LEFT SHOULDER PAIN WHEN LIFTING

Hi guys,

I have been in the gym now for almost 3 years. I have made some good gains in my shoulders and it was one of my favourite workouts of the week.

I stopped going to the gym for other reasons for about 5 months and started back again last month. After about 10 mins into my shoulder excercise, i noticed my left shoulder started to get very sore and almost felt as though it had locked up. I couldnt raise my left hand above my head it was that sore. I started the weights very light as well so definitely wasn't from using too heavy of weights. I thought id leave it until the next week and see.

Went back again over last couple of weeks and getting the exact same problem. Im not sure what this could be? It isnt sore any other time apart from when i lift. Even f i leave it for 20 mins it seems to go away and then will come back after another set.

Can anyone help or have any similar experience? Dont want to go to the pysio if its something i can fix myself.

Thanks guys!

It DEFINITELY sounds like you need to go to the doctor. It could be a number of things from rotator cuff injury (most common), to bursitis, to a labrum tear. If it is bothering you so bad that you can't even lift your arm, play it safe and go to the doctor. If you injure it bad enough then you might not be able to lift for months; however, if you get it checked out and fixed you won't get nearly as injured and be able to be back in the gym much sooner.

It could be any number of things. The first would be to determine WHAT it is. From there, what you do will depend on the issue and its extent. A doctor is not going to help much - the best person to see would be a sports physio/physical therapist - they can do tests and also should ask comprehensive questions, to be able to "diagnose" the issue (any time I have performed such assessments on anyone, I can pretty much almost always pinpoint what it is). If you know what you're doing, you can often "rehab" it yourself... Otherwise, you can always just keep training and adapt depending on the pain, etc., although not always the most advisable thing. Often what can seem like a "minor" pain becomes something major later on and pain that is not DOMS is always indicative of something... Bear in mind also that rehabbed or not, the issue can flare up again over time, but, if a more serious issue and it is not taken into consideration, can lead to other injuries and "breakdown" in the body...

Dr is going to give you the script to get a MRI- review the results and then suggest a specialist - depending on your ins if you need a referral or not they will suggest a pys.

i had the pain as well, did upright rows and thought it was the R cuf- turns out the cartiliage between the bones is gone and it bone scraping against bone. othro into the shoulder to scrap away both ends to relieve the pain and inflamation.

but to add to Rosie, she is right it could be a number of things- please just go- even if it feels better tomorrow, bro trust me and listen to her the further breakdown it will cause isnt worth it.

good luck

Hey bro, you should try stopping shoulder press for a bit. Try other exercises for about a month and see how you feel.

Experience: lifting for 8 years and 2 years ago broke my shoulder from going too heavy on a dumbell shoulder press. I'm back to 100% now. PM me if you have any questions.

Get better bro.

I would also recommend really focusing on your stretches. Make that top top priority before you start lifting. Maybe even take 20 minutes before each workout. I know you wanna get right to lifting and get that feel good feelings going. But getting better comes first.

Best of luck
