Whey is one of the basics that you can use pretty much all the time. I just use it as a base and add stuff like peanut butter and oats to get the calories I want out of it. You can and should take whey all the time if you're lifting consistently. The extra calories can be added to it easier and cheaper than buying a special weight gainer.
Stick with whey and make it your own weight gainer shake peanut butter, oats, even extra peanuts and whateva else you wanna throw in with it, but if you dont wanna use that then get the weight gainer with little sugar in it dude
