Curious how many members, like myself, do not have any social media accounts. Aside from my account here on AM, I do not have Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or whatever else is around.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm missing out by not having any, and other times I'm happy I do not have any social media accounts. What's everyone else's opinions on them?

I'm in the same boat as you brother.

I deleted my FB about a year ago; best decision ever. The only things I have now are AM and LinkedIn.

I made a conscious decision to not begin any of it and very rarely have I felt like I was missing out. My wife is fairly active on FB, so I get updates from her and see some pics. I always bring work home and on email until late at night, so the last thing I needed was to have something else stealing my time.

Depends on how you use social media. If you use it to promote yourself to potential employers or to dominant a certain niche to sell products that is fine.

If you use it to just post stupid things that could ruin your image or use it to bully people (I just did a project on cyber bullying and the biggest median is facebook) just stop now and get off.

The world isn't black and white, there is a gray.

I just use social media to follow certain companies, to get news and information, and certain news outlets, to get breaking news. I have friends on Facebook, but deleted anything they post from my feed. That way, I only get what I want.

I used to teach college courses for businesses on how to use social media. I also used to make my living consulting for companies and doing in house social media work. I got out of the business because the whole industry is nothing but charlatans and snake oil salesmen. I still use it for personal stuff but somedays i'd love to leave it all behind.

Obviously we use it for business, but for personal use, facebook is hardly worth visiting anymore, I like twitter for the most up to date sports news and Instagram can be entertaining when you're bored.

Facebook = good traffic for information/news sites. For promo's/companies/business, they almost filter out everything now unless you pay to reach your own fans. This is what happens when you go public and shareholders run the company. Social media has always had issues monetizing because people go there to socialize...not buy a product. Its why niche sites perform better for targeting an audience.

http://techcrunch.com/2014/04/03/the-filtered-feed-problem/

Twitter = good for b2b....not good for traffic at all. Mainly news driven and thats it.

Everything else is minor compared to facebook in terms of actual traffic.

It really depends on what you use it for. I use it to stay connected with distant friends as well as promote fitness and the lifestyle itself. I use it to motivate myself and others.

Instagram is pointless...
That's what most people think.

It's actually a gold mine if you have the right tools.

Honestly though, you're right to an extent, it is pointless for personal use but, for business, it's very helpful actually.

For personal use and business it is great. You can promote yourself with Instagram by showing off accomplishments and other things to future employers and business is obvious, more reaches

The traffic is pretty low off Instagram. Really depends on your goal. For a person it might be great, but for a site/business...its pretty low and insignificant compared to Facebook/Google organic.

People make a living off all of them. Its growing but its conversion numbers are not good. They will crack down on the monetization just like Facebook did...considering Facebook owns them. They will all be pay to play.

social media is a great law enforcement tool, thankfully criminals are stupid enough to post up incriminating posts and pics!!! i bet the cops convict more criminals by evidence gathered from cell phones and computers than by any other forensic method--including fingerprints and dna!!!

True, but really define criminal. When I see kids posting weed photos I just ignore it and move on, cause literally that is what people in my town post about every day.

lol...if you include traffic violations and every petty, arcane, and truely unenforceable stupid law on the books probably 90% of americans break a law every single day...

my favorite stupid unenforceable law is the no smoking within 8 feet of store entrances....yet it is not marked off, are they going to have a cop stand there with a tape measure?

but no i was talking about gang bangers and terrorists, serious offenses commited by people stupid enough to post about it on social media!!!

I imagine it would be really hard to do. The authorities would have to establish who the person was that posted the photo and that it wasn't staged. They can and already have, used social media as evidence after an arrest has been made... but using social media to make an arrest... seems a bit of a stretch. Unless you are talking about sting operations like "to catch a predator" type set up.

Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin etc IS NOT Social Media, they are technological platforms which support interaction between two people.

Any platform where two people can interact with each other becomes a Social Media platform be it blog, forum, Facebook, Twitter or even Gtalk for that matter.

Social Media however is "A platform where two people can interact with each other and share Knowledge, Music, Video, Thoughts, Documents & Even Time".

However it is not same as any other format of Media like Radio, Newspaper or TV as user behavior and way you communicate differs, format of traditional medium has "one way communication" but on Social Media its "Two way communication" hence people can reply back to you. So its nice to get instant replies while you engage with them but be ready to get something back if they are not happy with your brand, product or services.

what if they have a suspect, they look him up on social media and the fool has posted a pic of himself holding a weapon that looks just like the 1 used and standing next to the loot and bragging about doing the crime....i actually saw this on an episode of the 1st 48, the cops couldn't believe what an idiot this guy was!!!

Defense attorney could easily cause a reasonable doubt and he can walk.

How do you know gun was real? How do you know money was real? How do you know if he actually committed the crime or is just making **** up online like countless others do?

They would need more for a conviction, even in that extreme scenerio.

they had no evidence against him other than an anonymous tip until they saw that online....got a search warrant based on it, the gun and loot were all found in his possesion...he plead out, lol!!!

Guess I'm wrong then, because ya know, reality shows are pretty much always entirely accurate and they never edit anything out or with hold events in order to make a better show.

There was a day when as a kid you could do or say something that would embarrass your parents and it was limited to the school or the neighborhood or the family.

Now your kids can embarrass you for the entire world to see. Thanks Obama! ;)

Sorry grandpa Dunn

I remember as a kid, when I would get detention my grandmom would have to pick me up and she used to be so piss ed at me. Not because of what I did but because, and I quote "what would the neighbors say" She would be upset because she felt it reflected on her.

We should be thanking Al Gore for inventing the internet and turning porn into a trillion dollar industry. That there is a recession proof product :(

Piracy proof too.

With all the free porn available online, I've always wondered how they manage to stay so profitable

Social media is a great tool for business but you have to separate your personal life from you business life. And please for the love of iron be conscious of what you post. Not every has the same view points and your future employers will see this stuff.

Interesting to see everyone's views and opinions on the matter.

I can see how social media can be quite helpful for a company if used in the right way.

As far as personal use, it seems to go both ways.

I have heard from friends about drama that has been started on Facebook and back and forth fighting between people. On the other hand I have heard about people who have met their now wives or husbands on social media.

I suppose at the end of the day, it's simply what you make out of it that determines your views on it.

AM is the most social media that I will do. I can't bring myself to deal with Facebook or IG. I had a friend who was so obsessed with Facebook that it would be the only thing she'd talk about. ??

Pretty much the exact same thing as me. I like the feeling of being unplugged from everything. No one knows my business and I do not know theirs. If someone wants to get a hold of me or find out how things are going with me, they have to pick up a phone and call or text.
