Acceptable place for a 'first date' (if you even want to call it that)

I'm going to be at my parent's house this weekend, and I made plans to get together with a girl I used to date in high school. I was thinking we could just go grab a cup of coffee at a starbucks, catch up (I haven't seen or been in touch with her since High School), and take it from there.

Anyhow, my father thinks I should treat her out to dinner at a nice restaurant. (WTF?) This seems a little too much too soon to me, and I would think this would intimidate her into thinking I'm expecting too much from this date. I'm really just looking forward to seeing her again, see how she's been doing since high school, and just 'catch up'. It's not an objective of mine 'getting a piece' or develop a relationship with this girl, but at the same time have no issues if things lead in that direction.


I don't think I will take my dad's suggestion, and he's probably gonna b!tch at me (because his suggestions tend more to be orders). Just wondering what some of the other AM members find acceptable for such an occasion?

You can always start spending money on a girl but once you start they will think you don't like them as much if you suddenly stop or do it less and less.

Sometimes chicks are weird, too. My only concern w/ the coffee shop is that it "can" be seen as too "friendish" if you don't actually at least make it obvious you're interested in the poon.

Well, the poon is tertiary in this case. I'm not one to screw, nut, and bolt, and I don't want to jump into a serious relationship with someone who lives 3 hours away unless she convinces me she's worth it (LDR's are not fun).

When I dated this girl in HS, I took her out to the movies. I think that killed whatever we might have had going at the time:

Upon entering the theater, I noticed that several of my boys just so happened to be seeing the same movie I took her to. We were welcomed by something along the lines of "Woot! Woot! Stick in her Sinner!". I don't think that helped.
