  1. I'm going to sign up for judo Monday

I've been researching different options in my area, and it looks like I'll be taking Judo here starting Monday. It's a good club, and cheap, $20/month, which is important, as I'm unemployed right now.

I was really torn between that and a Kyokushin school. Maybe later I can do both. What do you guys think? I just want it to be full force and effective.

  2. I started Judo back in January...switched over from Traditional JJ at the same place, and absolutely love it. Its a great workout and your get to spar (randori). I'm hoping to enter some tournaments this fall....as soon as I get out of the open weight division.

Usually they don't let the white belts do randori for a couple of weeks but since i came from JJ they let me do it the first night. I was freaking dying from a cardio perspective. its tough having to pick yourself up off the mat all night long. Now I can get 5 or 6 matches in without taking a break.

Best of luck and remember to stay loose.

  5. thanks, you too!

Yeah, the dude's probably just some loser on house arrest.

QUIT MAKING HORRIBLE POSTS AROUND HERE. You are not funny. Starting a thread where you beg the board for forgiveness makes you look 10x more pathetic too.

  8. I wish that punk would shut his face he is ruining the board

So did you sign up? If so, what did you think?

  15. No, Monday I got a spur of the moment gig working security on a ship that came into port, so that was Mon and Tues night. I was planning on going tonight, but Weds I pinched a nerve in my upper back something wicked. So bad I took maybe the 20th Advil in my life. Ugh. So call it this Monday. But I'm temped to go in tonight just to pay and sign up, without hitting the class.

  16. Uggggggggh

  17. Just stay in bed.

  18. Why? I'm not under house arrest.

How are the mats there? My place is in the process of getting new ones, which means the current ones are pretty old. Falling isnt that bad but the mats spread apart and I'm constantly catching my toes. This sport is awful on your feet. Best of luck and do your best not to get caught in randori with an ippon seo nagi from a black belt... Getting thrown with that one sucks.

  28. Mats are VERY nice. Blue rubberized canvas covered foam that velcro's together hard, with canvas covering over it all. Since I show my n00bness in botched landings all the time, it's jarring as hell, but non-painful.

I participated in my first randori on Friday night, my second class. I watched a bit, then asked someone about it. They said 'go for a black belt, or watch and see who the small people pick, because that person will be a bit kinder'. I decided to test that theory, and it was oh-so-true. The two black belts were very gentle when thEy threw me, the white belts, um, no. Ow.

It's pretty physically challenging. Fridays class tore me up. I haven't done any fighting for around 10 years, when I got my ass kicked for 3 months in Israel. I recover a lot slower now, dammit.

  29. lol..yeah, stay away from white belts. I was lucky and paired up with a guy who came over from JJ so we both new a bunch of throws; the other guys will throw you at all sorts of weird angles.

A little trick that helped me, especially against the black belts...use left handed throws. Most white belts will only do right handed so they guard against them. But if you catch them with one, be ready for the consequences!
