I went to donate blood to keep my rbc down and my blood iron levels were at 20.3. Any ideas on how to get that down so I can donate?

Eliminate as many B Vitamins from your diet as possible.

For some grapefruit juice will help.

I went back today and my test came back 19.7 the cut off is 19. They had me talk to a doctor which basically said to lay off iron rich foods and come back in a month. If it is not down at that time he said to go to my primary doctor. He asked about past blood work and since I had a full cbc done in October and everything was in range he was not too worried. Also I have been eating about five Atkins bars a day for almost two months do you know each one of them has 15% of your dang daily Iron! That and the 400 grams of protein a day might be a bit too much.

Be careful with this..I had a similar problem. High iron levels along with elevated liver enzymes. I was told I had signs of hemochromatosis, it's when the body has issues with removing iron from the blood, which is very unhealthy for vital organs.

I was sent to a specialist and put through a series of tests. The worst one was the liver biopsy. 4 months later my levels retuned to normal, I had cut out all red meat, iron rich foods, caffeine and alcohol.

Where is your ferritin levels? When proper evaluating iron metabolism and storage you need to look at the whole clinical picture.

My mother has iron deficiency

My father's body doesn't filter it out if his blood naturally so he has to let blood weekly.

I'm not leaning either way yet thankfully.

Increase your Calcium intake to hinder iron absorption.

My friend has hemochromatosis. He is required to have a monthly bloodletting to resolve this. They take a lot of his blood and basically throw it out.He also does things like drinking coffee after a meal, which will somehow lower your iron absorption. Once you're normalized, I'm sure you can donate.
