    National Guard...ASVAB score question

Any military guys know what MOS an 80 on the ASVAB qualifies me for in Army National Guard?

Have a bachelors degree and banged out an 80 so curious what options that gives me. Recruiter has been a bit tough to meet up with lately with work this week.

    Any help appreciated.

The recruiter should have told you what MOSs you qualified for, immediately after the test results came out. Believe me, he or she wants to get that list into your hands ASAP, they are not avoiding you.

80 is pretty good, I was an 89 back when I joined the service and had every job open to me except nuke because I have a GED not a diploma. I think if you have 80 or above high scores like that usually have their pick as long as there's a demand. Pick something you think you can handle with a nice signing bonus but don't bite off more then you can chew. Not sure about national guard but my A school and weapons training was 2 years and if you flunk out you were sent to the fleet without a mos and had to wait to strike for another rate.

Appreciate the response, current opening near me seem like military police and infantrymen positions, which kind of work since I'd like to be a civilian police officer.

Yea he just gave me my score, hasn't told me what I qualify for but openings I'd be interested around me are military police and infantrymen being that id like a civilian career in law enforcement.

Idk about NG but I do know that you will learn literally nothing as an infantryman.

I pick up trash and mow lawns more than anything else just FYI.

    <----- scored a 98.

Also, the army puts more stock into the GT than the actually ASVAB score.

Likewise, in the marine corp, as infantry, we are sanitation specialists, janitors, barracks beautification experts.
We clean, sleep, clean, sleep, clean, sleep, clean, train, clean, sleep, clean, sleep, clean, sleep, clean, train, clean. You can throw in random classes in that schedule that do NO one any good because it would be our 3rd or 4th time minimum attending this class. Bull**** topics like SAPR, SA, Deadly Keystrokes, etc...

I am active duty right now and ^^^ is correct, an 80 is a pretty legit score. its all about your GT score though. The test is brokem down into different areas. The GT score is the portion that is uesd to see what MOS's you would qualify for. Generally, a 110 GT score and you can do anything. Dont be alarmed by the "110". Just cuz you got an 80 overall doesnt mean you didnt get a 110 on the GT portion.

OP I would recommend you to try 31B which is military police and then switch it up to 31D(CID) which is what I do and love it especially if you want to be a cop in the cities

    That's how I feel.

I enlisted to go to war and got sent to the parade brigade out here in Bragg.

Nobody lower than E-6 has a CIB, although from all the people I've talked to that came back from Afghanistan I am probably better off here lol. Still gay though.

They're right, the GT score will define what you qualify for in the Army. Also being that you have a degree you qualify for OCS (officer Candidate School), make sure to talk to them about that.

When you go to processing they'll tell you what is available at that cycle time. Jobs open at the beginning of a cycle and then close as they fill the slots. Works a bit different with the Guard and they should know whats open before you go from talking w/ your local units.

That's good to hear. Read some horror stories as I stayed earlier bout MP guys not doing much LE type stuff and then having trouble getting on LE jobs after being MP cause of tactics and such, some guys mentioned being more janitors than cops for te military. Good to hear some positive feedback, it's much appreciated. Will look into that for sure, thanks again man!

    Asvap has different categories...

Most MOS require a certain GT or ST score for entry. Look into what your actual scores were(should be 10-15 different scores from electronics to general mechanics to nuclear etc. ), not your percent.

usually over 110 on GT gets you must jobs...

I'm 11B, have BS, E7 in under 10 years and in the Guard. I am also civilian police officer. There is huge misconception on being MP will help you become Cop more then the next job. A cook has same chance on becoming cop as MP. Combat Arms in my opinion will set you up for success more them most other jobs. Go 11B and you will more then likely surround yourself with other like minded individuals.

I agree. Go OCS. Don't go in as an enlisted if you can pass OCS. Respect, money etc. if you can pass OCS.

I got a 90 on my ASVAB and am a 6 year veteran of the Oregon National Guard Infantry. First off, I'm assuming the recruiter that you are talking to is at a unit or armory. If this is correct the main reason that he isn't really forthcoming with anything about your MOS qual or OCS is because his ultimate goal is to get you as an enlisted member of his unit. So the type of unit that he works in is the MOS he has planned for you. In addition to that the National Guard Infantry is a lot different than AD until you deploy. In the National Guard you have 1 Weekend per month and 2 weeks per year to train. We did not waste our time like is being complained about in this thread. We show up friday, get our gear ready, do PCI and hit the field to train, come back, clean up, and leave till next month. There was a guy that mowed the lawn for us at our armory, a civillian. In addition to that, my infantry battalion was chock full of guys who were police in there civilian life. I think if your ultimate goal is to be a police officer, either MOS would be fine, although MP would probably be optimum for obvious reasons. Also my unit lost 4 good men in Iraq, I would never say that any of them were "wasting" their time in the Infantry, nor do I think their families consider their service a waste. It is honestly a bit disappointing to see Infantryman with that kind of attitude. Just my 2 cents fwiw.

My two cents, would be look into everything before you commit to just the Army National Guard. There is a lot of options out there just don't be narrow sighted cause what one might not offer you another might. Recruiters are ultimately trying to hit their numbers remember that. I'm Air Force National Guard and I love it, been to a lot of places and done lots of things most people will never get to do. Also remember when you enlist and make it you are 1 percent of America so it's something to be proud of.

Also remember when you enlist and make it you are 1 percent of America so it's something to be proud of.
Actually looked into Air Guard myself. The real deciding factor was the student loan repayment plan that the Army National Guard offers, none of the other branches reserve duties would offer that for me and I'm up to my eyeballs in college debt so that was the kicker for me.

Thank you for the input and thanks for your service, sorry about your brothers in Iraq. Appreciate your feedback my friend, love getting all these different points of view. Leaning towards that MP position and still pushing for that OCS opportunity. We'll see how it goes with the recruiter this week.

If you looking for student loan repayment, I see where the issue might be. In Virginia, MP would not get SLRP and OCS would be the same. Student Loan Repayment is used to recruit people into hard to fill units. MP is very popular and easy to fill in densely populated areas. The Guard gets a lot if Officers from ROTC nation wide so here usually is no shortage of junior officers and no need to offer SLRP for OCS option. Enlist into the job that offers SLRP, serve the 6-12 months that is required and then go to OCS. That's your best bet.
