    Oats in shake?


    I know this is prob gonna make me look really dumb but I just started to eat plain rolled oats, instant kind. Now this morning i put em in the microwave as the directions stated and than put them in the blender with my protein powder ect. when i was finished i could barely drink the damn thing because it was sooo thick. I know i used enough skim milk for it so how do you guys mix yours in and do you eat them before like i did?

    So, you cooked the oats before putting them in your shake?

    I blend mine, uncooked. Of course, the blending cuts the oats down into a finer material, which will alter affects on insulin and such (more surface area - quicker digestion).

    Side note: One time I decided to try the oats unblended in a PWO shake. After my workout, I got in my truck and took a big swig of my shake. As soon as the whole oats hit my mouth, I threw up everywhere! I can't drink stuff that has that kind of texture, especially after a workout.

    alright thanks....i was pretty sure when i went to drink it that i did something wrong because i know so many guys on here use oats in there shakes and i figured it cant be like this. After my workout today ill try it uncooked in the blender and see how that goes!

    what i normally do is soak my oats in a bowl of water for about an hour before i ad them to my shake. I blend my protein first and then add the oats and let them mix up nice. Its def thicker but i like it...its feels more filling and satisfying that. I find that it helps to drink it out of a shaker cup, that way you can give it a couple shakes in between gulps so all the oats dont settle to the bottom.

    I use Stop and Shop Old Fashion oats. I cook them first and then add them to 20 ounces of water and two scoops of whey powder. I blend for about 3 minutes.

    I tried the uncooked whole rolled oats and that didn't agree with my stomach.

    I grind uncooked rolled oats into a powder and simply add to my protein powder and shake. Oats tend to settle to the bottom so shake and swirl as you drink.

    While we are on the topic of oats and protein, does anyone else have concern about denaturing protein by adding it to cooked oatmeal? I usually have 1/2C with ~30g of protein and fruit.

    3/4 cup of oats 2 servings of protein, water stir with a spoon drink it down. Ya'll are little girls cooking and grinding and soaking.

    thats exactly what i did, but it was so thick i could barely drink it...hmmm didnt agree with your stomach

    with 20 ounces of water a 1/2 cup of oats is not very thick (at least to me).

    I have made the PWO shake with a full cup of oats and 20 ounces of water...that is thick...but I still like it.

    I make my shakes the night before I lift, bring it to work and then the gym. Usually it is pretty cold when I drink it.

    Maybe your shake was too warm???

    When did you make it?

    Yeah i used a whole cup of oats and about 20 oz of skim milk and i cooked the oats and put em in the blender about 1 minute afterwards so they were still hot. I added some ice but it still wasnt cold so maybe thats another reason for it being so thick and foamy.

    uncooked is the way to go the only thing i hate i when the oats settle to the bottom if you dont drink it right away

    If I'm using uncooked oats, I'll put them in the shake cup with water for about an hour so they'll absorb the water and get soft.....then throw in my protein powder and other additives (bulk powders).

    Most of the time I user plain "instant oats" which isn't as good but it's quick.

    Coffee bean grinder works like magic. Just get regular rolled oats and grind a pound or two up and put in a spare container so when you need to make shakes everything is handy and ready to go.

    Don't worry about it, especially if you are nuking the oatmeal then adding the protein powder AFTER the oats are already cooked.

    was about to say it! I've been doing this for a LONG time, in the coffee grinder. You put uncooked old fashioned oats in the grinder and just grind it for a few seconds and it turns into powder.
    definitely the way to go.

    I eat the oats straight off the stalks and use it the stalks to pick my teeth afterwards. Then I kill the nearby cow for protein after sucking the milk outta it.

    I just toss a cup or so of Quaker Oats into my blender along with milk & protein powder, blend a bit and toss it down the hatch.

    One of my usual drinks includes:

    1 cup Quaker Oats
    1.5 cups Non-fat milk
    2 scoops whey protein
    1 serving of straberry bannana yogurt
    1 tbsp peanut butter

    I assume most of us use oats (in place of other more refined carbs) to control insulin response and possibly allow for sustained energy.

    When we blend our oats (depending on how long/fine you blend the material), that dramatically cuts down on the surface area of the material and I would assume that would mean MUCH quicker digestion. So, are we really doing oats justice by blending? I mean, if I blend my oats into a fine powder, how is that much different than say powdered malto?

    oats in a blender with my usual after workout shake. Thats my breakfast! Don't have time for eggs and such. Plus there is a lot of stuff in my shake. Blend a little longer otherwise it would be like mud.

    Changing the shape and size of oats does not have any affect on absorption. Bobo addressed this a long time ago. I'd look for the thread but can't right now. Not only that but I remember him saying most absorption occurs in the small intestine anyhow so the speed of absorption is meaningless.

    i had the same problem tryin to down a shake with oats...its like quick dry cement.....IMO try puttin 3-5 ice cubes in before the oats....it helps dice up the oats better and really helps with the thickness especially if your makin them awhile before drinkin..

    when all else fails hold your nose closed and down it!!!

    Yes, tossing a few ice cubes along with the other stuff into the blender helps. It basically "suspends" your oats do they all dont sink to the bottom.

    i know this is a little off the current topic, but i just cant get used to the taste/texture of cottage cheese. Ive tried it with fruit and its ok but i still dont enjoy it. My question is what do you think about throwing some cottage cheese in the blender with some protein powder. Ill prob do this in the evening.

    If you dont mind carbs you can make some good tastin pancakes:

    1/2 cup oats (ground)
    1/2 cup f.f.c.c.
    4 egg whites

    toss in the blender for a matter of seconds of just use a handheld blender. Also, one of those blender bottles that nutra has that has the stainless ball in it might work well!

    Anyways...that makes some mean pancakes. If you dont want carbs, try:

    -fat free cottage cheese with some walden farms 0 calories fruit spreads

    -f.f.c.c. with some sugar free maple syrup
