Heart failure. He was diagnosed with congestive heart failure back in September.
Visited him for a week around Xmas - found out his heart declined a surprising amount (in it's ability to pump blood out) between Sept and Dec.
I knew it would eventually give out.
Doesn't make it any easier though.
It's cliche - but during times like this you find out who your real friends are. I had several take a whole day off work to be at the funeral with me.
I've never cried so much in my entire life. Military funerals are so sad.
