What BF% should you be before bulking?

I was wondering how low your bf% should be before you begin putting on size ?

Last year I started bulking up at 14% bf.

Is that low enough ?

I just wanted to know how low I needed to get to.

Its all up to you. There's no set percentage...it's all about your goals.

If you've been in a deficit for awhile, and you feel your going stale, then slowly start surplussing your macro's.

As lonewolf0420 said, that's really up to you. IMO, the optimal body compositions for adding mass are ~8-10% bodyfat for males and ~12-15% for females, but that's just me and from what I have observed. In the end, it's about where you feel comfortable, and what you're prepared to go up to, since if you do a "traditional" bulk, then bodyfat gain will come along with the lean mass.

I'm working on cutting down right now. I've been dieting for about a week. I'm about 240, and I would like to get to about 10% bf before starting to gain weight.

I don't know my current bf%....I'm kinda scared to find out. Haha

All up to the individual. I like to bulk when I'm around 8% to 10% and bulk to around 13%or 14%.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think I will try to make it down to 10% then start bulking.

I'm not dieting down and bulking for anything really. Its just for me.

But, there is a powerlifting competition in Houston, Tx that is in March. I would like to try it out. That would be my first one.

But I don't know how strong I'll be while dieting down.

Any thoughts on that ?

Here is my diet right now.

7:00 A.M. 7 egg whites. 1 1/4 cups has browns with olive oil

10:00 A.M. Enjoy life raw food bar.

Post workout: 24 grams whey, 1 banana

1:00 P.M. 2 pieces rice bread with bores head deli meat, or meat patti, with veganase mayo and pickles.

4:00 P.M. maybe rice and beans, or rice cereal with rice protein mix together with rice milk.

7:00 P.M. first size of lean meat, turkey or ground beef, with veggies

9:00 P.M. small container of soy yogurt.

I'm 5'10 @ 158lbs with 12% BF and trying to get to 175lbs with the same BF %. So far, I feel pretty good during my workouts with slight adjustments to my diet.

What does pound for pound mean ? Sorry, I'm new to the powerlifting terminology.

Here is the info that is on the website:

May 21, 2011
WABDL Southern Regional Bench Press/Deadlift Championships - Houston, Tx

There is a phone number provided, I think I need to call and find out more information.

I'm not sure if they even use pound for pound in powerlifting comps. I don't follow the scene much. But it's weight lifted:body weight. For example, 100 pound bench press:50 pound person = 2:1

Ohh ok...I am gonna call today or tomorrow and find out more info.

I'm hoping to lose some body fat and not lose too much strength.

This is the second week of my diet. I actually feel stronger, Idk how long that will last though.

I try to start once I get down to 7% and stay at that for a while. Cut out the cardio add a few thousand cal's and the strength and muscle just packs right on.
