective. Most people don't realize how important the traps, shoulders (rear delts in particular), and triceps are. Those muscle groups are actually more important than the pecs in getting a big bench. My back & shoulder day is the longest workout of the week. Here is how today went
1) Lat Pulldowns - total of 12 sets
2) Barbell Shrugs - 6 sets - worked up to 635 for 5 reps on last set
3) Dumbbell Shrugs - drop set - 125 lb - 10, 115 lb - 8, 105 lb - 8, 95lb - 8 - this drop set immediately followed the barbell shrugs with no rest between exercises
5) Arnold Press - on free motion cable machine
90 - 6, 100 - 6, 110-6, 120 - 6, 130-4, 120-54, 110 - 4, 100 - 5, 90 -6 - no rest at all between sets
6) Front Cable Raise (single arm) - 6 sets total
7) Standing Rear cable raises (on cable crossover) - 9 sets total from 3 different angles
8) Side dumbbell raises - 4 sets

Holy hell, nice benching!

I agree, the upper back is so integral to Bench. I have been focusing heavy on posterior delts, triceps and traps lately and I can tell a huge difference in my Bench.

My go to moves for rear delts and Face Pulls, heavy one arm DB rows, and rear "delt destroyers" :)

Right shoulder was extremely sore today. Did my best to ignore it. Been bothering me for 2 weeks now. Despite the shoulder, had a good bench workout as I had my best spotter. Went to the gym to finish up triceps - did roughly 20 sets for triceps to finish the workout.

Shoulders - just did a light shoulder workout as I have a heavy bench workout scheduled for Saturday - Didn't want to tax the shoulders too much as I wanted to save it for Saturday. I'll post a vid of Saturday's bench training - will be my last workout with a 2-board before the meet. Hoping to go up to 815 - maybe a little higher.

Sept 20, 2014 - Chest & Triceps - Heavy bench day! had my 2 spotters and had a great bench work out ! I wanted to go as heavy as possible today since this was my last workout using a 2-Board before my meet. All benching was done off of a 2-Board except for the last set of 800 lbs which was done off of a 1.5-Board
Bench
1. 405 - 3
2. 500 - 1
3. 585 - 1
4. 635 - 1
5. 675 - 1
6. 725 - 1
7. 765 - 1
8. 795 - 1
9. 825 - 1

10. 800 - 1 - this set was done off a 1.5-board - all other sets done off a 2-Board

After Benching went, went to the gym and finished my chest workout with 8 sets pec-decs, 6 sets on freemotion cable press machine, and roughly 20 sets total for triceps. Workout felt FANTASTIC today. In retrospect, I should have tried at least one set higher than the 825 off a 2-board. My bench training will enter new phase - all benching will be off a 1.5-Board for the next 3 weeks before dropping down to a 1-board. I'm about 6 weeks out from my meet in November in Las Vegas, and my workouts are going great to this point. As long as my shoulder holds up, I'm hoping to put up some big numbers in November!

October 22, 2014 - Heavy Bench Day - really worked on my form and getting down to a 1-Board. Weights felt great -even last set at 725 felt great. These last two weeks before the world championships I will concentrate on my form. Body weight right now is 190.0 lbs. I will probably try to drop 2-3 lbs in the next 2 weeks to get down to around 187 the day before weigh-in. It should be fairly easy to lose7 lbs of water weight last 24 hours before weigh-in to get down to 181 lbs.

October 26, 2014 - After today's workout, I will only have one more bench workout before the World Championships. Worked off of a 1-Board today. Really concentrating on my form - good touch on the board, but staying down on bench, even lockout with both arms. Worked up to 745 lbs off a 1-Board. Felt good, probably could have gone 20-40 lbs higher, but only had 1 spotter today. Body weight is still at 190.0 lbs (morning weigh-in). I want to lose 3 lbs by in the next 8 days. I would like to weigh 187 or less when I leave for Las Vegas on Monday November 3rd. My plan is to not eat or drink anything at all on Monday November 3rd. Weigh-in is Tuesday November 4th. Not eating/drinking at all the day before weigh-in is usually good for a 7 lb weight loss which would put me right at 181 for weigh-in. Anyway, this is how my bench workout went today:
Bench
1. 405 - 3 reps - 2-Board
2. 505 - 1 reps - 2 board
3. 555 - 1 reps - 1.5 board
4. 605 - 1 rep - 1 board
5. 675 - 1 rep - 1 board
6. 725 - 1 rep - 1 board
7. 745 - 1 rep - 1-Board

October 29, 2014 - Body weight was 190.0lbs - 6 days out from weigh-in and 7 days out until the meet. Toady was my last bench workout before the World Championships. Benched with only 2 full days rest since last bench workout. I usually like a minimum of 3 to 4 days rest between bench workouts, but today was the day my spotter could help. I didn't want to go too heavy as the meet is only a week out. Just wanted to concentrate on my form and work up tp some decent weights.
Bench
1. 405 lbs - 3 reps off a 2-Board
2. 505 lbs - 1 rep off a 2-Board
3. 575 lbs - 1 rep off a 1.5-Board
4. 635 lbs - 1 rep off a 1-Board

5. 675 lbs - 1 rep off a 1-Board

November 8, 2014 - IPL World Championship results - no way to sugar coat it - was my worst meet in 10 years. I was feeling great going into the meet and even the warm-ups at the meet went good. I opened with 622 lbs - this was equal to my best lift at Nationals in July. Obviously, I was very disappointed in my performance, but I'll use this failure as motivation for my next meet. I'll review the meet video and analyze what I did wrong and what I could have done better. I also go over my training log. Try to find some areas that I can work on.
1st Attempt - lost it on the way down. I let the bar drift to far forward and dumped it.
2nd Attempt - felt like it was a good lift, but got red lighted.

3rd Attempt - again it felt like a good lift - even better than the second attempt, but got red lighted again.

Can't do anything about it at this point but move on and start training harder! Just adds a little more fuel to the fire!

Just found this thread; read the whole thing and really enjoyed the detail in your log. Really sucks they called you for that, but you were definitely good for a nice PR this meet if your training was any indicator. High 6s all day, at least. Great work, and hopefully you'll have another opportunity before too long to get back on the platform.

Thanks for the kind words. I've already begun my PCT along with a new training cycle. Probably sometime in February I will start another PH cycle. I'll time that with a meet in late March or April.

I'm in pretty much the exact same boat, cycle-wise. Hoping to do a local meet around the end of march (and in PCT now).

In that video of you lifting 622 for the first time at the previous comp, the judge giving the press command (bald, white mustache) - his name is Jim, and he's a hell of a guy to lift around. If you ever get the chance to talk to him again, he has a ton of passion for the sport. I've been judged by him, and I've lifted in the same flights as him at other meets (all USPA), and he's just a blast.

All the judges were good guys. I talked to them both before and after the meet. Sometimes things just don't work out the way you would like. Nothing I can do but work harder for the next meet.

Oh I meant the meet before this cycle's meet. But yeah, some days it really doesn't seem to come together. So many things can go wrong.
