Poll: would you still fight even after an eye injury?

Would you guys still fight even after an eye injury?

  1. Would you guys still fight even after an eye injury?

Basically I injured one of my eyes in my first mixed fight. I have some scar tissue on my retina right in the center of my field of vision. It distorts the vision in my one eye. It's not noticeable however and I can still live a normal life. The doctor lady told me I shouldn't fight anymore because if I injure my other eye the same way then it would be noticeable and I would not be allowed to drive.
So what would you guys do? I still really want to fight. My coach seems to want to fight. I'm fighting an exhibition match in a month with no kicks or punches to the face. Only open palm strikes to the face.

So how did I do in my first fight? I lost. My friend just got the DVD of it and he says I was totally winning the fight. I would punch and kick the guy and he kept running away. I kept trying to grab him but I couldn't catch him. Then I got hit in the eye with some lucky loopy ass haymacker, after that I couldn't see ****. I got hit with another big shot and fell down. Then he was punching me on the ground I was kind of out of it but I was still trying to grab ahold of him, then they stopped it.
I want to borrow the DVD from him but he's studying this guy on it who he's fighting for the Amaetur Heavy Weight title in a couple weeks.

  2. I dont know if that is wise. I had a fractured eye socket, broken upper and lower jaws and i have a few plates still in my face. Its been a year and i got into a street fight with this ex con well i was doing good until i got caught with a 3-4 punch combo, not enough to daze me but I just had to call it quits right there. I know i could do even worse damage to myself. So I only fight if i need to. If it wasnt for my accident and surgeries I would be training in Bj Penn's gym right now.

  3. If I was in danger of losing my vision in that eye, then I would stop fighting. I know a few people that have been hit in the eye and they all say that it is the scariest thing that has happened to them while fighting/training. I hope that I never have to experience something of that magnitude and I hope that you are able to continue your pursuit whther it is in fighting or teaching.

  4. I'm surprised you could still be a licensed fighter or even pass the prefight medical test. I have a detached retina from a motorcycle and as a result could never get a fighter's license as the medical evaluations always caught it. Even though your urge to fight may be overwhelming, in the end you know it's best not to.

  5. I wouldn't risk it. I don't think you should do the exhibition match either. Open palm strikes could easily result in an eye poke. I think you should do some research, and go to a few doctors and get a few opinions. Unless a doctor tells you differently from the doctor you've already met with then you should quit fighting.

What is your vision like in that eye? Did you lose some periphial?

Yes I'm supposed to see a retina specialist on tuesday. They want to make sure everything is ok still. I know there is a surgery that can lift the scar tissue from the retina. I have not talked to anyone about that.

As for the exhibition match I want to do it because my teacher is promoting the event, and I want to help out. Originally I told him I could still do amateur muay thai, with head gear and shin guards and stuff. That would be safer. But I don't know, he wants me to do mixed with this guy. I'm sure it will just wind up being a grappling match.

I do value you guy's opinions, I haven't made up my mind what I want to do yet.

  8. not worth the risk. I stopped competing in MMA a long time ago. Now I just compete in submission wrestling and jiu-jitsu. Thats plenty fun for me.

Exactly what I was going to say.

Vision is significantly impaired in that eye. Closing the other eye and holding my hand six inches from my nose I can see about 2.5" in either direction. Obviously with both eyes it's not too bad but leftside peripheral vision is absent.

  11. That is freaky. I have really bad eyesight (contacts), and I can tell you from stumbling around without lenses/glasses, you do not want to go there.

  12. I wouldnt chance it myself, esp if your 3-d or periferal perception is altered.

  13. No it's not that just a blurry spot in the center of vision when I cover my other eye. There was no detachment just some scar tissue blurring it.
I will probably never do full contact. I'll probably just help train with everybody and show up at their fights to show my support.

I got stabbed in the eye with a wooden kendo sword. It was scary as hell. I've been shy about sparring people with the swords since. I almost pierced the eyeball and I had to get taken to the emergy room. It was pretty gnarly.

I don't think you'll be able to enjoy MMA if you're worried about your vision. Just hang it up or get into competitive ju-jitsu or wrestling.
