I am a fighter in MMA, and when it comes to training, I can't emphasize enough the importance of stamina and variation. Make sure he either runs or uses a bicycle and teach him to vary his speeds in an effort to make sure that he does not get used to particular pattern. When it comes to building of muscle, try low reps (1-5) with heavy weight, this will induce sarcoplasmic hypertrophy. This type of weight tranning will build the non-contractile elements of muscle, which in turn means more endurance and quickness.
