Can drinking alcohol kill your gains? Mind you I'm not natural, been cycling for a year now and lifting 5-6 days a week. I don't abuse alcohol but a couple nights a week to get a nice buzz going. Not getting **** faced. I see many different discussions on this subject and want to know what everyone thinks

If you have to ask then there's potential for abuse.

Drinking for a buzz a few nights a week isn't healthy, IMO.

Not to say alcohol is all bad, but it is an addictive drug.

Science has proven that it will slow down protein synthesis as much as 70 %. Key words "Slow down."

Will it kill your gains? No! It can keep you from reaching your full potential though depending how heavy of a drinker you are. If you drink in moderation it will be harder to cut bodyfat but you will still continue to build muscle. The more frequently you drink alcohol the slower your muscle growth will be. A person who hits the gym as much as you do and eats right will continue to have nice gains. Plus on top of it you are on a cycle which is a huge advantage over someone who drinks and does not cycle. Keep focusing on a solid diet and workout routine and its not even an issue for you. The only thing that could happen is you may not win a contest if you consume alcohol. What this all comes down to is how high you have set your own personal goals. Want to get your pro card? Do not drink.

At most it's 2 glasses of wine or a couple beers. Like I said not getting **** faced. Just some drinks with the fiance at night. And yeah I eat a **** ton, lift a lot, and I'm cycling. Haven't noticed any problems gaining muscle but figured I would ask. Didn't know if it hindered muscle growth or killed your gains. You pretty much cleared it up.

You are completely fine man. Wouldn't even lose sleep over this. Such a fine line you are speaking about that would make any difference at all. That is why I mentioned getting your pro card. Only reason to not consume alcohol at all in your position. Two glasses of red dry wine actually is beneficial to gains.

And to the person who said theres potential for abuse, if you actually read my question then you would have seen I said its in moderation.

Don't listen to that poster. Enjoy your time with your girlfriend and a couple glasses of wine. You will benefit from it. You know what amazes me? Some of my best days in the gym have been after a night of a couple glasses of wine and a nice dinner with the woman in my life also. Do I abuse alcohol? No. But hey a little here and there never hurt anyone especially red wine.

Right on, man. Go moderately catch your tri-weekly buzz and disregard my opinion.

Hey, I enjoy my Miller High Life 3 nights a week. I can't do Lime-ritas, though. That stuff is toxic to me.

There is a thread here where I posted an article from the M&M Chemically Correct Series my Caleb Stone. At the cellular level it can disrupt many biological system processrs like protein synthesis and insulin/glycogen managrment and liposis and the likes.

This topic has been brought up umpteen times with the same hyperbole about alcoholics and abuse and others' disciplines and dedication and your status as a loser because you drink anything at all.

As an alcoholic I can tell you that it is very bad for my health because I abuse alcohol when I drink it.

As a bodybuilder a small amount of social recreational inebriation from time to time and the social and mental health that the recreation allows for you far outweighs any minescule hinderance it may have to your "gains". IMHO

Enjoy your life!

It's always an interesting topic. I love US beers esp Miller genuine Draft
Not to play into stereotypes but I'm Australian & love a beer & on occasions that beer turns into a dozen or so, or maybe it's just the beer fairies coming at night & drinking the leftovers .
I have been following the milehighkratom threads with interest & would love to give it a go as an option for relaxing but illegal in Australia

Dark Beers are the best beers to drink if you are going to have a beer. They actually have antioxidants in them.

I'm all about a couple glasses of wine after work, haha. Moderation is always going to be the answer. Unless you're in hard-core competition prep, you'd be remiss to allow those concerns to keep you from indulging a little. And it'd be rude to force your fiancée to drink alone! ;)

"Alcohol, especially red wine, has special digestive properties that increase vascularity when consumed prior to a competition or photo shoot. Specifically, the ethanol in drinking alcohol does not require digestive breakdown to be absorbed-- it simply passes through the gastrointestinal tract into the bloodstream.

Therefore, a cup of red wine thirty minutes to an hour before showtime will result in more noticeable and pronounced vascularity in most parts of the body. Basically, blood flow to major and minor muscle groups increases, causing the physique to appear fuller and causing veins to appear more pronounced."

Then I retract that part of my statement, haha. Regardless of prep status, enjoy some wine! :alcoholic:

Alcohol just reduces the rate of protein synthesis. Myself and mates drink regularly on weekends, and often abuse it. Still not so bad on the gains though.

There does come a point where enough is enough and you realise you're not gaining as well as before, then you just take a break or drink less at parties.

This brings up a great point. I know a few individuals who just hit the Tren hard in the Spring and then get cut like crazy even though they drink hard on the weekends. Not saying you do steroids brother but I'll tell ya there are plenty that abuse alcohol in the offseason then quit for 2-3 months while on gear to get ripped for the summer party boat season.

I take 'breaks' from alcohol when I'm dieting generally - not really when bulking. But yeah I don't/can't/won't take juice for the reference..
It makes sense that people would stop drinking in their off seasons though, wouldn't wanna damage their systems too much! haha

A great benefit of taking a break while dieting, is that when you do happen to start drinking again, you've basically lost all tolerance and can be a cheap drinker LOL

I don't drink often maybe 1-2x per month. The other night I went out to the casino and had a few shots of Fireball and around 6x Gentleman Jack and Diet Cokes (went to go watch KISS live!!!!) That following Monday I was lifting heavier than the week before by a substantial amount. I think I put an extra 30lbs on compounds and an extra 10lbs on isolation.

Alcohol alone holds calories.. So where you read about tequila of all sorts not having any, I'd love to know!

I dunno maybe it has 1 calorie per shot, I don't really care overall lol it's negligible in straight liquor

edit: damn... 96 calories per ounce of tequila, I'm way off haha.. still pretty low though

In approximately 5 hours I will be tossing back a few shots of fireball and washing it down with some Whiskey and diet coke. It will definitely help get the Brazilian steak down easier.
