Sleep hygiene is the first thing should be address with every single person. Many people overlook the pivotal role of adrenal glands, and their secretions of cortisol and neurotransmitters. If you do not sleep the body does not heal, hormones do not recycle properly, insulin levels rise, immune system decreases, creates cortisol imbalances, liver cannot detoxify, and the list goes on. Sleep deprivation is a huge issue with anyone who has health issues; this is not just the number of hours we sleep, but the quality of sleep. For example, when you go to sleep you plug your cell phone in the wall and when you wake up it's 100% charged, right? When we go to bed we put our bodies on recharge like a phone, but many people are waking up with only 5-10% charge. Now we need to have the 5-10% to last us the entire day, but unfortunately it will not happen. The body compensates not by running off its primary source (cortisol), but it will run off its secondary source (adrenaline). As cortisol drops, your adrenaline with pick up to make up the difference. This person will be hard to wake in the morning feeling unrefreshed, will want to nap sometime between 1-4pm, but will be off to the races with a second wind at dinner time. We commonly call this the "vampire pattern" or reverse circadian rhyme. Generally, these people are fatigued but will have high anxiety. Through proper modulation of neurotransmitters (braking and gas system) as well as the adrenal glands the body will start to return to its natural homeostasis where healing begins. Often the focus is on cortisol, but the neurotransmitters secreted by the adrenal glands are overlooked. If both are not addressed together, you will not achieve the desired therapeutic outcome
